Chapter 3

Author: Cool Husky
I lost my balance and fell hard onto the ground. My waist slammed into a steel chair at the side, and it hurt so much that I broke out in a cold sweat.

Rebecca suddenly looked a little worried when she saw the pain on my face. "What's wrong with you, Hayden?"

When Simon noticed this, he suddenly went crazy. "This is all my fault. All I wanted was for Rebecca to bring me some medication to save my life because I was feeling terrible. I have no idea what I did wrong. All I want is to continue living. Why did you get so many people to put up this act, Hayden? Why do you want me dead?

"I checked with my doctor on the way here, and he told me there isn't any patient here with cerebral haemorrhage. You just wanted us at the hospital so that Mrs. Chilton could yell at me for being the third party in your marriage, but the truth is, I only see Rebecca as my sister.

"Please let me off, Hayden! If you continue forcing me like this, I will die!"

With that, Simon turned to run out the door.

Rebecca was distracted by him, and she ran after Simon to hug him gently in her arms. "Don't worry, Simon. Hayden can never bully you with me around. Let's go!"

The nurse next to us rolled her eyes and passed Rebecca the consent form. "Wait a minute. Please sign this."

Rebecca did not even glance at the form. She quickly signed the papers and left with Simon. Whatever her actions were did not concern me because the most important thing was to save my mother-in-law.

I led the donor toward the surgery room while still in pain, and when we reached the corridor, the nurse rushed over to me. "The patient is in critical condition. We need to go give her blood now!"

Fear enveloped me, and when the donor witnessed the emergency, he knew right away that Simon was lying. He pulled up his sleeve and made to follow the nurse. "I'm ready. You can take my blood right now!"

However, it was still too late. The doors to the surgery room opened, and Jack walked out the door to shake his head apologetically at us. "I'm so sorry. The patient was not in a healthy condition to begin with, and we weren't able to resuscitate her. We've done our best."

I fell on my knees while gripping my phone, unable to say another word.

My mother-in-law's body was wheeled out, and Jack stood at the side to sign the death certificate. My eyes were filled with tears as I stared at the white cloth over her body. That was when it truly hit me that the benevolent old lady who always cared for me would never wake up again. I failed to save her life even after getting reborn.

After I was done with handling all procedures, I sat outside the morgue, waiting for my father-in-law. That was when my phone rang. Rebecca had unblocked my number and was being aloof with me. "Why isn't my mother picking up her phone, Hayden? Ask her how I should make chicken noodle soup."

I wiped away my tears and said coldly, "The surgery was a failure. Mom's gone."

"Are you still putting on this act? How annoying can you be?!" Rebecca could no longer hold back her temper, and she yelled at me.

"Don't you dare cross the line with me, Hayden!" She hung up after that.

I took a picture of the morgue and sent it to her. [You should come over right now if you want to see Mom one last time.]

However, my message was ignored.

The next day, I went home, exhausted, before dawn, with my mother-in-law's funeral portrait and documents. When Rebecca heard me coming home, she walked out of the room. She frowned when she saw me.

Before any one of us said anything, she saw the portrait and saw that I was wearing black, which enraged her. She walked up to me and slapped me hard. "You're pushing it, Hayden. How could you order a funeral portrait of my mother just for your little performance? My family doesn't need a traitor like you. Get out!"

Rebecca pushed me out the door, and I hit my waist against the railing of the stairs, causing me intense pain. I inhaled sharply and fell right down the stairs when I lost my footing.

The next time I heard about Rebecca and Simon was from the middle-aged lady staying downstairs. After texting Rebecca that day, she took my advice to investigate Simon by checking his purchase records and found that he bought oil. Simon initially denied everything, but when Rebecca insisted on reaching out to me to analyze the material I found, Simon broke and admitted to everything.Rebecca fell apart when she found out Simon snuck into our house to cover the stairs with oil because he wanted me dead so that he could become Rebecca's husband. Her eyes turned red as she roared while pushing Simon down the stairs to give him a taste of his own medicine.During their struggle, Rebecca fell down the stairs along with him, and the commotion alerted the neighbors enough to call the police. I heard that Simon was almost dying when the police arrived, and Rebecca lost their baby. Before Rebecca could be discharged from the hospital, she was arrested by the police for intent to harm anothe

