Chapter 5

Author: Wrenwood
Ethan didn’t come home for several days.

Cora could only catch glimpses of him through Madison’s social media posts.

The first post was a collage of nine photos. Madison was beaming in every one of them as she attended a charity gala with Ethan. She wore a fortune’s worth of jewelry he had acquired for her at a high-stakes charity auction, and the two were dressed in matching outfits.

The caption read:

“Only I deserve to stand by your side.”

The second post featured several photos of the back of someone’s injured hand.

Cora recognized it immediately. It was Ethan’s hand.

The caption read:

“Is this what true love feels like? He said he’d risk his life for me. I’ve never been happier.”

After that came a steady stream of videos showing Ethan and Madison attending interviews together and flaunting their relationship in public.

Cora watched them with cold detachment, until a memory suddenly came back to her.

There had been a time when Ethan truly would have given up his life for her.

Back then, their love had been pure. Two young lovers had held each other beneath the stars and promised to stay together for the rest of their lives.

“I’ll make sure Cora has a good life!”

When had that vow turned into something so hollow?

Ding!

Madison was calling.

She had clearly called just to provoke Cora.

“You’ve seen my posts, haven’t you? Ethan loves me. Everything he once did for you, he can do for me now.”

Cora suddenly laughed, her voice laced with pity.

“He never loved you. He’s in love with power and status.”

Unfortunately, she had only figured that out herself today.

Madison’s breathing grew noticeably heavier on the other end. Anger crept into her voice as she let out a cold laugh.

“That’s just jealousy talking. Just you wait!”

She hung up in a fit of rage.

Cora tugged at the corner of her mouth, hiding the scorn in her eyes.

That evening, Ethan suddenly returned home, his expression cold.

His face was dark, as though he were struggling to contain his anger. The moment he stepped inside, he turned to Cora.

“Cora, was it you who leaked the news about our marriage certificate?”

His voice was tense, but he was still trying to keep his composure.

Cora froze, unable to understand what he meant for a moment.

Then he shoved a phone into her hand.

A trending news story filled the screen. Its headline was displayed in bold red letters:

“Caldwell Heir Rumored to Be Married—What Will Become of the Caldwell-Parker Alliance?”

Below it was a clear image of their marriage certificate, with Cora’s name listed as his spouse.

Cora’s pupils contracted. She looked up at him sharply.

“You suspect me?”

“It’s not just suspicion.” Ethan rubbed his temples. “It’s just too much of a coincidence. Madison had you taken to the police station, and now, not long after your release, this comes out...”

“So what?” Cora’s voice trembled. “You think I did it?”

Ethan fell silent for a moment before turning his face away.

“Cora, you’re being unreasonable.”

He hadn’t accused her outright, but she could hear the reproach in his voice.

He had already decided she was the one who leaked the news.

Cora stared at him, her heart bleeding with every beat.

Then she remembered Madison’s phone call earlier that day, especially the threat in her voice. Suddenly, the truth became clear.

“No. Madison did this!

“She called me earlier today. She—”

Cora stumbled over her words as she tried to explain, oblivious to the disappointment growing in Ethan’s eyes.

Finally, Ethan lost all patience. He seized her wrist, gripping it so tightly that it felt as though he might crush her bones.

“Enough, Cora Mitchell! Are you really going to keep pretending you don’t know what you’re doing?

“When did you become so unreasonable? You’ve had that marriage certificate ever since we registered our marriage. Who else could have leaked it besides you?

“Besides, what would Madison gain by sabotaging the alliance? She’s not as stupid as you are!”

With that, he violently flung her away.

Bam!

Cora staggered backward, her lower back slamming into the edge of a table. Agonizing pain tore through her, but Ethan acted as though he hadn’t even noticed.

He strode toward the door without looking back.

He left with such cold finality, as though he had already decided she was both foolish and malicious.

Cora could no longer hold back. She broke down and sobbed.

