Chapter 3

Autor: Ollie Orange
I would forgive everything as long as my family and I stayed together.

Mom, however, suddenly looked hesitant as she sighed. "Actually, Hunter, we're here to talk to you about something. Because of your report to the higher-ups, Lorraine was punished in the unit.

"She says she doesn't blame you and knows you're fighting for the transfer back to the city when she already has a slot."

Dad quickly nodded. "If you agree to attend the adoption ceremony for Rowan as part of our family, she'll give you the slot."

Any affection I thought I had felt from them vanished in that moment.

This was it. It was all for Rowan again. Mom and Dad only came to me because they feared his reputation might not rise as an orphan. They wanted to be his backing.

I closed my eyes, letting the tears slide down my cheeks. Finally, I exhaled, defeated.

"Fine. I'll be there."

The adoption ceremony Mom and Dad threw for Rowan was extravagant, to say the least. Everyone in the base housing had shown up.

Rowan and Lorraine walked in hand in hand, like a perfectly matched couple. I stood off to the side, holding a plate of tidbits, watching Rowan bow deeply to my parents.

They laughed and chatted with him as they helped him up, presenting a symbolic gift to mark the start of their new relationship.

How ridiculous. It had been forever since I saw such heartfelt smiles from them.

Rowan then walked over to me, opening his arms with an almost teasing warmth. "Hunter, from now on, I'm your older brother. Now, aren't you going to hug your big bro?"

His gentle expression hid a subtle provocation. My whole body went rigid. I gripped the plate so hard my knuckles whitened, and I was speechless.

One teased, "Hey, Rowan. Is Hunter now your brother-in-law or younger brother?"

The other joked, "And are you guys actually sharing a wife?"

Lorraine's face darkened instantly. "Zip it!"

She turned to me. "Hunter, he's your brother now. You might not be used to it yet, but at least save him the embarrassment. Come on, acknowledge him, or they won't stop poking fun at him."

Mom and Dad looked earnest, pressing me to acknowledge Rowan as my brother.

Of course, they had thought of everything for Rowan. If I recognized him as my brother, the one getting mocked would be me.

Faced with my hesitation, Rowan tried to smooth things over. "Alright, everyone, let's not push Hunter. I was an orphan, but now, I have Mom, Dad, and Lorraine. Honestly, what more could I ask for?"

He inched closer and spoke in a lowered voice. "Your parents and wife are now all mine. Did you really think you ended up in the hospital two years ago because of an accident?

"Let me be honest, as your older brother. It was Lorraine who had someone tamper with your medication because she didn't want the higher-ups to choose you over me for the position.

"Ever wondered why last year's promotion slot changed? Well, she destroyed all your chances."

A loud crash pierced the air. My hands had shaken so badly that I couldn't hold the plate, and it had slipped from my grip.

No wonder the doctor had looked at me so strangely back then. It turned out Lorraine had been manipulating my guilt to keep me from interfering with their lives, all so she could be with Rowan!

I couldn't take it anymore. I shoved Rowan to the ground, ready to strike him across the face. Before I could do that, though, Lorraine did it to me first.

"Are you a lunatic or what?" she screamed. "Rowan has been minding his own business, walking on eggshells around you. Seriously, what the hell has he done to you?"

She sneered. "No wonder your parents hated you so much that they had to look for someone else to be their son. A person like you doesn't deserve love."

Mom and Dad stayed close to Rowan, cold eyes fixed on me. It was only thanks to a kind neighbor that I was helped to my feet and led aside to rest.

After the commotion, the adoption ceremony went on as if nothing had happened. Mom and Dad smiled and chatted with Rowan, completely unbothered.

I sat alone, pressing a cold towel to my face, when I suddenly saw a school staff member rushing to my door.

"Hunter, the school just confirmed—you got the transfer slot back to the city! Pack your things and head to the station now! The bus from the city is already here to pick you up!"

