The Grand Ballroom of the Imperial Palace had been transformed into a breathtaking winter wonderland.

Crystal chandeliers cast pale light across marble floors polished to a mirror-like shine. Silver decorations hung from the walls, reflecting the golden glow of hundreds of candles. Nobles moved gracefully across the ballroom in glittering gowns and elegant suits, their faces hidden behind elaborate masks.

Laughter mingled with the music of the orchestra, creating an atmosphere of luxury and celebration.

At the center of it all stood Princess Alice.

She was beside the Emperor, dressed in a gown of pure white velvet trimmed with delicate silver fur. A lace mask framed her angelic features, making her look every bit like the innocent princess the entire empire adored.

But hidden beneath that innocence was something far more dangerous.

Pinned over her heart was a beautiful silver brooch.

Inside it rested a faintly glowing pink crystal.

The Heart-Lure Crystal.

A forbidden mind-control artifact acquired from renegade priests of the Holy Temple.

As Alice smiled sweetly at the Emperor, the crystal released invisible waves of magic into the air. The scent was almost pleasant—sweet, like blooming roses.

"Your Majesty," Alice said softly, her voice overflowing with carefully crafted affection. "Prince Cedric has truly regretted his mistakes. Wouldn't it be merciful to restore his royal command before the new year?"

The Emperor's eyes slowly became unfocused.

For a moment, the sharp ruler of the empire seemed to disappear beneath a veil of mist.

"Yes..." he murmured. "Perhaps Cedric was simply misled. He deserves another chance."

A familiar mechanical voice suddenly rang inside Evelina's mind.

[SYSTEM ALERT!]

[Forbidden Charm Active: "Heart-Lure Crystal"]

[Target Affected: Emperor Aethelgard III]

[Danger: High Risk of Political Realignment]

Evelina's lips curled slightly.

So, this was Alice's move.

Before she could say anything, the heavy double doors of the ballroom suddenly swung open.

The orchestra faltered.

Conversations died one after another until the entire ballroom fell into an uneasy silence.

Every head turned toward the entrance.

Two figures stood beneath the grand doorway.

Duke Lucien Valemont.

And Lady Evelina Rosenthal.

Evelina immediately became the center of attention.

While most of the women in the ballroom were dressed in pastel colors, pearls, and shimmering silver, Evelina wore something completely different.

Her gown was obsidian black and deep emerald green, its structured design emphasizing her elegant figure.

Silver embroidery covered the fabric like the scales of a serpent.

A dark silver mask concealed the upper half of her face.

But it did nothing to hide her sharp amber eyes.

Nor the cold, beautiful smile resting upon her lips.

Beside her, Lucien looked equally intimidating.

His black military coat matched Evelina's dress perfectly. His tall, imposing figure and naturally cold presence were enough to make nearby nobles instinctively step aside.

On Evelina's finger, the obsidian ring Lucien had given her pulsed faintly with dark magic.

The moment she stepped into the ballroom, the ring activated.

The sweet fumes released by Alice's crystal vanished before they could reach her.

"Look at her..." a noblewoman whispered from behind her fan. "She actually dared to wear black to the Imperial Gala."

"She looks like an Empress of the Underworld," a Marquis muttered, unable to hide his fascination.

Evelina ignored them.

She simply took two glasses of champagne from a passing servant and handed one to Lucien.

"The room smells like cheap perfume and desperation," she murmured.

Lucien took a slow sip.

"That would be the charm crystal."

Evelina glanced at him.

"It's affecting everyone within ten paces of Alice," he continued calmly. "The Emperor's mind is already slipping."

Evelina's smile widened.

"Not for long."

[QUEST INITIATED: Shatter the Facade]

[Target: Princess Alice]

[Objective: Expose the "Heart-Lure Crystal" publicly.]

[Reward: Absolute Control of the Imperial Social Circle + Magic Stat Boost]

Evelina set down her glass.

Then she began walking toward the imperial dais.

One step.

Then another.

The entire ballroom watched her.

Whispers followed her like shadows.

Alice's smile slowly disappeared.

Something was wrong.

Evelina should have been affected.

She should have been confused, emotional, or at the very least, enchanted by the crystal's influence.

But there was nothing.

Not even the slightest hesitation in Evelina's eyes.

Why isn't she affected?

Panic flashed through Alice's mind.

Her fingers unconsciously touched the brooch over her heart.

The High Priest said no mortal could resist the Heart-Lure Crystal!

Evelina stopped before the Emperor and bowed.

"Your Imperial Majesty," she said with flawless grace. "What a joyous Winter Gala."

The Emperor blinked.

The moment Evelina stepped within the protective range of Lucien's magic, the crystal's influence over him weakened.

The fog in his eyes began to disappear.

He rubbed his temples, looking confused.

