Chapter 2

Author: Footsteps Forest
When Sasha saw me backing down and reaching for my wallet, she immediately smirked.

She took the credit card I handed her and swiped it through the card reader at lightning speed for her ten thousand dollars.

However, instead of printing a receipt, she pulled a receipt book out of the drawer. She scribbled a few words on it and stamped it with a red seal.

Then, she tore it off and flung it in front of me. “The receipt printer is broken. This is all I’ve got. Take it or leave it!”

I picked up the handwritten receipt and glanced at it. My expression instantly turned cold.

The receipt did not bear our hotel’s official financial stamp at all. Instead, it was stamped with a seal from a company called “Feast Catering Outsourcing Services Limited.”

As the hotel’s owner, it all clicked in an instant.

This hotel garnered a massive daily foot traffic. By forcing guests to spend ten thousand dollars in this manner and routing the money through this outsourcing company, they could generate a significant amount of revenue over the course of a year.

This was no longer a simple violation. It was an extremely serious case of embezzlement and money laundering!

I carefully folded the receipt and tucked it into my inner pocket.

“Show me the way. Let’s go eat your ten-thousand-dollar luxury meal.”

Ten minutes later, the food was served.

At the sight of the dishes on the table, my mom shook her head in disgust.

Several of them were clearly pre-packaged meals, and the fruit juice was obviously made from syrup.

My mom picked up her cutlery and poked at one of the seafood dishes. Then, she commented, “The veins in these shrimps are black, and the meat is mushy. These shrimps have clearly been frozen and thawed repeatedly.

“This braised pork isn’t fresh either.

“You’re charging ten thousand dollars for garbage food that’s worse than what you’d find at a roadside truck!”

My mom’s voice grew louder and louder. It drew the attention of people at several nearby tables.

Sasha was afraid that this would instigate a public outcry. So, she immediately brought the security guards over. After that, she forcibly ushered me and my mom to the most secluded corner of the restaurant.

When I saw how furious she was, I deliberately taunted her. “This meal is terrible. You can’t even pretend to make it look presentable.

“I bet your brother’s just some low-level thug who’s living under a rock, right?”

“What nonsense!”

She was so agitated by my words that she got carried away and started bragging, “My brother is in charge of all procurement for dozens of hotels across the whole of Waterside Spry!

“He just paid cash for a river-view villa at Riverbend. Yesterday, he even picked up a top-of-the-line Porsche!

“Poor schmucks like you could work your whole lives and still can’t afford even a single wheel of his car!”

In charge of all procurement in Waterside Spry?

Mr. Clark was the director of procurement, but he had always been honest and humble. Also, he was about to retire. There was no way he would do something like this.

If it was not Mr. Clark, who else could be meddling in the procurement of this five-star hotel and turning a blind eye to staff lining their pockets so brazenly?

Who on earth was it?

Sasha broke down and lunged at Howard. She was scratching and biting him.“You tricked me into sleeping with you. You tricked me into helping you cook the books. You bum!”“Get away from me, you witch!”Howard could not care less about his mistress at this moment. He kicked Sasha away and scrambled on all fours to Joanne’s feet.“Joanne, I was wrong! I really didn’t know she was Ms. Shelton!“It’s all because of that witch. She seduced me and made me do it!“Please forgive me this once. I’ll never do it again!”While watching the two of them tear into each other, I let out a cold laugh and turned to Mrs. Smith. She was slinking against the wall and trying to slip away unnoticed.“Stop her,” I said indifferently. Two bodyguards immediately stepped forward.Joanne shot the woman a glance and scoffed coldly.“I was wondering who it was. You’re carrying a knockoff Hermes bag while wearing a counterfeit Chanel outfit. Are you here to pretend to be a rich socialite?”“Does your w

