Chapter 1

ผู้เขียน: Mimi Winterrest
The icy mountain wind cut across my face like a blade, carrying the damp chill of the forest.

I couldn't take my eyes off the man standing before me—the one claiming to be me, twenty years in the future.

He looked ancient.

Hideous.

His face, buried beneath wrinkles and scars, looked as though it had been ripped apart and crudely stitched back together.

And yet...

The moment his clouded, despair-filled eyes met mine, something deep inside my soul trembled.

"W-What are you talking about?" My throat tightened, and my voice shook uncontrollably. "Nicole... how could she possibly..."

"How could she not?" he snapped. His rough, calloused hand clamped around my wrist with astonishing strength, the coarse skin scraping painfully against mine.

Without waiting for another word, he dragged me deeper into the woods, deliberately avoiding the routes where the search party was most likely to look.

As we stumbled over rocks and uneven ground, his raspy voice echoed through the trees like something crawling out of a nightmare.

Step by step...

He tore open the next twenty years of my future.

Every word felt soaked in blood.

"You were supposed to call Nicole for help. She would've found you by sunset.

"But not long after that, a violent storm would hit. A landslide would trap the two of you inside a cave halfway up the mountain.

"You'd be stuck there for three days."

He paused for only a heartbeat before continuing.

"During those three days, Jason Carter—who came to the city with you—would get drunk alone at a bar. He'd run into a gang of thugs.

"They'd drag him into an alley, strip him, assault him, record everything...

"And afterward, he'd jump off a building."

The moment I heard Jason's name, I froze.

My stomach lurched violently.

He was my stepbrother.

The son of the woman who had stolen everything from me... the woman who had driven my mother to death.

Back in high school, he'd cornered me in the restroom with his friends and humiliated me for fun.

After I left for college in Ashton City, I'd never seen him again.

I'd thought he was gone from my life forever.

"If he died..." I swallowed hard. "Why would Nicole blame me? What does that have to do with us?"

The older me stopped walking and looked back at me.

"Because on the night he was assaulted, he called Nicole.

"Twenty-seven times.

"But you and Nicole were trapped inside that cave. There wasn't any cell service."

He studied my stunned expression for a moment.

Then something seemed to occur to him.

The light in his eyes dimmed, and a bitter smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.

"Right, you don't know yet. They started sleeping together during your sophomore year.

"The truth is...

"Nicole has always been involved with the man who destroyed the first half of your life."

The words hit me like a punch to the gut.

I thought I was going to throw up.

"No, that's impossible… I would never… I could never do something like that!" Nicole clutched her head with both hands and stumbled backward in terror. All of a sudden, she looked up. For a single instant, something seemed to click. She understood. A smile spread across her face. Then she began to sob.She laughed. She cried. The two sounds tangled together until they became one. With a heart-wrenching scream, she threw down the phone. Then she started slapping herself over and over again, relentlessly. Finally, she collapsed into the corner of the room, curling into a ball. She rocked back and forth, laughing one moment and crying the next.Through it all, she kept mumbling my name. The prison guards rushed in and restrained her.A few days later, I received the news.Nicole had been diagnosed with severe schizophrenia. She was transferred under court order to the state's highest-security psychiatric hospital in Ashton City. There, she would spend the rest of her life trapped between

The wedding had become a complete disaster. The police arrived soon afterward. Not only had I exposed Nicole's affair, I'd also reported her for stealing $1 million from me.After all, most of that money had been earned through my own work. The account was in my name. With millions of people watching the livestream, Nicole, still dressed in her pristine white wedding gown, had a pair of cold steel handcuffs locked around her wrists. As the officers led her away, her eyes were empty.I don't know what she was thinking. But for a fleeting moment, I saw the seventeen-year-old girl she'd once been. This time, I didn't walk toward her.The evidence against Nicole was overwhelming. Combined with the enormous public backlash, her case moved quickly through the courts. She was sentenced without much delay. The Carter family wasn't spared either. After the scandal spread across the internet, the company's stock price crashed as soon as the market opened.Potential investors pulled out one after

I snapped my fingers. The romantic wedding photos on the giant screen vanished instantly. In their place, a high-definition surveillance video began to play. The footage showed the living room of Jason's luxury penthouse. Nicole and Jason were tangled together on the couch, their clothes in disarray. Then Nicole's voice rang through the ballroom speakers."Jason, you really know what you're doing, in bed. Ethan's just too innocent. He could never compare to you.""Oh?" Jason chuckled. "If he's so innocent, why don't you go back to him?"Nicole answered not with words, but by throwing herself back into his arms, followed by more action. The ballroom exploded.Gasps.Screams.The relentless clicking of camera shutters.Everything blended into deafening chaos.Nicole stood frozen, staring at the enormous screen. The color drained from her face.Suddenly she sprang to her feet."Turn it off!" She screamed at the sound technician. "Turn it off right now! It's fake! Someone edited this!"No

The wedding was held in the grand ballroom atop the largest five-star hotel in Ashton City. The room was packed with guests.Nicole had become one of the fastest-rising stars in the business world, and she'd carefully cultivated the image of a self-made success who had never forgotten the man who stood by her through the hardest years of her life. This "against-all-odds love story" had become a media sensation. Reporters and cameras filled the venue.I stood before the full-length mirror in the bridal suite, dressed in a custom-made tuxedo worth tens of thousands of dollars.Behind me stood my older self. He wore a janitor's uniform. His scarred hands carefully straightened my bow tie."Everything ready?" I asked, meeting his eyes in the mirror."Rest assured."He patted my shoulder gently. His voice trembled with excitement."The livestream has already been routed to the ballroom's main screen. It's broadcasting across every major platform."The trending topics are already in place. T

By the time the recording ended, I didn't even have the strength to laugh."Ethan?" Nicole's voice pulled me back to reality. She sipped the soup I'd made for her, but her gaze drifted uneasily."I've been thinking..."I need to use the startup fund we saved during college."A chill settled in my chest. Outwardly, though, I remained calm."What's wrong? Is something going on with the project?"Back in college, we'd been desperate to escape our broken families. We worked every part-time job we could find, and took on freelance projects. There was even a time I'd stayed up night after night finishing design work until I landed in the hospital with a bleeding ulcer. Only then had we finally managed to save $1 million. That money wasn't just our savings. It was our future, the foundation we'd planned to use to launch our own company after graduation.Nicole hesitated for a split second before forcing a composed smile."Yeah, a project I'm working on ran into some unexpected problems. I jus

The hands around my throat froze.A second later, his grip loosened completely. It was as if every ounce of strength had drained from his body.He staggered backward several steps, staring at me in disbelief.I clutched my neck, coughing violently as I struggled to pull fresh air back into my lungs. When I finally caught my breath, I straightened up and walked toward him."I know what you've been through. And I know you're at your limit."My voice softened. I stepped forward and gently embraced this broken version of myself."You've been trapped for so long that all you can think about is escaping her. "There's nothing wrong with that. But running away isn't our only option."I held him tighter."I promise you, I will never betray myself."I spoke each word slowly, firmly."So listen to me. I'm going to destroy her. I'm going to strip away everything she has."I'm going to make her wish she'd never met me. But I need your help."I looked him straight in the eyes."You have twenty year
