Chapter 3

Autor: Yesterday's Sun
Strong winds blew across Crescent Lake that night. The road around the lake was closed. Whatever we were supposed to do the next day had to be canceled.

Jacob moved his laptop into the living room. "Since we can't leave, let's figure out what we're doing after graduation."

He opened up his business plan along with the apartment floor plan. "The landlord is bugging me about the lease. Let's sign it when we get back and move in. No more waiting around."

Susie reached over and took the laptop before I could. She started going through the floor plan like she was the one moving in.

"The living room looks plain with all that natural wood. A cream-colored style would look better in photos. And this second bedroom gets the best light. We should use it for livestreaming."

Jacob nodded. "Sure, change it however you like."

I looked at Susie. "That's the apartment Jacob and I rented. Why should we decorate it based on what you like?"

Susie seemed to realize she'd said too much and quickly explained, "Hannah, don't get the wrong idea. I just graduated and haven't found a place to stay. Jacob said the apartment has three bedrooms, so he said I could stay with you guys for a while."

Jacob was unfazed. "It isn't safe for her to live alone. We have empty rooms anyway. Why not just let her stay with us for a while?"

He said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world. It was as if I were the outsider here.

I closed the laptop. "No."

Jacob clearly wasn't expecting that.

I'd rarely said no to him during our four-year relationship. When he wanted to start a business, I gave up the job I wanted and helped him put the team together. When Andy needed equipment, I lent him my spare camera. When Susie wanted to join a project, I rewrote her résumé three times.

They were used to me saying yes. When I finally said no, they acted like I was the problem.

Andy frowned. "We've been friends for so long. She's only staying for a few months. Do you have to be so petty?"

Susie stood up, clearly upset. "It's okay. I'll find a place of my own. Don't let this affect your relationship."

That was what she said, but her eyes were glued to the second bedroom, the brightest room in the place.

Jacob touched her shoulder. "You don't need to leave."

He stared at me coldly. "You're not the only one paying rent. Why should it be up to you to decide whether she can stay?"

I didn't answer him.

Noticing the tension between us, Andy pulled out his phone. "Let's look at the video of the place first. You can figure out the living arrangements once you actually move in."

He connected the phone to the TV and pulled up the video they'd taken when they viewed the apartment.

The camera moved from the entryway into the living room. The couch hadn't arrived yet, but there were already a few pairs of slippers on the floor.

The camera panned past the master bedroom. I saw Susie sitting cross-legged on the window seat, eating cake. She had Jacob's white shirt on, her hair was wet, and two wine glasses were sitting on the coffee table.

Jacob came out of the bathroom with a blow-dryer and started drying Susie's hair.

The video was only a few seconds long, but all of us went silent. Andy hurried to stop the screen share, and Jacob snatched the phone away.

"We were just there to check the water and electricity."

Susie's face went pale. She quickly explained. "It suddenly started raining outside, and my clothes were soaked. So I wore Jacob's shirt. Hannah, there's nothing going on between us. Don't overthink it."

I stared at the paused video. Susie sat on the window seat while Jacob stood behind her, drying her hair. They looked so at ease together, like they'd been living there for ages.

I'd searched half of the city to find that apartment. From the location and natural light to the kitchen and balcony, every part of it held something I'd imagined for our future.

I hadn't even moved in yet, and they'd already drunk there, showered there, and even worn each other's clothes.

Honestly, I didn't even want to know what happened that night.

I pulled out my phone and called the real estate agent, Agatha Litt. "Agatha, I don't want to rent that apartment anymore."

Jacob reached for my phone. "Hannah, enough!"

I pulled my hand back. "I signed the lease and paid the deposit. Why do I need your permission to walk away?"

His face hardened. "You're going to mess up all our plans after graduation over this? You're taking this jealousy thing way too far."

Susie lowered her head, tears falling onto the back of her hand.

Andy immediately handed her a tissue. "Hannah, Susie already explained everything. What else do you want?"

I looked at the three people I'd known for ten years.

I used to think we were close enough that we could share everything. They could use my connections, take my equipment, and even take up my time and energy.

But I never thought they'd treat my boyfriend like a shared resource too.

I left our group chat and withdrew everything I'd brought to the project, from filming locations and equipment suppliers to the clients I'd secured.

Jacob's phone kept buzzing. He looked at the notifications, and his expression finally shifted. "You're risking your future just to spite me? Forget the apartment. Get our partnerships back first."

I looked at him. "That's your future, not mine."

My phone lit up with a message from Scott.

"The project team can pick you up a day early. Send us your location before tomorrow morning."

I signed my name on the contract and sent them the hotel address.

Jacob was still pestering me to reinstate the lease and secure the partnerships again.

I asked him one last question. "If Susie and I both needed you at the same time, who would you choose?"

He rubbed his brow impatiently. "She has asthma, and she's not in good health. Why do you have to compare yourself to her?"

I nodded and didn't ask anything else. He'd already given me my answer.

