Chapter 5

Author: Northern Puppy
The next day, Raymond was gone.

By the time Mom noticed, his small bed was empty, and the blanket was folded unevenly. It was the first time he had ever made his own bed.

"Ray?"

Mom called out as she headed toward the bathroom. She searched under the bed, inside the wardrobe, and out on the balcony, but she found no trace of him.

Her voice began to tremble. "Did he go to the grocery store to look for Emilia?"

I moved faster than my parents. The instant the thought formed, I drifted to the front of the grocery store. Sure enough, Raymond was there.

The neighborhood was nearly empty in the early morning, except for a few elderly people out exercising. Raymond stood at the store entrance. His small hands were tightly clenched around the hem of his shirt.

Mr. Harris was unloading supplies. When he spotted Raymond, he froze for a moment. "Raymond? What are you—"

Raymond's voice was quiet but resolute. "Mr. Harris, please, let my sister go."

He pulled a handful of change from his pocket. There were single dollars and several coins. He carefully arranged them in a row on the ground. "This is everything I've saved. I'm giving it all to you. I won't ever steal anything again."

Then, he dropped to his knees and begged him. "I really won't steal anymore. Please let Emilia come home."

He kept pleading until his voice turned hoarse.

Mr. Harris was flustered and tried to pull him up. "Kid, get up now."

However, Raymond refused to stand. He continued begging.

People nearby began to gather. A woman buying groceries, an old man walking his dog, and students on their way to school all stared at them.

"What's going on here?"

"Isn't that Franklin?"

"Why is this child kneeling here and begging?"

The chatter rose like a tide. Mr. Harris' face flushed, then drained of color. He pulled out his phone and dialed frantically. "Hello? Callie?"

He turned his back and lowered his voice. "Your son is kneeling here in front of me. Yes, he's begging me… There are people everywhere… I can't keep up this act anymore!"

After hanging up, Mr. Harris hauled Raymond to his feet. "Your mom's on her way. We'll go get Emilia, okay?"

Raymond's eyes lit up instantly. He scrambled up, not even bothering to brush the dirt off his knees. "Really? Can Emilia actually come home?"

"Yes, really," Mr. Harris replied.

I drifted to Raymond's side, wanting to dust him off. However, my fingers passed straight through his knee, and I could do nothing. Still, I saw the radiance in his eyes. That determination of wanting to save his sister made him look like a little hero.

My parents arrived shortly after.

Mom tried to take Raymond's hand, but he pulled away. "I want to go get Emilia."

His tone held a persistence Mom had never heard before. She was stunned.

Dad crouched down and looked Raymond in the eye. "Ray, I promise you, we're going to get Emilia right now."

"You promise?" Raymond asked.

"I promise," Dad answered.

On the way to the warehouse, Raymond was restless. He pressed his face against the car window, staring outside without blinking. "Are we almost there? How much further? Will Emilia be mad?"

Mom held his hand and said softly, "No, Emilia won't be angry."

Her voice was gentle, yet I noticed that her hand was shaking. Dad remained silent the entire way, driving very fast.

I hovered on the roof of the car, watching the familiar city streak past beneath me. The sunlight was bright, spreading across the streets and over pedestrians who were alive and able to feel its warmth. As for me, I was only a shadow.

They reached the warehouse. Mr. Harris' hands trembled slightly as he unlocked the door. He rambled, "Emilia is inside. I even brought her bread and water yesterday…"

Raymond rushed inside without hesitation. "Emilia!"

Dad stared at the line in the notebook for a very long time. Then, he closed it and pressed it to his chest, as if he were holding me.Raymond had grown a lot. He was already taller than I ever was.He no longer mentioned me, but I knew that he had never forgotten. The drawings we had made together hung on the wall of his room, and he always kept the pencil I gave him inside his backpack.Every year, when he made his birthday wishes, the first was always, "I hope Emilia is doing well on the other side."His second wish was, "I hope Mom and Dad stay healthy."The third wish was, "I hope I grow up quickly so I can protect Mom and Dad."He was no longer the little boy who needed his sister to give in to him. He had learned how to protect others.…Ten years later, Raymond got accepted into a university in the city I had once said I wanted to go to.On the day my parents sent him to the station, Mom cried and said, "Take good care of yourself."Raymond hugged her. "I will. Mom, d

