Chapter 4

Autor: Huge Whale
At 4:00 am, I opened my eyes.

Under the moonlight shining outside, I slung my black canvas bag over my shoulder. Then, I quietly opened the bedroom door.

The living room was pitch-black, except for the faint green light blinking on the router.

I kept my footsteps light as I made my way to the entryway. I slipped on my worn-out, faded sneakers. With my hand on the doorknob, I turned back and took one last look at the home I had lived in for 18 years.

Jonathan's leftover supper from the night before was still sitting on the coffee table. Jasmine's new dress was tossed on the couch. Everything was just as it always was.

I pressed down on the handle, opened the door, and closed it behind me.

The streets were quiet at that hour. I walked to the bus stop at the end of the street and caught the first bus to the train station. The bus was empty.

I leaned against the window, watching the streetlights pass one by one.

My phone buzzed. It was a message Mom had sent in the family group chat at 11:00 pm the night before.

"Tomorrow morning, I'm going to your aunt's place to visit family. Josh, get up early and make breakfast."

I didn't reply. I simply powered off my phone and shoved it into the deepest corner of my bag.

By the time I reached the train station, a group of young people carrying bags like mine had already gathered in the waiting hall. The group leader was checking names against a list.

"Joshua Hayes?"

"Here."

"Get on the train. It's a long journey. Get some rest."

I nodded, got my ticket checked, and boarded the train.

The train slowly pulled away with a deep rumble. The city outside the window gradually blurred into the distance.

At 8:00 am, in the Hayes residence, Mom yawned as she came out of the master bedroom and glanced at the empty dining table.

"Josh? Josh!" she called twice, but no one answered. She walked to my bedroom and shoved the door open. "You little brat. What time is it? You still haven't made breakfast—"

Her voice abruptly cut off.

The room was completely empty. Right in the center of the desk sat my acceptance letter, all alone. My house keys were placed on top of it.

Mom froze. "Honey! Honey, come here!"

Dad threw on his jacket as he walked over, brows furrowed. "What are you yelling about this early in the morning?"

"Look!" Mom pointed at the keys on the desk.

Dad walked over and picked up the keys and acceptance letter. "What is this kid up to? Why would he leave his acceptance letter here?"

Jonathan stumbled out of his room, his hair messy. "Is breakfast ready? I'm starving."

"Your brother is gone," Dad said grimly.

"Eh, he probably went to work at the restaurant. Didn't he say today was his first day?" Jonathan couldn't care less.

"Then why did he leave his keys behind?" Mom still felt that something was wrong.

"He probably forgot. You know what he's like. He's always losing things and forgetting where he puts them." Jonathan yawned and went to the fridge to find something to eat.

Dad tossed the keys onto the table and said, "Forget about him. He's a grown man. It's not like he can just disappear."

That night, Jonathan hurried home. "Mom, Dad, where's our household registration? My loan has to be approved today. They need to see the original document."

Mom wiped her hands on her apron. "It's in the drawer in the master bedroom. Go get it yourself."

Jonathan rushed into the master bedroom and pulled out the document. As he walked back out, he flipped through the pages.

First page—Dad. Second page—Mom. Third page—himself. Fourth page—Joshua.

Jonathan suddenly stopped in the middle of the living room. He stared at the page bearing my name.

"What are you standing there for? Hurry up and get it done." Dad urged Jonathan when he saw him not moving.

Jonathan looked up, his face turning pale. He handed the papers to Dad. "Dad… Look at Josh's page."

Dad took the document, confused, and his eyes fell on the page. In the upper-right corner of the page were the bright red words "Transferred Out."

