Chapter 4

Author: Year on Year
I was surprised for a moment. Then, I let out a laugh.

I looked at him and said, “You’re the one who seems to have found someone else. Am I correct, Jackson?”

Jackson’s face darkened. “What nonsense are you spouting?”

“I’m not spouting nonsense. Since we’re both here, let’s go to City Hall and get divorced.”

Jackson’s face only got darker. “Are you nuts, Cerise? Are you really going to do all this because of such a small thing that happened that day?”

“‘A small thing’?” I said.

“I’ve been delivering lunch to you for ten years, Jackson, but you said I was your cousin. Do you know what I was thinking in the rain on the way home? I was wondering what the past ten years were for.”

“It was something I said in the moment.”

“I was in the rain at that moment. Ten years, Jackson! I cooked for you for ten years, but you can’t even acknowledge me as your wife.”

Jackson did not say anything.

“Let’s get a divorce. Let’s just let this go.”

“I won’t get a divorce.” Jackson turned away.

“When I married you, Cerise, I spent every cent I had on your wedding gift and the house renovations. That all took money, you know. How can you ask for a divorce just like that?”

I looked at him, suddenly feeling like he was a stranger.

Was this really the man I had been living with for ten years?

“Sure. Then, if we can’t have a divorce, we should at least go our separate ways. I won’t come home, and you won’t come looking for me. We won’t bother each other.”

“Cerise!”

I ignored him and walked away.

After taking a few steps, I turned to look back. Jackson was still standing in place, looking in my direction. But he did not chase after me.

The next day, I wanted to go to Jackson’s house to get some things.

I needed to get the kids’ winter clothes and some documents. I had left them behind when I left in a rush that night.

Knowing that Jackson would not be home as he was working during the day, I chose to go over at about 2 p.m.

My key still worked. As I twisted the doorknob, my hand shook just a bit.

There was a half-eaten frozen meal on the dining table, and the trash can was filled with takeout boxes.

It had only been a few days, but Jackson was eating only takeout.

I went upstairs to pack some things in the bedroom.

Lila and Lionel’s clothes were in the bottom drawer. I sat down and took the clothing out one by one.

I heard an engine out the window.

Jackson’s car had stopped outside.

He sat in the driver’s seat, and there was someone in the front passenger seat. It was a woman. I could not see her face clearly, but I could tell that she was young. She had long hair and wore a red coat.

Jackson and the woman leaned very close together.

The woman reached out to touch his face.

I was flabbergasted and clenched my phone tightly.

It was a shocking revelation for me. Jackson really had a mistress.

My next impulse was to take some photos.

I clicked on my camera app, zoomed in, and took several photos.

One had them close together and talking. Another one showed her touching his face. In another picture, Jackson turned to her and laughed.

After taking the photos, I put my phone away and kept packing.

When I left, Jackson’s car was still parked in the same place.

I went over and knocked on the car window.

I turned around and pulled Lila and Lionel outside. Outside the restaurant, the evening breeze was a little cold. Mom and Dad followed behind me without saying anything. When we got to the car, Dad suddenly called my name. I turned around. He looked at me with red eyes. “I support you fully,” he said. Mom came over and took my hand. She did not say anything and patted my hand gently. That night, after getting home, I sat by the window for a long time. My phone buzzed several times with texts from Jackson. I did not look at them. The moon shone brightly outside the window, shining down on many homes. I recalled how I had left my hometown and come to this unfamiliar city alone ten years ago. Back then, I had been filled with hope, believing that love, happiness, and a happy home were waiting for me in my marriage.Ten years had passed since then. I had two children and was divorced. All I wanted was to start over.I had no regrets. That was because I finally under

“Enough!” Jackson roared. Everyone was stunned. He looked at Rose and then at Claire. His face was red. His voice trembled as he said, “That’s enough from all of you! Just stop talking!”“How dare you, Jackson?” Claire’s eyes widened in disbelief. Jackson said hoarsely, “Mom, it’s Lionel’s birthday today. You can join in if you want, but don’t throw a tantrum here. You won’t like what I’ll do if you keep this up.”Claire was taken aback. “You’ll really kick me out for them?”“No. I won’t kick you out. I’m begging you to please stop causing a fuss. It was my fault, not Cerise’s. Her parents aren’t wrong either. Don’t make trouble for them.”Claire’s face turned pale. Rose opened her mouth but could not say anything. Looking at Jackson, I suddenly felt like I was in a daze. This was the first time I had ever seen him act this way in ten years. In the past, he would hide or try to smooth things over whenever Claire and I got into an argument. He had never taken my side.