Raymond stood on his tiptoes and imitated our parents by planting a kiss on my other cheek. "Goodbye, Emilia."When my body was pushed into the cremation chamber, Mom finally broke down. She tried to rush forward, but Dad held her back with all his might."My daughter… oh, my daughter," Mom wailed."Let her leave in peace," Dad said. "We put her through so much suffering. Let her be at ease now."Mom collapsed onto the floor, crying until she nearly fainted. As I watched them, I suddenly felt exhausted. It turned out that even spirits could feel tired.I drifted in front of Mom, wanting to hug her one last time. My hands still passed through her, but I sensed her calming slightly. Perhaps she felt my presence, or perhaps she didn't, but none of that mattered anymore.I floated over to Dad, intending to wipe away his tears. He raised his head and stared into the air. His eyes were vacant."Emilia, is that you?" he asked softly. It was me, but I couldn't say it. I could only circ

Grandma cried until her voice broke. "My sweetheart… how could you leave us like this?"Grandpa stood to the side as tears streamed down his face.Granny and Gramps pulled Mom into their arms, and they all wept together. Granny patted Mom's back and said, "How could you be so foolish?""I know… I know…"Mom could only repeat those words. The adults began discussing my funeral arrangements. Grandma insisted on taking me back to Dad's hometown and holding the funeral according to local customs there.Mom refused. "Emilia is my daughter. I want to see her off myself."Grandma glared at her with bloodshot eyes. "Now, you remember that she's your daughter? Why didn't you think of that when you let someone else take her?"Grandma's words hit Mom like a slap, and Mom's face went pale.Dad tried to soothe Grandma. "Mom—"Grandma turned to him. "Don't call me Mom! You're responsible too! You're the head of this family; how could you let her act so recklessly?""I…"Dad was left spee

That night, the four of us stayed in the same room, three living souls and one corpse.Dad sat motionless on the couch, cradling my body. Mom sat on the other side, holding Raymond. Raymond had cried until he was exhausted and fell asleep. He was still sobbing softly in his dreams.Mom gently patted his back, but her gaze never left me. She spoke up suddenly, and her voice was soft. "Emilia was terrified of thunder when she was little. Whenever it thundered, she would burrow into my arms and hide her head there."Dad remained silent, only tightening his embrace around me.Mom continued, "When she was three years old, I took her to the park. She saw other children eating ice cream and watched them longingly, but she didn't ask for any. When I asked if she wanted some, she shook her head and said that it was too expensive."Mom sniffled. "It broke my heart, so I bought it for her anyway. She was so happy. She licked it little by little. She took the entire afternoon to finish it. Af

A neighbor took Raymond away for the time being. As he left, he kept turning back to look at me. His eyes were filled with confusion and fear.He still didn't understand what death meant. All he knew was that I was no longer able to move, my hands were cold, and I wasn't coming home with him.The police arrived as well. As they led Mr. Harris away, he kept repeating, "Callie said to just lock her up for two days… She said it was just to scare Raymond…"Mom sat on the bench at the police station, completely still."Why did you do this?" a police officer asked her.Mom opened her mouth, but no sound came out. She didn't even know why she had done that. It might have been her son's habit of stealing, her desire to teach him a lesson, or her belief in the absurd idea that her daughter's purpose was fulfilled once a brother joined the family. She finally spoke, and her voice was incredibly hoarse. "I only wanted… wanted him to remember. I never thought… I never imagined that it would

The warehouse was dark, with towering crates stacked like a labyrinth. Only the high ventilation window let in a sliver of light."Emilia?" Mom called out. Her voice was faint in the cavernous space. She walked past several rows of crates and suddenly came to a halt.Dad stood at the entrance and didn't go in immediately. His face was ghastly pale. He stared intently into the depths of the warehouse, as if he were waiting for something—or perhaps fearing something.Raymond had already sprinted behind the crates. "Emilia! Where are you? We've come to get you!""Emilia, stop hiding. I'm here to take you home." Mom's voice echoed between the crates, but there was no reply. Her throat tightened as she spoke again. "Emilia, quit hiding. I've come for you."She kept walking forward until she spotted a heap of collapsed cardboard boxes in the corner. Beside the boxes, a small figure lay curled up and motionless, wearing the yellow dress she had put on me yesterday.Mom froze in place.
