Chapter 3

Author: Mister Rhapsody
They kept me under watch and wouldn’t let me use my phone.

All I could do was stay in the room and wait for the police to finish their investigation.

Dad and my uncle sat nearby, watching me and smoking one cigarette after another.

Whenever I met Dad’s eyes, I saw that he no longer saw me as his daughter. To him, I was an enemy—a monster who had tormented him for ten years.

I didn’t blame him.

I saw my mother’s murder. I saw the killer’s face, and I remembered everything.

Yet no matter what Dad did, he couldn’t get a word of it out of me.

He loved Mom.

After she died, bringing her killer to justice became the only thing that kept him going.

He gave up everything and spent ten years chasing answers until he barely seemed alive.

But he found nothing.

Then he discovered I could speak. The shock hadn’t left me unable to talk.

I was pretending and hiding what I knew.

He also found out that I had been raped.

The man who raped me died on the street a week before Mom’s murder, his limbs twisted grotesquely.

Dad suspected I killed him.

In his mind, I was capable of murder and ruthless enough to do it, so he concluded that I blamed Mom too and hired someone to kill her. That was why I refused to identify her killer.

His reasoning made sense.

I didn’t defend myself.

I waited in silence for the police to finish their investigation.

Ring, ring—

Dad’s phone rang. He answered it at once.

I knew the voice on the other end well. It was Leo Lane, the lead investigator. “Darren, are you with Lynn?”

Dad’s voice was hoarse. “Yes! Did Lynn have anything to do with that monster’s death?”

“Yes. Keep Lynn there. We’re on our way.”

The moment the call ended, Dad punched me hard in the face.

“If you could kill the man who hurt you, why did you keep blaming your mother?

“She didn’t refuse to call the police because she didn’t love you. She thought she was protecting you! Things were different back then. She was afraid people would shame you until you couldn’t bear it!

“Before she came back to stay with you, she missed you so much she couldn’t sleep. She held your photo and cried night after night.

“How… how could you…”

Dad couldn’t finish.

He broke down, buried his face in his hands, and cried until his voice turned raw.

My uncle smoked in silence. He looked at me as though I were a stranger, or some kind of monster.

I held my swollen cheek and stared at the ceiling without expression.

A tear seemed to slide down my face. It tickled.

I wiped it away and told myself, “Soon. It’ll be soon. This will all be over soon.”

Twenty minutes later, Leo arrived with several officers.

He snapped cold handcuffs around my wrists.

“Lynn Wade, you’re suspected of involvement in a murder from ten years ago. Come with us for questioning.”

Dad stared at me and shook his head violently.“Bullshit! Your mother could never kill anyone!“If she killed that man for you, why protect her murderer? Why wouldn’t you tell us the truth, no matter how many times we asked?”I smiled.I couldn’t help looking up at the night sky.Mom’s spirit was gone, but I could almost make out her shape, as though she were still beside me.“Because Mom wouldn’t let me. Dad, did you know? For the past ten years, I saw her spirit every single day…”I couldn’t hide it anymore. They had found the shed. I had no choice but to tell them everything sooner than I planned. When they learned that Mom’s spirit was the reason I stayed silent about her killer, Dad and my uncle stood with their mouths open, unable to speak for a long time. They instinctively doubted me, but they wanted my story to be true.If it was, I wasn’t a killer or a monster. I was still their family.“No… That’s impossible!”Dad finally broke the silence. “If that’s true, your mother’s spi

“Ah!”He screamed in pain and twisted away.“Are you insane? Stop! L-Lynn, this isn’t ten years ago. If you kill me, you won’t get away with it!”The saw blade cut into his thigh. When he twisted away, I moved closer with it.Only then did he realize I intended to kill him and that I could go through with it.“Ah!”In the empty shed, his screams gradually drowned out the rain and thunder. He struggled desperately. There was nothing left in his eyes but fear.“I was wrong! I can give you money!“I have plenty. Let me go, and I’ll give you whatever you want!”I almost laughed.I wanted only his life.He tortured Mom for three hours. I remembered every minute. The night was long, and I had barely begun.I didn’t know whether it was excitement or my body’s instinctive revulsion.Nausea surged through me, and I vomited. The killer had passed out from the pain. The stale air in the shed smelled of blood, filth, and dust.Suddenly, everything was quiet. The rain had stopped.I couldn’t stop y