I looked into Jackson’s eyes silently. Mom stood up. “Enough! Let’s stop talking about this. The past is done. What is the point of all that now anyway?”Dad had more to say, but Mom stopped him. Jackson stood there helplessly. Looking at him, I suddenly felt like I was looking at a stranger. I had been with this man for a decade. I used to think that I understood him, but the truth was that I did not know him at all.Right then, the door to the private room burst open. “Jackson Holloway!” cried a sharp voice. I turned to find Claire there, with Rose right behind her. They stormed in. When they spotted us, their expressions darkened. Claire pointed at us. “Good! I knew you’d be here!”Jackson’s face turned pale, and he hurried to intercept Claire. “What are you doing here, Mom?”“Why can’t I be here?” Claire shoved him away. “My grandson is celebrating his birthday. Why can’t I be here?”Claire came up to me and gave me a once-over. She scoffed and said, “Well do

Jackson was silent for a long time. Then, he said, “I want to apologize to them. I treated you badly and owe you and them an apology.”I did not respond. “I know you might not believe me, but I want to put every effort into being a better person. I’m not planning anything. “It’s for the kids. I don’t want them to wonder why they couldn’t celebrate their birthdays together with their grandparents.”I hung up and thought about it for a long time. That evening, I went to my parents’ apartment for dinner and told them about our conversation.Dad’s expression was stormy. “I’m not going. I get mad just looking at him.”Mom tried to calm him down. “Let Cerise finish, David.”I looked at him. “Dad, if you really don’t want to join, I’ll tell him.”Dad did not reply. “What do you think, Cerise?” Mom asked. I told her I did not know either. After a long silence, Dad finally said, “Alright, I’ll join. I want to see what kind of apology he can come up with.”That Saturday evenin

After the meal, Jackson left, and I stood in the kitchen alone for a long time. The faucet ran, and water gushed in the sink. I stared at the bowl in my hand without moving. When he had said those words, his voice had been low, as though he had forced them out.“Your cooking still tastes the same.”I did not know how I felt. I had been with him for ten years, but this was the first time I felt he was truly remorseful. But what would that do? It would change nothing in our relationship. That night, I called Mom and told her about Jackson joining us for dinner. Mom was silent for a while before asking, “What are you thinking, Cerise?”I told her I did not know. “Then, take your time thinking about it. Don’t rush. Once we get back, we can discuss this together.”I agreed and hung up. I sat by the window and watched the moon outside. It was a full moon that night. Before the divorce, I always cooked up a storm and waited for him to come home for dinner. Jackson rarely

I left. After walking some distance away, I looked back. Jackson was still standing there looking at me. He was frozen in place. That night, I called Mom. “Mom.”“What is it, Cerise?”“Nothing. I just miss you.”Mom laughed. “Silly girl, we’ll be back once we’re done here.”“Okay,” I said. “Where’s Dad, Mom?”“Watching TV. David, Cerise wants to talk to you.”Dad came to the phone. “How are things, Cerise?”“Everything’s fine, Dad. I just wanted to ask you how selling the house is going.”“We’ll be done soon. Someone’s interested, and we’re talking things out.”“Dad…” I paused before continuing, “Thank you.”Dad was silent on the other end of the line.“Silly girl, you don’t need to thank me. I’m your father,” he said. After hanging up, I sat by the window and looked at the lights outside. This city was very active at night, and the lights flickered as cars veered past.I had lived here for eleven years, but this was the first time I felt like it was not so foreign