I looked at her coldly. "It's not possible between us anymore, Rebecca. I knew how you were when we got married, and you're not as innocent as you claim. From the first time you chose to believe Simon unconditionally, our relationship ended."Rebecca was taken aback. Just as she was about to say something, I interrupted her, "You still haven't apologized to me about getting pregnant with Simon's baby, even though it wouldn't matter to me. You slandered me while believing all of Simon's words, and you continuously lost your temper at me, yet now, you claim you want to treasure me. Doesn't that sound like a joke to you?" I took a deep breath and told her everything I had bottled up inside of me, "If I hadn't told you the truth, and if Simon hadn't been stupid enough not to cover his tracks, you would have stood up for him by hitting me and making me apologize to him."After all that I had suffered, haven't you even thought about making him experience what I've been through?"Rebecca

I smiled with a cold look in my eye. "I've recently consulted several psychiatrists about your condition, and they told me that your symptoms do not really match depression. Can you truly tell us that your condition is correctly diagnosed?"Simon turned pale before I could finish, and I saw the panic in his eyes, but he still nodded stubbornly because Rebecca was present. "It's true that I was diagnosed with depression, Hayden. I know you've never liked me and always thought I'm faking it, but depression is a mental issue, and not a condition you can physically see. Rebecca has seen how I always have trouble eating and sleeping. I'm fine with you not believing me, but I would never pretend in front of her. Stop judging others with your despicable standards!" He lowered his head after that and started tearing up."I have been taking anti-depression medication that Rebecca bought for me daily. She confirmed the pills with the doctor, and they're legitimate. I have been trying so ha

Rebecca looked upset, as if she had been dealt a great grievance.I looked at her calmly without feeling emotional. "You have never questioned Simon all these years, no matter what happens with him, and you believe him unconditionally. It's because of this bias that your mother has ended up dead, and you're accusing me of being cold?"How can you even question my right to divorce you, Rebecca?"If she wanted the truth, I was willing to give it to her. I took my phone out and ignored Simon, who got increasingly pale, and I emailed Rebecca a clip. It was a video of Simon blocking my way and showing me a pregnancy report delightfully."Rebecca is pregnant with our child now, Hayden. It means nothing for you to keep holding the spot as her husband. Do you know that every time she tells you she's on a business trip, she's really with me? "Rebecca complains about you all the time, and she doesn't love you at all! So what if you refuse to leave her? You're just a pitiful husband she doe

I took my phone out to show them the surveillance footage I got from the hospital with a clear timestamp on it. "This is the time that I brought Mom to the hospital, and a phone record of me calling the ambulance. How can an orphan like Simon, who has no job and requires the help of another to pay for his living, know anything about the hospital's surgery schedule? He has no clearance to do that."As for you, what kind of relationship do you have with him for you to believe his words unconditionally?"Rebecca turned pale. She was about to say something when Simon went back to playing his old tricks by sobbing while covering his face. "It wasn't intentional, Rebecca! I had no idea that the doctor was so unreliable and did not even check Mrs. Chilton's surgery schedule properly. It's my fault for not being thorough about this!"But everyone makes mistakes. How can this be pinned on us? Oh, it hurts so much, I want to die. Please let me die…" Simon tried to slam his head into the w

When I woke up, I was already at the hospital. A nurse was changing my bandage. "Don't move. You hurt your spine, and you need time to recuperate." My mind went blank as all I could think of was how Rebecca pushed me down the stairs. I almost ended up like my mother-in-law.Everything that happened in my past and current lifetime led me to one decision. I had to leave Rebecca! Hence, I contacted my lawyer to prepare our divorce papers.I stayed in the hospital for three days, and I packed my things to return home when my father-in-law was back. On my way home, I bumped into Rebecca and Simon. It looked like she had not been home during this time, and both of them were looking happy while dressed in matching red outfits.Rebecca spotted me and threw a sarcastic look at me. "Have you finally decided to stop your little show because no one is buying it?"Simon looked upset. "I'm begging you, Hayden. Even though Mrs. Chilton is not your mother, you shouldn't play jokes like this. Why