Howard froze for a moment when he heard me call him by his full name.“You still dare to threaten me? Get her! Rip that thing out of her hands!” Howard shouted defiantly from the side. “That’s right. Scratch their faces. Let’s see if they dare to act so cocky after that!”Just as the security guard was about to grab me by the shoulder, a deafening crash rang out at the entrance to the lobby. The lock on the door, which the security guards had just bolted shut, was violently smashed open from the outside with a riot-control steel spike.Immediately after, the door was kicked open. The security guards instinctively froze before they turned their heads in unison toward the entrance. At the lobby entrance, a woman walked in in four-inch red bottoms. She was accompanied by four bodyguards dressed in black. When I recognized who it was, my tense nerves finally relaxed. Then, I casually tossed the crystal ashtray back onto the coffee table. The moment Howard saw Joanne’s face, he fr

As soon as those words left my mouth, a fine layer of cold sweat instantly broke out on Howard’s forehead. After all, he was just a freeloader who had climbed the social ladder on the backs of women. He had never seen how the world worked before. He only dared to act this way because he thought the boss was too far removed from day-to-day operations to pay attention to such minor details. He stared at me with a look of shock and suspicion as his heart pounded wildly. ‘Could this woman be an undercover investigator sent by the group’s headquarters?!’ he thought.“W-Who are you exactly?”Howard’s voice was already trembling uncontrollably.“Howard, why are you so scared of her?”Seeing Howard’s confidence waver, Sasha immediately rolled her eyes dramatically and stirred the pot from the sidelines.“She’s just a cheapskate nobody who knows next to nothing and is deliberately putting on a show here!“She was dragging her feet just to pay that ten-thousand-dollar bill earlier. Ho

I waved the phone in my hand.“My phone ran out of battery and shut down. Can I borrow a power bank from your front desk to turn it back on? That’s not too much to ask, is it?“Otherwise, how else am I supposed to transfer the two million to you?”Howard and Sasha exchanged a glance.“Alright. Give her a power bank!”Sasha let out a cold laugh and gave the security guard a nod.“Keep a close eye on the main gate. Don’t let even a fly out until the money clears!”The receptionist reluctantly handed me a power bank.I took it and plugged it into my phone. As soon as the screen lit up, I immediately opened WhatsApp and tapped on my chat with Joanne.I shifted slightly to the side to avoid the gaze of Howard and the others. Then, I quickly raised my phone.I snapped a photo of him and Sasha, who were locked in each other’s arms.[Joanne, take a look at this well-behaved little puppy of yours. Not only is he using the money you gave him to support his mistress and pretend to be a

This “big boss,” whom Sasha kept calling “her brother” and who claimed to oversee all procurement for Waterside Spry, was not even an executive at our group. His name was Howard Schubert, the boyfriend of my best friend, Joanne Carrey, for the past six months.Howard had even toasted to me at Joanne’s birthday party three months ago.At the time, Joanne was head over heels in love. She was smiling sweetly with eyes full of adoration for this pretty boy who provided her with emotional support.I had always been protective of my friends. Since he was my best friend’s sweetheart, I naturally wanted to be gracious on her behalf. So, right then and there, I gave Howard a general-purpose card for one of our group’s hotels. It was a welcome gift to someone younger than me.On top of that, Joanne privately begged me to arrange a respectable job for him.She said that he resented being called a freeloader who relied on his woman at the trading company. It hurt his pride. With no other c

Hearing this, the wealthy woman who had lost her necklace immediately teared up as she turned to me and my mom.“Give me back my necklace, you thieves!” she shouted with visible agitation.“Ma’am, please calm down. We’ve never even seen your necklace.”I shielded my mother behind me and glared at Sasha.“There are security cameras all over the lobby. Just pull up the footage, and everything will be crystal clear!”However, Sasha wore a sly, cold smile and said with complete confidence, “What a coincidence. The camera near the couch in the lobby just happened to break down yesterday.“But we don’t even need the footage. Who else in the lobby would steal something besides you two bums dressed in cheap knockoffs?”“Security, search their bodies and their bags!”Ignoring my objections, she forced the security guards, who had been hesitating just moments before, to step forward.Faced with a theft case involving two million dollars, the security guards seemed to regain their confid