  • I Watched Our Future End in the Sunset   Chapter 10

Hannah's POVOn opening day, I stood in front of my work, talking to reporters. On the huge screen, sand blew through the ruins of a thousand-year-old city. Morning light streamed through the cracks in the broken walls, and a restorer bent over, gently brushing the dust off a mural. My documentary was titled "Beyond the Dusk".A reporter asked me, "Why did you choose that title?"I looked at the sky on the screen as it slowly brightened. "Because dusk isn't the end. As long as you keep moving forward, you'll always find a new dawn."After the interview ended, I turned around and saw Jacob standing near the crowd. He had lost a lot of weight over the past year. His usually neat shirt was wrinkled, and the exhaustion in his eyes was evident. He stared at me for a long time before finally speaking, his voice hoarse. "Hannah."I gave him a nod. "Long time no see."His eyes instantly reddened at my distant tone.Jacob hurried over and took the scrapbook out of his bag. "I've kept

Third-Person POVJacob emailed Hannah almost every day for the next six months. At first, he held onto that laughable pride of his."When does your project end?""We'll talk when you get back.""You're still a part of our team."Hannah never replied to him.A month later, the startup completely collapsed. Equipment and rent costs doubled, two projects fell through, investors pulled out, and the partners wanted to leave.Andy blamed everything on Jacob. The two of them had a huge argument at the studio and ended up getting physical. Before storming out, Andy snapped at Jacob, "Why are you acting so devoted now? You told me not to bother with Hannah even when she had a high fever. You're the one who tricked her when we went to Crescent Lake. You said it didn't matter as long as you kept your promise."Now that she doesn't want you anymore, you're finally panicking?"Jacob stood there in the middle of the mess, unable to say a word in his defense.Susie stayed by his side throu

Third-Person POVInstead of attending the graduation dinner that evening, Jacob returned to the studio and read through Hannah's handoff files. From equipment specifications and shoot budgets to business registrations and client pitch decks, traces of Hannah's work were everywhere. She'd come up with the brand name, and she'd edited the promo videos. She was the one who'd secured their first client after seven visits.Even the speech that won Jacob first place in the entrepreneurship competition was something she'd spent two straight nights rewriting for him.Yet on the day Jacob won, he'd said on stage, "This has always been my dream, and I built it from the ground up."The cameras panned to the crowd. Hannah was sitting in the very back row, smiling and clapping for him.Jacob didn't see anything wrong with it back then. He even believed that because she loved him, she should be willing to pave the way for him.Now that she'd handed everything back, it finally hit him that she

Third-Person POVA week later, graduation went ahead as planned. Jacob got there early and sat in the third row. He kept checking the entrance every few minutes.Hannah had told him before that graduation was one of the most important milestones in life. No matter what, she'd show up to take graduation photos. So Jacob was dead sure she'd turn up. He even had the apartment key in his pocket.Jacob had already made up his mind. If Hannah apologized first, he'd give her the key back. As for what happened at Crescent Lake, he was willing to let it go a little too.He just wouldn't be so nice to Susie in front of Hannah anymore. At least, he'd make sure she didn't see it.But the ceremony started, and Hannah's seat remained empty. When the faculty member took attendance, he skipped Hannah's name.Jacob couldn't sit still anymore. "Where's Hannah?"The faculty member looked at him, confused. "She didn't tell you? She's not allowed to leave halfway through the project. She already ap

Third-Person POVThree days later, Jacob returned to campus. He assumed Hannah was already in the dorm, waiting for him.She never stayed mad at him for more than two days. On the third day, she'd usually be the one to reach out first, find some excuse to smooth things over, and pretend nothing had happened. But even after hours passed, his message remained unanswered.Instead, his startup fell apart first. The equipment supplier they had lined up raised their prices. The studio offering free space canceled their slot. Two clients who were literally in the middle of signing contracts halted the deal.Gary showed up at the dorm with the revised quote. "Jacob, what's going on between you and Hannah? It's 30% more for the same exact equipment. We start shooting next week. Where the hell do we get a supplier now?"Jacob was annoyed. "What? Can't run the project without her? Find another supplier."Gary scoffed. "Easy for you to say. These people only gave us those prices because Han

Third-Person POVJacob and the others returned to the hotel at noon. They eventually found Susie's bracelet stuck in a crack in the pavement by the parking lot.Now that Susie had it back, her mood brightened up, and she clung to Jacob's arm the whole way back."I'm so glad you stayed to search for it with me, or I would've freaked out."Jacob wiped the dust off the bracelet for her. He said gently, "Be more careful next time."Andy joked, "It's just a bracelet. If you lose it, Jacob can always buy you another one."They walked into the lobby, joking around. Jacob instinctively glanced over at where Hannah had been standing earlier. The bench was empty. There was only a SIM card that had been blown into a corner by the wind.He stopped in his tracks. "Where's Hannah?"The receptionist looked up. "She already checked out.""When?""Over an hour ago. She left with the man who came to pick her up. She took all her luggage too."Andy laughed. "She really took off? She canceled t
