Chapter 4

Author: Wrenwood
Cora spent seven days in police custody.

Those seven days were a living nightmare. After the other detainees heard she was a homewrecker, they either mocked her mercilessly or beat her up.

No matter how many times she tried to explain herself, no one would believe her.

Eventually, she grew accustomed to the pain.

When she was finally released, she looked at the empty road outside the police station and let out a bitter, mocking laugh.

Of course. Ethan was a man with endless business to attend to. How could he possibly spare any time for her?

She wandered down the street.

Suddenly, she noticed the enormous screens mounted on the high-rises lining both sides of the road. They were broadcasting an interview with Ethan and Madison. Standing shoulder to shoulder, the two looked every bit like a loving married couple.

They were so perfectly matched, so dazzling in the spotlight.

Cora stood there for a long time, until the voices of passersby suddenly reached her ears.

“Isn’t that the mistress from that video?”

“I heard she caused a scene and got herself locked up for seven days. How does she have the nerve to show her face in public? I’d be too ashamed to leave the house!”

Someone suddenly shouted, “Mistress, go die!”

The cry spread, and people began hurling rotten eggs at Cora in a frenzy.

Shame, anguish, and humiliation surged through her all at once.

In her twenty-five years of life, Cora had never been treated like a rat crawling through a sewer, someone everyone wanted to chase away and beat to death. Unable to stop the barrage of abuse, she fled in a miserable panic without even trying to defend herself.

Only after reaching a deserted stretch of road did she spot a familiar Maybach in the distance.

It was Ethan’s car.

Cora froze, a sudden wave of humiliation washing over her. She didn’t even need to look down to know how wretched she must appear.

Sticky residue from countless rotten eggs clung to her clothes and body, filling the air around her with a foul stench.

Meanwhile, Ethan remained impeccably dressed in his tailored suit, his natural air of nobility undiminished.

They no longer belonged in the same world.

She had simply taken until today to realize it.

Numbly, Cora opened the car door and sat beside him.

Ethan rubbed his temples and made an effort to soften his voice.

“Cora, work has been hectic lately. I’m sorry you’ve had to endure all this.

“Madison has been spoiled since childhood, so she doesn’t always think things through. And given your reputation right now, it’s probably best if you stay home for a while.”

Cora lowered her head and gave a self-mocking smile.

“Don’t worry. I know my place.”

She had become someone everyone wanted to hunt down and humiliate, while the man she’d loved for more than a decade cared only about protecting his own interests. He couldn’t even bring himself to step out of the car and shield her from the storm.

Why bother going outside just to invite more humiliation?

The two rode back to the mansion in silence.

But when Cora finished showering and went to her room to change, she discovered that it had been completely trashed.

Her jewelry and clothes had been thrown onto the floor, trampled under countless footprints.

Worst of all, someone had dragged out the large box she’d hidden beneath her bed and rummaged through it.

All the precious memories she had collected with Ethan—the love letters she’d written by hand, the protective charm she’d begged and pleaded to obtain, the fountain pen he’d given her, his handwritten letters...

Every last one had been reduced to scraps.

Madison must have done this. She wanted to humiliate Cora in the cruelest way possible.

When Ethan hurried over and saw the wreckage, he paused, a fleeting trace of pain passing through his eyes. But it vanished almost immediately.

He became the same calculating, rational Ethan Caldwell once again.

“Cora, we can replace those things.

“Once I’ve gained complete control of Caldwell Group, I’ll make it up to you a hundredfold, even a thousandfold.”

Cora closed her eyes briefly.

“There’s no need.”

She had already planned to throw those things away herself. Their love was gone, so what was the point of holding on to reminders of it?

Now she wouldn’t even have to go through the trouble herself.

Some things, once broken, could never be made whole again.

