Chapter 4

Autor: Yesterday's Sun
Hannah's POV

The next morning, the wind died down. The scenic area reopened to visitors, and Andy booked us a sailing trip.

Susie wore a white dress and stood in the hotel lobby, nervously clutching Jacob's sleeve. "The lake's so deep. What if I fall in?"

Jacob crouched down and tightened the buckle on her life jacket. "I'm right here. Why are you scared?"

Andy shoved the camera into my hands. "You just got over a fever. Don't get on the boat with us. Stay here and take pictures of us."

I dropped the camera onto a lobby chair. "No."

Andy's expression turned sour. "It's just taking a couple of shots. What's with you again?"

"I'm not feeling well. I want to go back to my room and rest."

Jacob glanced at me. He didn't ask what was wrong. He just said impatiently, "Whatever."

Susie froze, touching her bare wrist. "Where's my bracelet?"

She dug through her pockets, and her eyes instantly welled up. "That was a graduation gift from Jacob. I had it on me just a minute ago."

Jacob tried to calm her down. "Don't panic. Maybe it's in your room."

Susie shook her head. "I felt it on my wrist on my way down. It's out here somewhere."

Jacob walked back toward the entrance with her to search. Andy whipped out his phone, turned on the light, and got down near the bushes to look.

As Jacob passed me, he said, "Wait for me in the room. Let me find the bracelet first. Then we'll talk about last night."

I watched the three of them walk off into the distance.

Back in my room, I pulled out the suitcase I'd packed the night before. Then I canceled both Jacob and my return tickets and sent Jacob's share of the apartment's deposit back to him.

I lined the matching bracelets and spare key neatly on the table, right next to our open fourth-year anniversary scrapbook.

The scrapbook was full of all the things we'd planned for the future, from starting a business together after graduation and getting married once our careers were stable to visiting a new place every year and seeing every lake in Xavon before we turned 30.

And on the last page was a note 18-year-old Jacob had written to me, "Hannah, whenever you look back, I'll always be there."

I closed the scrapbook and left it there.

Four years of love didn't just disappear because I caught them kissing. It still hurt. I still couldn't let it go. And at night, I'd still think about the promise he'd made when we were 18.

But loving Jacob was a choice I'd made back then.

Leaving him was the dignity I owed myself now.

A car horn sounded downstairs. My ride had arrived. I grabbed my suitcase and walked out of the hotel.

The receptionist ran after me and gave me a cup of hot water. "Drink this on the road. Your fever just barely broke."

Then she glanced behind me. "Your boyfriend is not leaving with you?"

"He's not my boyfriend anymore." Saying it out loud wasn't as hard as I thought it'd be.

The driver loaded my suitcase into the trunk. Just as I was about to get in, Jacob called me. The wind whistled through the phone, mixed with Susie's sniffling. He asked, "Where are you?"

"Hotel entrance."

Jacob exhaled, relieved. "Stay there. Don't go anywhere. We still can't find Susie's bracelet, so I can't leave yet. When I get back, we'll talk this through."

I looked out at Crescent Lake in the distance. Morning light hit the water, glittering like chopped gold foil.

"Jacob, today's the last day I'll wait for you."

There was a brief silence on the other end. His tone finally softened. "Got it. Wait there, okay? Don't threaten me with a breakup."

He still thought I was trying to bend him to my will. And he still believed a quick apology would fix everything, just like it always had.

Susie called out his name, and he immediately said, "Got to go."

He hung up.

I turned my phone off, took out the SIM card, and left it on the bench outside the hotel.

The driver opened the car door for me. I got in, and it closed with a low thud. Soon, we pulled onto the road around Crescent Lake.

Through the rearview mirror, I watched the hotel get smaller and smaller until it disappeared into the morning fog.

I'd already seen the sunset over Crescent Lake. As for the person who'd promised to see the scenery with me, I didn't want him anymore.