Cora and Alexander’s wedding day arrived before long. They held their ceremony at the largest castle in Westbridge, and the media would later call it the wedding of the century. The Lawson family offered little resistance to their marriage. In fact, they felt deeply sorry for everything Cora had endured. When they learned that she was the very girl who had saved their son’s life when he was a child, they were even more delighted with her.On the wedding day, Cora wore a pristine white gown and walked toward Alexander one step at a time, her heart overflowing with happiness. At the very back of the crowd, Ethan stood hidden among the guests. He gazed longingly at the woman in her wedding dress. Suddenly, he remembered when they had registered their marriage years ago. Back then, all they had was a marriage certificate. They hadn’t even had a wedding dress.Cora had suffered for so many years. Now, at last, she had finally come through the darkness and found her happiness.Ethan f

When the video of Cora’s victory made its way back home, Ethan was drowning his sorrows at a bar.Madison arrived with several people in tow and sneered at him.“Why aren’t you trying to get your shares back? What kind of life is this—getting wasted here every day? Grandpa is already thinking about giving up on you and grooming a new heir!”Ethan remained unmoved. He had given up on recovering the shares. It was obvious that Alexander had no intention of negotiating with him. Even if Ethan went to see him, all he would accomplish was humiliating himself. What was the point? He had spent a long time reflecting on his life. From the moment he had reunited with his biological family, his ultimate goal had been to give Cora a better life. But now that she was gone, did any of his efforts still mean anything?Ethan no longer knew.He was simply exhausted.Watching him sink deeper into despair made Madison grit her teeth in frustration. Ever since her face had been disfigured, no on

The competition arrived right on schedule. As a contestant, Cora advanced through round after round. But when she finally reached the finals, she realized just how formidable her competitors were. Most of them were prodigies from around the world. Some had graduated from prestigious music schools, while others came from families with generations of piano virtuosos.Compared to them, she felt incredibly small.Alexander couldn’t help reassuring her.“Whatever the final result, at least you gave it everything you had. To me, you’ll always be the champion.”He had even commissioned a trophy especially for her.It was a replica of the official trophy, down to the smallest detail. Even if both trophies were displayed side by side onstage, the organizers probably wouldn’t be able to tell them apart.Cora didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at his gesture. She had entered the competition to fulfill her dream, not to take home a trophy. Still, knowing how much thought Alexander had pu

Ethan’s mind went completely blank. He had never imagined that Cora and Alexander would end up together.Suddenly, many of the things he hadn’t been able to figure out began to make sense. He stared dazedly at their intertwined hands, unable to name the emotions churning inside him. Regret? Heartbreak? Perhaps both.“When did you two get together?”Cora answered coldly, “I suppose I have you to thank for that, Mr. Caldwell. If you hadn’t treated me the way you did, I might never have realized that there was someone in this world who had been quietly looking out for me all along.”Ethan staggered backward a few steps, his expression growing even grimmer. He abruptly closed his eyes, as though making a decision. Then he stepped forward and grabbed Cora roughly by the wrist.“Cory, I’m willing to put everything that happened in the past behind us.“Alexander isn’t as wonderful as you think. He’s only getting close to you because he wants those shares. You’re too trusting, and he’

The next morning, as Cora stepped outside, she noticed a Maybach parked near the entrance. She froze for a moment, an uneasy suspicion forming in her mind. Could it be Ethan Caldwell? Her first instinct was to run. But then she remembered that this was Alexander’s territory. They were also overseas, far from Ethan’s usual sphere of influence. No matter how powerful Ethan was, he couldn’t simply do as he pleased on someone else’s turf. With that thought, Cora steadied herself and stood her ground.Sure enough, a moment later, a man stepped out of the car.Ethan looked far more worn out than before, his former confidence and arrogance nowhere to be seen.“Cora, have you been doing okay?”He parted his lips, his voice strained. He should have hated her. Yet whenever he tried to hold on to that hatred, memories of their happier days together inevitably came flooding back. The irony was almost laughable. When she had been by his side, he hadn’t known how to cherish her. Now that

Alexander could hardly believe his ears. What had he just heard?“Cory, could you say that again? I think I just heard you say you’re willing to give us a chance.”The usually composed and mature man suddenly sounded like a child. He stumbled over his words, fumbling for a response. For once, he seemed completely at a loss.Cora felt even more certain of her decision. A radiant smile spread across her face.“I said, why don’t we give this a try?”Alexander was overwhelmed with excitement. Wasn’t this the very thing he’d been waiting so long to hear? And now, he’d finally heard it!“Cory, I promise I won’t let you down.“I understand why you’re being cautious, so give me three months. If you still haven’t fallen completely in love with me by then, we can go our separate ways, okay?”He didn’t want to hold back the woman he loved. But he also wanted to give himself a chance. Cora had finally agreed to consider a relationship with him, and he knew he might not get another oppo