Before I could speak, the killer shouted even louder.“Are you fucking deaf? Let me go and get out of here. Stay away, and I’ll pretend this never happened! But if you lay a finger on me…“Your dad and uncle are still alive, aren’t they? One word from me, and my men will send them out of the country. They’ll wish they were dead. I’ll make you watch them suffer, just like you watched me torture your mother to death!”He licked his lips, his eyes wild. “Want me to remind you what it was like?”His words dragged me back to that nightmare of a night.Mom’s screams woke me from my sleep.I ran to her bedroom and saw that he had tied her up. She fought desperately against the ropes.“Run! Lynnie, run!”But my legs went weak. I couldn’t escape. He lunged at me, grabbed my hair, and slammed my head against the wall again and again.Blood covered my face. I had no strength left to fight when he tied me up.Through the haze, I heard Mom begging him.“Please. I’m begging you, let her go. Don’t to

Ten years of waiting made our hatred grow beyond measure.I was certain that if Dad and my uncle knew who the killer was, they wouldn’t call the police. An execution would be far too easy for him.I felt the same way.I wanted him to suffer ten times, a hundred times more than Mom had.I would bear the consequences alone.“Why did you agree? Do you still think of her as your niece? If she were normal, if she had a conscience, how could she protect the killer for ten years?”As I got out of the car, I faintly heard Dad questioning my uncle. My uncle sighed. “We’ve waited ten years. What’s one more month?”“Who knows what she’ll do with that month? If she had something to do with Susan’s death, what’s to stop her from coming after us…”I walked too far away to hear the rest. After I was raped ten years ago, I withdrew into myself and barely spoke to anyone. When Mom died, I refused to identify her killer. Even Dad and my uncle, the people closest to me, turned away from me.I had lost ev

No one knew that Mom didn’t disappear completely after she was murdered. Her spirit remained. But it was incomplete, with only a fragment of awareness left. That fragment couldn’t think for itself or speak with me. It could only repeat the same warnings by instinct.“Lynnie, don’t tell.”“Lynnie, stay alive.”I understood what she meant.I knew who killed her. He was a local supplier with a large business and powerful connections. He kept dangerous men on his payroll and showed no mercy. My survival was an accident. The killer tied me up and forced me to watch as he tortured Mom to death. Then he set the house on fire to destroy the evidence and burn me alive.I managed to break free and survived by sheer luck. When I was rescued, one of the killer’s men stood near me, alongside the police. He leaned close to my ear and whispered, “Say a word, and your whole family dies.”That was the moment Mom’s spirit appeared.Over and over, she urged me to stay silent, protect myself, and live.I

In the interrogation room, Leo showed me a photograph of the victim. He was dead, and ten years had passed. But the sight of his face still made me shake with fear that reached into my bones. He was the man who followed and raped me ten years ago.It took me a long time to calm down.“Do you know him?” Leo asked.I nodded.“How?”There was no point hiding it. I picked up a pen to write my answer, but Leo cleared his throat. “You can stop pretending. Your father told us you can speak. You don’t have aphasia.”I gave a bitter smile, set down the pen, and said, “He raped me.”“Why didn’t you report it?”“My mother wouldn’t let me.”Leo’s voice turned stern, and his gaze sharpened. “So, you took revenge and murdered him?”I shook my head. “I didn’t kill him.”“You’re still denying it? We couldn’t solve his murder ten years ago because we didn’t have the technology. After your father came to us, we examined the evidence again. We found traces of your skin on his frozen remains.