I put on my thick windbreaker and followed the guard toward the main gate.A tall barbed-wire fence surrounded the entrance, with yellow security tape stretched beyond it. The wind howled, whipping loose snow across the ground.About 30 feet away, I saw them. Dad was bundled in a thick down jacket, shivering violently from the cold. Mom's face was bright red from the wind, while Jonathan hunched his shoulders and stomped his feet repeatedly. When they saw me walk out, they froze for a moment.I was wearing the facility's army green uniform. My hair was shaved short. The wind and sand had roughened my skin, and my shoulders had grown noticeably broader. I was no longer the timid second son who wore torn old clothes."Josh! Josh!" Mom was the first to react. She rushed to the fence, tears and snot streaming down her face. "We finally found you! You little brat! Why did you come to this miserable place?" She sobbed bitterly. But I felt nothing."What are you doing here?" I

Professor Campbell paused for a moment, then smiled. "I see. It's a good vote." He patted my shoulder and said, "Go check the equipment in Sector D. You're in charge today.""Yes, sir."I tightened my grip on the shovel and headed toward the laboratory. The winter wind was fierce, but I didn't take a single step back.Just before the New Year holidays, the Hayes family had their biggest fight yet.Jonathan's startup finally collapsed completely. Not only had he failed to make money, but he now owed investors more than 300 thousand dollars.Debt collectors started calling the house. Someone even sprayed "Pay Your Debts" in red paint along the apartment hallway.Dad's blood pressure spiked so badly that he ended up in the hospital. Mom sat beside his bed, wiping away tears. She finally couldn't hold back and said to Jasmine, "Jas, don't you have some savings from birthdays and your allowance? Give some of it to Jon to help him get through this."Jasmine took a step backward and

Mom couldn't remember how she got home. When she pushed open the front door, Dad was sitting on the couch, smoking. The living room was thick with cigarette smoke."Did you find him?" Without turning around, Dad asked impatiently.Mom said nothing. She absentmindedly walked to the coffee table and placed the photocopied confirmation letter they had gotten from Mr. Lawson on top of it."What's this?" Dad picked up the document and glanced at it. Cigarette ash fell onto his pant leg, but he didn't even notice."Northwest… National classified research program?" He shot to his feet, his voice rising several octaves. "That's impossible! How could he qualify for something like this?"Just then, Jonathan staggered in through the front door, reeking of alcohol. He had spent the afternoon trying to salvage his business by meeting with investors. But in the end, he'd been humiliated by having a drink thrown in his face."Dad, don't look at that!" Jonathan snatched the paper and ripped

The freshman registration area at the local teachers college was packed. Jonathan and Mom stood in the middle of the crowd, both sweating under the heat."Mom, are you sure Josh never showed up?" Jonathan tugged irritably at his collar."I already asked the counselor. They said no student named Joshua Hayes ever enrolled," Mom replied, her face pale. The past three months had been a disaster for my family. With one less person listed in the household registration and insufficient collateral to secure financing, Jonathan's business loan application had been rejected by the bank. Unable to pay the rent for his office space, he'd been kicked out and forced to run his startup from home.Jasmine had finally gotten her wish and converted my old bedroom into a walk-in closet. But she soon discovered that there was nobody to wake up at 6:00 am every morning to iron her clothes anymore. There was no one to carry her online shopping packages up six flights of stairs.Dad's beloved coff

"What… What is this?"Dad shot to his feet so fast that the household registration documents nearly slipped from his hands.Hearing the commotion, Mom rushed out of the kitchen. "Honey, what's wrong?"She leaned over to take a look, then froze. "Transferred out? Josh has transferred out of our household? Where did he transfer to?"Jonathan gulped. "I just looked more carefully. It says he's been transferred to a confidential facility somewhere in the Northwest.""A confidential location?" Dad's brows furrowed. "He's a kid who just graduated high school. Why is he going to a confidential facility?"At that moment, Jasmine emerged from the bathroom with a face mask on."Oh, come on. Why is everyone freaking out? He's obviously scared we'll make him attend the teachers college, so he's pretending to run away from home. He's probably just working in some factory somewhere. As if he'd qualify to be assigned to some confidential facility."Her words seemed to calm Dad slightly. He
