Chapter 6

Author: Wrenwood
Cora had no idea how long she had been crying before she finally managed to get back on her feet.

She had struck her forehead against the corner of the table, too. Blood trickled down her temple, warm and sticky, but she barely felt the pain.

Compared with the agony in her heart, what did a little physical pain matter?

Numbly, she cleaned up the mess on the floor and wrapped her wound with gauze. Then she headed to the hospital.

But the moment she stepped outside, someone grabbed her from behind and clamped a hand over her mouth.

Cora struggled desperately, but she couldn’t fight off the effects of the anesthetic. Gradually, her consciousness faded.

When she woke again, she found herself in an abandoned warehouse.

Madison stood before her, smiling brightly, triumph written all over her face.

“Well? Do you like the little surprise I prepared for you?”

Cora gritted her teeth, anger surging through her.

“So it really was you! You deliberately leaked the news to make Ethan misunderstand me, just so you could prove that you’re the woman he loves most!”

Madison raised an eyebrow and shook her head leisurely.

“Yes and no. I did it to make you understand your place. Don’t even think about competing with me for Ethan Caldwell.

“Your place in Ethan’s heart is nowhere near as important as mine.

“Otherwise, why would the Caldwell family agree to hand you over to me just because I asked?”

The words struck Cora like a thunderclap, leaving her mind completely blank.

She had never imagined that the Caldwell family had actually permitted Madison to kidnap her.

“No! That’s impossible!”

Desperately, Cora fumbled for her phone, determined to call Ethan and confirm the truth herself.

Madison watched with open mockery. Even when she saw Cora reach for her phone, she made no move to stop her. Instead, she calmly waited for the call to connect.

Sure enough, Ethan answered.

His voice sounded exhausted.

“Cora, stop making a scene.

“Do you have any idea how much damage your recklessness has caused the company? It took a tremendous amount of effort to suppress the news.”

“Ethan!” Cora interrupted him, tears streaming down her face. “I’m in Madison’s hands…”

Ethan fell silent for a moment before replying in a low voice.

“The Parker family agreed to preserve the marriage alliance on one condition: that you be taught some manners.

“Madison may be willful, but she’s not a bad person at heart.

“You did something wrong this time, so you deserve a little punishment. Just behave and accept it. I’ll come get you when this is all over.”

The call ended without hesitation.

Cora refused to believe it. She called again and again, but Ethan never answered.

The contempt on Madison’s face pierced Cora’s heart like a blade.

At last, she understood. When it came to absolute power and self-interest, love meant nothing.

The boy who had once sworn to protect her for the rest of his life was gone. All that remained was a shrewd businessman.

After savoring the despair on Cora’s face for long enough, Madison curled her lips into a smile.

“Good. Have you finally given up hope? Now, ruin her face!”

At her command, four or five bodyguards rushed forward and surrounded Cora.

A sharp blade slashed mercilessly across her face, unleashing pain so intense it felt as though her soul were being torn apart.

She trembled from the agony, yet she refused to make a sound.

She would remember this pain. She would remember this despair.

If Ethan had chosen to abandon their past, then he could not blame her for becoming ruthless. This time, she would make every one of them pay.

Cora had no idea how long the torture lasted.

By the end, her face had been mutilated beyond recognition. The pain was so unbearable that her heart had long since gone numb.

She fixed her gaze on Madison and spoke each word with deliberate clarity.

“You’ll pay for what you’ve done to me. I’ll make sure of it myself!”

Cora and Alexander’s wedding day arrived before long. They held their ceremony at the largest castle in Westbridge, and the media would later call it the wedding of the century. The Lawson family offered little resistance to their marriage. In fact, they felt deeply sorry for everything Cora had endured. When they learned that she was the very girl who had saved their son’s life when he was a child, they were even more delighted with her.On the wedding day, Cora wore a pristine white gown and walked toward Alexander one step at a time, her heart overflowing with happiness. At the very back of the crowd, Ethan stood hidden among the guests. He gazed longingly at the woman in her wedding dress. Suddenly, he remembered when they had registered their marriage years ago. Back then, all they had was a marriage certificate. They hadn’t even had a wedding dress.Cora had suffered for so many years. Now, at last, she had finally come through the darkness and found her happiness.Ethan f