Thankfully, I was about to leave for the training program. At least I would have some peace for a while. If Lorraine wanted to hang around outside the school, that was her business. The whole training and grading period lasted a full three months.Nina wrote to me every day. She told me that Lorraine had come to her, trying to broker a position for herself in the military, just to take me away from her. She said Lorraine almost got down on her knees.I joked in a letter, asking if she would be tempted to give me up for a better job. It was just a tease, but somehow, sending that letter made me feel unexpectedly tense. How would Nina answer? Would she really give me up for a better job? When the reply finally came, I couldn't bring myself to open it. I was too afraid I would get the answer I didn't want. But what was I so nervous about? Didn't we agree from the start that this was just a mutually beneficial arrangement?Yet, living day by day with Nina, I could feel myself slowly

"I don't want to repeat what I've been through—it's pointless," I said. "And you don't need to defend her, Colonel Williams. Once I make a decision, I don't look back."River looked at me, sighed, and lowered his eyes.He had seen me work myself ragged for Lorraine, day and night, earning money. He had seen me nurse her through a high fever for three straight days, only to miss my promotion opportunity. And what was Lorraine doing? She flirted openly with Rowan, using the excuse of caring for her adopted brother to hand over everything that belonged to me.People in the unit had tried to intervene more than once. They had tried to reason with Lorraine, but each time, it seemed only to strengthen her attachment to Rowan. She went behind my back and made him her family.River sighed. "Part of this is my fault, too. I should've stepped in earlier, warned Lorraine—maybe she wouldn't have fallen for Rowan's schemes… Now, Hunter, I just want to ask you one last thing."Is there really

During this transition, Nina handled everything with competence.I overheard someone joking with her, saying she married a man who had already been divorced, essentially just "taking over someone's leftovers".Her face darkened on the spot, and she threw the person straight out of the house. The Lawsons stood firmly behind her, making it clear there would be no more contact between the two families. As that person passed me at the door, they spat on the ground and sneered."All that over a man who got cheated on? Everyone knows Hunter Jackson got dumped and ran back to the city like a coward."Nina was livid. She rushed forward and beat the person down without hesitation. In the end, both ended up in the clinic, though the other party came out worse.I bought some antiseptic and helped dress her wounds. Watching her whine, I couldn't help but laugh a little. "Now, you're in pain? Didn't expect someone who looks this gentle to throw punches like that."Her face was bruised, but h

And what about Lorraine? With a single, casual sentence, she erased everything I had worked for, stripping me of my transfer slot into the unit. She didn't even bother telling me.Instead, she just let me find out on my own, break down, and make a scene, all because of one reason—she was certain I would never leave her.I felt a wave of nausea. Only now did I see how cold, controlling, and selfish Lorraine truly was."We're divorced," I said flatly, glaring at her. "Whatever you're here for, just say it."Lorraine's tone softened. "Alright, alright. You're a grown man. Stop throwing a tantrum. I'm here today to bring you back. I've already filed the document."This whole divorce thing was just a misunderstanding and an act of impulse on your part. Come home with me. I'll let this go. I'll even give you the transfer slot into the unit, okay?"She spoke like she was making peace, but her expression still carried that edge, like she was dressing me down for stepping out of line. Wh

I was stunned, finding it all hard to believe. It took me a long moment before I could ask, "Why… are you helping me?"Getting a house was no small matter. Nina’s brother sure wasn’t some minor player. Many families of six squeezed into a single room, and they couldn't even hope for a proper house. If the house were registered in my name, half of it would belong to me. Nina had no reason to do this for me… unless she had a thing for me.I thought that over, carefully studying her expression. She laughed lightly, open and straightforward."Honestly, my parents have been pushing me to find someone all these years, but I never met the right person," she confessed."We know each other well, and my parents like you. If we get together, they'd be happy. I know you just got divorced. I'm not trying to take advantage of you—think of it as us helping each other out."It made sense. Nina and I grew up on the same street. If she had feelings for me, I would have noticed long ago. Seeing her

After comforting Rowan, Lorraine's mind suddenly flashed with my dazed expression. She had never seen me look so broken. One of her subordinates said, "Mr. Jackson really worked hard for that transfer slot. Even the higher-ups thought it should've been his."Thinking back to how I had fallen to the ground, Lorraine felt a pang of guilt for going too far. Maybe it was the guilt that made her soften a little."It's already been settled with Rowan," she said. "It can't be changed. But… I can try to see if they'll approve an extra slot for Hunter."Yet, after submitting the application, the higher-ups told her, "Hunter said that he'd discussed things with you last month. He was willing to divorce so the transfer slot would be legally his. I already approved it—didn't you know?"…Most of the people on the bus weremy fellow colleagues assigned here together. There, I spotted a familiar face—Nina Lawson. We hadn't seen each other much after university. I hadn't expected that she, too,