  • I Watched Our Future End in the Sunset   Chapter 10

Hannah's POVOn opening day, I stood in front of my work, talking to reporters. On the huge screen, sand blew through the ruins of a thousand-year-old city. Morning light streamed through the cracks in the broken walls, and a restorer bent over, gently brushing the dust off a mural. My documentary was titled "Beyond the Dusk".A reporter asked me, "Why did you choose that title?"I looked at the sky on the screen as it slowly brightened. "Because dusk isn't the end. As long as you keep moving forward, you'll always find a new dawn."After the interview ended, I turned around and saw Jacob standing near the crowd. He had lost a lot of weight over the past year. His usually neat shirt was wrinkled, and the exhaustion in his eyes was evident. He stared at me for a long time before finally speaking, his voice hoarse. "Hannah."I gave him a nod. "Long time no see."His eyes instantly reddened at my distant tone.Jacob hurried over and took the scrapbook out of his bag. "I've kept

Third-Person POVJacob emailed Hannah almost every day for the next six months. At first, he held onto that laughable pride of his."When does your project end?""We'll talk when you get back.""You're still a part of our team."Hannah never replied to him.A month later, the startup completely collapsed. Equipment and rent costs doubled, two projects fell through, investors pulled out, and the partners wanted to leave.Andy blamed everything on Jacob. The two of them had a huge argument at the studio and ended up getting physical. Before storming out, Andy snapped at Jacob, "Why are you acting so devoted now? You told me not to bother with Hannah even when she had a high fever. You're the one who tricked her when we went to Crescent Lake. You said it didn't matter as long as you kept your promise."Now that she doesn't want you anymore, you're finally panicking?"Jacob stood there in the middle of the mess, unable to say a word in his defense.Susie stayed by his side throu

Third-Person POVInstead of attending the graduation dinner that evening, Jacob returned to the studio and read through Hannah's handoff files. From equipment specifications and shoot budgets to business registrations and client pitch decks, traces of Hannah's work were everywhere. She'd come up with the brand name, and she'd edited the promo videos. She was the one who'd secured their first client after seven visits.Even the speech that won Jacob first place in the entrepreneurship competition was something she'd spent two straight nights rewriting for him.Yet on the day Jacob won, he'd said on stage, "This has always been my dream, and I built it from the ground up."The cameras panned to the crowd. Hannah was sitting in the very back row, smiling and clapping for him.Jacob didn't see anything wrong with it back then. He even believed that because she loved him, she should be willing to pave the way for him.Now that she'd handed everything back, it finally hit him that she

Third-Person POVA week later, graduation went ahead as planned. Jacob got there early and sat in the third row. He kept checking the entrance every few minutes.Hannah had told him before that graduation was one of the most important milestones in life. No matter what, she'd show up to take graduation photos. So Jacob was dead sure she'd turn up. He even had the apartment key in his pocket.Jacob had already made up his mind. If Hannah apologized first, he'd give her the key back. As for what happened at Crescent Lake, he was willing to let it go a little too.He just wouldn't be so nice to Susie in front of Hannah anymore. At least, he'd make sure she didn't see it.But the ceremony started, and Hannah's seat remained empty. When the faculty member took attendance, he skipped Hannah's name.Jacob couldn't sit still anymore. "Where's Hannah?"The faculty member looked at him, confused. "She didn't tell you? She's not allowed to leave halfway through the project. She already ap

Third-Person POVThree days later, Jacob returned to campus. He assumed Hannah was already in the dorm, waiting for him.She never stayed mad at him for more than two days. On the third day, she'd usually be the one to reach out first, find some excuse to smooth things over, and pretend nothing had happened. But even after hours passed, his message remained unanswered.Instead, his startup fell apart first. The equipment supplier they had lined up raised their prices. The studio offering free space canceled their slot. Two clients who were literally in the middle of signing contracts halted the deal.Gary showed up at the dorm with the revised quote. "Jacob, what's going on between you and Hannah? It's 30% more for the same exact equipment. We start shooting next week. Where the hell do we get a supplier now?"Jacob was annoyed. "What? Can't run the project without her? Find another supplier."Gary scoffed. "Easy for you to say. These people only gave us those prices because Han

Third-Person POVJacob and the others returned to the hotel at noon. They eventually found Susie's bracelet stuck in a crack in the pavement by the parking lot.Now that Susie had it back, her mood brightened up, and she clung to Jacob's arm the whole way back."I'm so glad you stayed to search for it with me, or I would've freaked out."Jacob wiped the dust off the bracelet for her. He said gently, "Be more careful next time."Andy joked, "It's just a bracelet. If you lose it, Jacob can always buy you another one."They walked into the lobby, joking around. Jacob instinctively glanced over at where Hannah had been standing earlier. The bench was empty. There was only a SIM card that had been blown into a corner by the wind.He stopped in his tracks. "Where's Hannah?"The receptionist looked up. "She already checked out.""When?""Over an hour ago. She left with the man who came to pick her up. She took all her luggage too."Andy laughed. "She really took off? She canceled t
