Chapter 2

Author: alone
My soul trailed closely behind Magnus, Tala, and Ronan.

Magnus took Tala to the healer, Sage Rootweaver, but after a quick check, the latter dismissed the wound as an injury too minor to be treated.

Just before they left, Magnus finally remembered to ask Sage about my medicine. Sage replied that it would be developed and ready soon.

Magnus then took Tala and Ronan to a restaurant. Tala took out her phone to take photos of them and posted everything on her social media account.

In the photos, Magnus fed Ronan pasta, and the three of them looked as close as an actual family. He had no idea that back at home, my body was slowly growing colder.

Just as they finished their meal, Magnus was about to take Ronan home when Fenrick Grimfang, one of the pack warriors, approached them.

"Alpha Magnus," Fenrick reported. "Luna Maeve ordered me to pass you a message. She said that if you continue staying with this she-wolf, don't bother coming back, because she'll kill Tala herself."

Fenrick had once been a Rogue after leaving his pack. I was the one who begged Magnus to let him join ours, never expecting him to say such words and lie to Magnus.

When Tala heard Fenrick's words, her face turned stark white, and tears spilled from the corners of her eyes. She wept, "I don't want to die, Alpha Magnus! You should just go back to your Luna."

Rage was written all over Magnus' face as he slammed his knife heavily onto the plate with a deafening clatter. He tried to reach me through our mind-link but failed, so he furiously pulled out his phone and dialed my number nine times in a row.

I didn't answer that either.

His expression darkened as he gritted his teeth and growled, "Well, well. My Luna has learned to threaten me now."

Tala sniffled. "I'm scared, Alpha Magnus. What if Luna Maeve really comes over to kill me? Ronan is still here listening to us, yet she doesn't care if he gets scared at all."

Magnus looked at the she-wolf beside him, then at the innocent Ronan. There was a deep disgust in his voice as he barked an order.

"Fenrick, go back and tell the Luna that I am not coming home. She can reflect on her behavior and contact me when she's come to her senses."

He lifted Ronan into his arms, took Tala's hand, and gently said, "We're going to Spring Hunt Caravan. Forget about her. I'll seriously consider ending our mate bond when we get back."

Fenrick bowed respectfully and left.

Just before leaving the restaurant, Magnus texted me.

"Don't bother coming to Spring Hunt Caravan, Maeve. Tala's just an Omega, so I don't understand why you can't just tolerate her existence."

Magnus never received another word from me. He assumed I had truly come to my senses and was quietly waiting at home for his return.

But back home, my body had silently begun to rot, and everyone was none the wiser.

At the party Magnus and I attended together, he had drunk some of the wolfsbane before I stepped in to finish the rest of the drink. But he was stronger, so the wolfsbane stayed dormant in his body. After my death, his health deteriorated, which gave the wolfsbane the perfect chance to strike. The antidote developed by Sage had expired, and due to a shortage of herbs, a second batch couldn't be brewed. Sage could only offer Magnus basic potions to delay the onset of the symptoms, but Magnus refused them.He calmly said, "Let me experience the pain Maeve endured before I die."After handing almost all his pack responsibilities to his most trusted Beta, he began searching for an Alpha heir. He asked the Elders and Cinder to protect Ronan so he could grow up carefree, but even without his request, they would have treated him with immense kindness anyway.Together with Ronan, they moved back to the house we once shared. After learning of my death, Ronan turned exceptionally sensible.

Magnus arranged to meet Tala and Fenwick in a deserted square. He promised to give them money and write a letter of recommendation to the Alpha of another pack so they wouldn't end up as Rogues.Neither Tala nor Fenwick suspected a thing. They assumed that after all this time, Magnus had moved on from everything and was now a pack leader who was simply concerned for his pack. They secretly gloated and plotted that after receiving the money, they would use Magnus' letter to join a new pack and start afresh. The square was completely empty.Magnus handed Tala a briefcase. The moment she took it, her expression changed."What's going on? Why is it empty?"Fenwick grabbed the briefcase to check, while Magnus remained silent. Instead, he pulled out his phone and tapped on a video recording that played back Tala and Fenwick's past conversation."Cut the crap. All you need to do is tell him that Luna Maeve ordered him to do all of it. Once she's dead, I can take her place, and you'll g

My funeral was held two days later.Magnus sent my soul back to the forest so I would return to the Moon Goddess' embrace. He held my photograph tightly against his chest. His eyes were bloodshot, and dark circles ringed the corners. He was also losing weight at a visibly rapid pace.As I drifted up into the sky, I sensed that his wolf had grown so weak it could no longer speak. He barely moved, and only the tears kept falling. From time to time, my voice echoed in his ears. One moment, it was the sound of my voice from our mating ceremony, saying that I accepted him as my mate. The next moment, it was the sound of me calling him to dinner.Everything played on a constant, relentless loop.My phone was still in Magnus' pocket. He had fully charged the battery for me.The password was the date his wolf first awakened, so he unlocked it effortlessly.I started keeping a journal ever since my wolf began to weaken.Magnus tapped on the entries, which were a complete log of the phy

Magnus' anguished howl echoed through the pack. His paws slammed the ground with deafening force, shredding the couch until its stuffing flew across the entire room.Suddenly, his claws caught onto a piece of paper, forcing his movements to a complete halt. The moment he recognized my handwriting, he calmed down and shifted back.It was a note I had left for him before he came home. It had originally been resting right next to Ronan's sweater, but Tala had slipped it between the couch cushions while he wasn't paying attention. The words were crooked and uneven, written when I was too weak to hold the pen.He carefully read the words with bloodshot eyes."To my mate, Alpha Magnus. "This may be the last meal I ever make for you and Ronan. I can feel that my body will not survive long enough to see the day the healer succeeds in developing the antidote. I have let you down."I remember how much you used to love my meat stew, which was why I always loved making it for you. But late

Magnus shuddered. He pointed at the house in disbelief and roared, "How is that even possible? You all must have scared her by gathering here, so she's hiding somewhere!"He refused to believe that I was dead. When he came home yesterday, the meat stew had been cooking in the pot, and he had personally covered me with a blanket. I had even handed Fenwick a knife from home to threaten him.To him, I was only poisoned by wolfsbane, and Sage had constantly provided me with potions to delay its onset. Now that the antidote was finally developed and ready, how could I possibly be dead? And how was my body already rotting?Tala played along from the side, pretending to be completely in the dark. "Luna Maeve threatened to kill me with a knife yesterday, so there's no way she's dead. You all must have made a mistake!"She frantically dragged Fenwick forward to testify on her behalf. "If you don't trust me, just ask Fenwick. Luna Maeve personally gave him the knife."The surrounding wol

Magnus didn't sleep well at all that night. The moment dawn broke, he ordered Fenwick to get the car ready and headed home with Tala and Ronan. Throughout the entire ride, Tala kept telling him that I had to be angry and pleaded with him not to lose his temper when he saw me.After failing to reach me for so long, Magnus grew increasingly agitated. He swore to himself that once I had taken Sage's antidote, he would use our mind-link to keep an eye on me at all times. But when he pulled up to the front door, he froze. A large crowd of wolves had gathered around our house, standing together and murmuring relentlessly about something.Magnus immediately panicked, desperate to figure out what had happened.A strange smell hung thick in the air.Tala clung to Magnus in fear and whimpered, "Alpha Magnus, Luna Maeve couldn't have murdered someone, could she? Is she trying to prove to you that she'd really kill me?"There was a hint of malicious glee in her voice.Magnus' rage reached