When the video of Cora’s victory made its way back home, Ethan was drowning his sorrows at a bar.Madison arrived with several people in tow and sneered at him.“Why aren’t you trying to get your shares back? What kind of life is this—getting wasted here every day? Grandpa is already thinking about giving up on you and grooming a new heir!”Ethan remained unmoved. He had given up on recovering the shares. It was obvious that Alexander had no intention of negotiating with him. Even if Ethan went to see him, all he would accomplish was humiliating himself. What was the point? He had spent a long time reflecting on his life. From the moment he had reunited with his biological family, his ultimate goal had been to give Cora a better life. But now that she was gone, did any of his efforts still mean anything?Ethan no longer knew.He was simply exhausted.Watching him sink deeper into despair made Madison grit her teeth in frustration. Ever since her face had been disfigured, no on

The competition arrived right on schedule. As a contestant, Cora advanced through round after round. But when she finally reached the finals, she realized just how formidable her competitors were. Most of them were prodigies from around the world. Some had graduated from prestigious music schools, while others came from families with generations of piano virtuosos.Compared to them, she felt incredibly small.Alexander couldn’t help reassuring her.“Whatever the final result, at least you gave it everything you had. To me, you’ll always be the champion.”He had even commissioned a trophy especially for her.It was a replica of the official trophy, down to the smallest detail. Even if both trophies were displayed side by side onstage, the organizers probably wouldn’t be able to tell them apart.Cora didn’t know whether to laugh or cry at his gesture. She had entered the competition to fulfill her dream, not to take home a trophy. Still, knowing how much thought Alexander had pu

Ethan’s mind went completely blank. He had never imagined that Cora and Alexander would end up together.Suddenly, many of the things he hadn’t been able to figure out began to make sense. He stared dazedly at their intertwined hands, unable to name the emotions churning inside him. Regret? Heartbreak? Perhaps both.“When did you two get together?”Cora answered coldly, “I suppose I have you to thank for that, Mr. Caldwell. If you hadn’t treated me the way you did, I might never have realized that there was someone in this world who had been quietly looking out for me all along.”Ethan staggered backward a few steps, his expression growing even grimmer. He abruptly closed his eyes, as though making a decision. Then he stepped forward and grabbed Cora roughly by the wrist.“Cory, I’m willing to put everything that happened in the past behind us.“Alexander isn’t as wonderful as you think. He’s only getting close to you because he wants those shares. You’re too trusting, and he’

The next morning, as Cora stepped outside, she noticed a Maybach parked near the entrance. She froze for a moment, an uneasy suspicion forming in her mind. Could it be Ethan Caldwell? Her first instinct was to run. But then she remembered that this was Alexander’s territory. They were also overseas, far from Ethan’s usual sphere of influence. No matter how powerful Ethan was, he couldn’t simply do as he pleased on someone else’s turf. With that thought, Cora steadied herself and stood her ground.Sure enough, a moment later, a man stepped out of the car.Ethan looked far more worn out than before, his former confidence and arrogance nowhere to be seen.“Cora, have you been doing okay?”He parted his lips, his voice strained. He should have hated her. Yet whenever he tried to hold on to that hatred, memories of their happier days together inevitably came flooding back. The irony was almost laughable. When she had been by his side, he hadn’t known how to cherish her. Now that

Alexander could hardly believe his ears. What had he just heard?“Cory, could you say that again? I think I just heard you say you’re willing to give us a chance.”The usually composed and mature man suddenly sounded like a child. He stumbled over his words, fumbling for a response. For once, he seemed completely at a loss.Cora felt even more certain of her decision. A radiant smile spread across her face.“I said, why don’t we give this a try?”Alexander was overwhelmed with excitement. Wasn’t this the very thing he’d been waiting so long to hear? And now, he’d finally heard it!“Cory, I promise I won’t let you down.“I understand why you’re being cautious, so give me three months. If you still haven’t fallen completely in love with me by then, we can go our separate ways, okay?”He didn’t want to hold back the woman he loved. But he also wanted to give himself a chance. Cora had finally agreed to consider a relationship with him, and he knew he might not get another oppo