"Ah... Lady Evelina."

His gaze shifted toward Alice.

"What... what were we just discussing?"

Alice's face tightened.

"N-Nothing, Your Majesty. We were only discussing Prince Cedric's... redemption."

"How touching."

Evelina's voice carried through the suddenly silent ballroom.

She smiled.

"Princess Alice is so devoted to the Crown Prince's redemption that she is willing to use an illegal divine relic to persuade His Majesty."

Gasps erupted throughout the ballroom.

Alice's face drained of color.

"W-What nonsense are you saying, Sister Evelina?"

She took a step backward.

"How could you accuse me of something so vile?"

"Am I accusing you?"

Evelina tilted her head innocently.

"Then perhaps you can explain why that lovely little brooch on your chest is emitting illegal charm-type mana."

Alice froze.

"It's a family heirloom!"

Her voice rose in panic.

"Your Majesty, she's lying! She's only trying to ruin me because she hates me!"

Evelina chuckled softly.

"Then surely you won't object to having it examined."

She took another step closer.

"After all, if it's merely a family heirloom, what could possibly be inside it?"

Alice's eyes widened.

Before she could answer, a deep voice echoed across the ballroom.

"If it's an heirloom, Princess Alice..."

Lucien stepped forward.

His ice-blue eyes were cold enough to silence the entire room.

"...then you won't mind if I use Northern Mana-Detection Light on it."

Alice's expression collapsed.

"W-Wait—!"

Lucien snapped his fingers.

A beam of icy-blue light shot from his palm.

It struck the brooch directly.

CRACK!

The silver casing shattered.

The pink crystal inside fractured instantly.

Dark fumes exploded into the air, swirling with sickly red light.

The magic was unmistakable.

Forbidden.

Poisonous.

Mind-control magic.

The ballroom erupted into chaos.

Nobles screamed and stumbled backward.

"Mind Control Magic?!"

The Grand Master of the Magic Tower stared at the shattered crystal in horror.

"That's a forbidden artifact from the Dark Cult!"

The Emperor shot to his feet.

His face had turned crimson with rage.

"ALICE!"

Alice trembled.

"No!"

She dropped to her knees.

"No, Your Majesty! It isn't mine! Someone must have planted it on me!"

Tears streamed down her face.

"I swear I didn't know!"

Her eyes darted desperately around the room.

Then, in a desperate attempt to save herself, she threw the blame onto the person closest to her.

"Cedric!"

Everyone went silent.

"Cedric gave it to me!" Alice sobbed. "It was Cedric!"

She didn't hesitate.

Not even for a second.

She sacrificed her own lover to protect herself.

Evelina watched silently.

Then the System appeared.

[QUEST COMPLETED!]

[Alice's Facade Shattered!]

[Reward Granted: +300 System Gold]

[Mana Control +50]

[Imperial Favorability Shifted.]

[Princess Alice's Reputation: DESTROYED]

Evelina looked down at the woman kneeling before her.

The once-beloved princess was now trembling, crying, and desperately trying to cling to whatever remained of her reputation.

Evelina leaned closer.

Her amber eyes gleamed beneath the dark silver mask.

"You tried to play with magic you didn't understand, Alice."

Her voice was soft.

Almost gentle.

But every word carried the chill of winter.

"In this story, you are not the tragic victim."

A faint smile appeared on her lips.

"You're just a pathetic amateur."

The imperial guards rushed forward.

Alice screamed and struggled as they seized her arms and dragged her away for questioning.

The ballroom remained frozen in silence.

Every noble stared at Evelina.

Some with admiration.

Others with fear.

She hadn't raised a sword.

She hadn't spilled a single drop of blood.

Yet she had destroyed the beloved princess in front of the entire imperial court.

She didn't need a crown to command the room.

Then a strong arm wrapped around her waist.

Lucien pulled her closer.

His presence was cold and possessive, yet strangely reassuring.

"Magnificent," he murmured near her ear.

His breath brushed against her skin, sending a faint shiver down her spine.

"You destroyed her without getting a single drop of blood on your hands."

Evelina looked up at him.

Their eyes met.

Ice-blue against amber.

Her sharp smile returned.

"I told you, Duke."

She raised her champagne glass and took a leisurely sip.

"I don't play to survive."

Her gaze swept across the terrified nobles surrounding them.

"I play to win."

Late that night, the Rosenthal estate had fallen into complete silence. The servants had already retired to their quarters, and the halls that were usually filled with footsteps and whispers were now illuminated only by the faint glow of moonlight. Inside her private study, Evelina sat behind a massive oak desk covered with maps, financial records, military reports, and documents concerning the noble families of the empire. Unlike the other ladies of her age, Evelina had no interest in jewelry, dances, or romantic gossip.