Cora and Alexander’s wedding day arrived before long. They held their ceremony at the largest castle in Westbridge, and the media would later call it the wedding of the century. The Lawson family offered little resistance to their marriage. In fact, they felt deeply sorry for everything Cora had endured. When they learned that she was the very girl who had saved their son’s life when he was a child, they were even more delighted with her.On the wedding day, Cora wore a pristine white gown and walked toward Alexander one step at a time, her heart overflowing with happiness. At the very back of the crowd, Ethan stood hidden among the guests. He gazed longingly at the woman in her wedding dress. Suddenly, he remembered when they had registered their marriage years ago. Back then, all they had was a marriage certificate. They hadn’t even had a wedding dress.Cora had suffered for so many years. Now, at last, she had finally come through the darkness and found her happiness.Ethan f

When the video of Cora’s victory made its way back home, Ethan was drowning his sorrows at a bar.Madison arrived with several people in tow and sneered at him.“Why aren’t you trying to get your shares back? What kind of life is this—getting wasted here every day? Grandpa is already thinking about giving up on you and grooming a new heir!”Ethan remained unmoved. He had given up on recovering the shares. It was obvious that Alexander had no intention of negotiating with him. Even if Ethan went to see him, all he would accomplish was humiliating himself. What was the point? He had spent a long time reflecting on his life. From the moment he had reunited with his biological family, his ultimate goal had been to give Cora a better life. But now that she was gone, did any of his efforts still mean anything?Ethan no longer knew.He was simply exhausted.Watching him sink deeper into despair made Madison grit her teeth in frustration. Ever since her face had been disfigured, no on

The competition arrived right on schedule. As a contestant, Cora advanced through round after round. But when she finally reached the finals, she realized just how formidable her competitors were. Most of them were prodigies from around the world. Some had graduated from prestigious music schools, while others came from families with generations of piano virtuosos.Compared to them, she felt incredibly small.Alexander couldn’t help reassuring her.“Whatever the final result, at least you gave it everything you had. To me, you’ll always be the champion.”He had even commissioned a trophy especially for her.It was a replica of the official trophy, down to the smallest detail. Even if both trophies were displayed side by side onstage, the organizers probably wouldn’t be able to tell them apart.Cora didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at his gesture. She had entered the competition to fulfill her dream, not to take home a trophy. Still, knowing how much thought Alexander had pu

Ethan’s mind went completely blank. He had never imagined that Cora and Alexander would end up together.Suddenly, many of the things he hadn’t been able to figure out began to make sense. He stared dazedly at their intertwined hands, unable to name the emotions churning inside him. Regret? Heartbreak? Perhaps both.“When did you two get together?”Cora answered coldly, “I suppose I have you to thank for that, Mr. Caldwell. If you hadn’t treated me the way you did, I might never have realized that there was someone in this world who had been quietly looking out for me all along.”Ethan staggered backward a few steps, his expression growing even grimmer. He abruptly closed his eyes, as though making a decision. Then he stepped forward and grabbed Cora roughly by the wrist.“Cory, I’m willing to put everything that happened in the past behind us.“Alexander isn’t as wonderful as you think. He’s only getting close to you because he wants those shares. You’re too trusting, and he’

The next morning, as Cora stepped outside, she noticed a Maybach parked near the entrance. She froze for a moment, an uneasy suspicion forming in her mind. Could it be Ethan Caldwell? Her first instinct was to run. But then she remembered that this was Alexander’s territory. They were also overseas, far from Ethan’s usual sphere of influence. No matter how powerful Ethan was, he couldn’t simply do as he pleased on someone else’s turf. With that thought, Cora steadied herself and stood her ground.Sure enough, a moment later, a man stepped out of the car.Ethan looked far more worn out than before, his former confidence and arrogance nowhere to be seen.“Cora, have you been doing okay?”He parted his lips, his voice strained. He should have hated her. Yet whenever he tried to hold on to that hatred, memories of their happier days together inevitably came flooding back. The irony was almost laughable. When she had been by his side, he hadn’t known how to cherish her. Now that

Alexander could hardly believe his ears. What had he just heard?“Cory, could you say that again? I think I just heard you say you’re willing to give us a chance.”The usually composed and mature man suddenly sounded like a child. He stumbled over his words, fumbling for a response. For once, he seemed completely at a loss.Cora felt even more certain of her decision. A radiant smile spread across her face.“I said, why don’t we give this a try?”Alexander was overwhelmed with excitement. Wasn’t this the very thing he’d been waiting so long to hear? And now, he’d finally heard it!“Cory, I promise I won’t let you down.“I understand why you’re being cautious, so give me three months. If you still haven’t fallen completely in love with me by then, we can go our separate ways, okay?”He didn’t want to hold back the woman he loved. But he also wanted to give himself a chance. Cora had finally agreed to consider a relationship with him, and he knew he might not get another oppo
