Chapter 5

مؤلف: Sharpie
Maybe it was just a coincidence.

I didn't overthink it and continued to focus on my work.

The Lansford Group merger moved along much faster than anticipated. We went through three drafts of the core report, and the client signed the letter of intent the same day the final version was submitted.

The project was officially ours.

Surprisingly, Ashton organized a celebratory party on the company's behalf.

Over the past eight years, I had helped him secure over a dozen major deals, and he had never once thrown me a celebration.

I sat near the middle of the long table, clinking glasses with my colleagues from the analysis department.

Eve sat right next to Ashton, smiling brightly as she repeatedly placed food onto his plate. She was fluttering around him like a happy butterfly.

"Mr. Clark, these garlic butter shrimp are incredible. You have to try one."

My hand froze around my wine glass.

Garlic.

Ashton was severely allergic to garlic. Eating it would cause him to break out in hives all over his body. In severe cases, his throat would swell shut.

I instinctively glanced up, but I immediately pulled my gaze back without saying a single word.

I wasn't sure if I had imagined it, but the faint spark that had been in Ashton's eyes completely vanished.

He set his cutlery down. His tone was sharp and laced with irritation as he said, "I'm allergic to garlic. Eat what you order yourself. Stop putting it on my plate."

Eve's smile froze, and her entire face flushed a deep crimson out of pure embarrassment.

Ashton drank heavily throughout the party. By the time the night wrapped up, he could barely stand upright.

He tried calling for a designated driver twice with no luck. Eve stepped forward to support him, but he brushed her hand off.

Ultimately, I was the one who got him back to the apartment.

I hauled him through the door, dumped him onto the couch, and tossed a blanket over him.

I didn't take off his shoes, wipe his face with a warm towel, or make him warm honey water to help him sober up.

As I turned to leave, he clamped his hand around my wrist and said, "Sylvia."

His eyes were half-open, but they were heavily bloodshot. "Are you still angry about Eve?"

I looked down at his grip on my wrist. "You're overthinking it. Go to sleep. Stop making a fuss."

The grip on my wrist suddenly went slack. He froze, utterly stunned.

Because those exact words—"stop making a fuss"—were words he had said to me at least 100 times.

Every time I felt wronged, every time I questioned him, every time I cried and told him that he didn't care about me, his response was always the same. "Can you stop making a fuss?"

In the days that followed, I stayed late at work every day.

It wasn't just because I was busy. It was because things were shifting back at the apartment.

The trash cans were no longer overflowing. Someone was regularly taking them out. The sink was no longer piled high with mugs overnight, and the fridge was suddenly stocked with my favorite brand of milk, always with a fresh expiration date.

One night, I came home past midnight and noticed a new pair of slippers sitting on the shoe rack, much thicker than my old ones.

If this had happened in the past, I probably would have been too thrilled to sleep.

But now, these subtle changes only left me feeling annoyed. Working late felt much easier.

For the first time, I finally understood why Ashton used to love staying late at the office so much.

Until one night, I fell asleep right at my desk.

When I woke up, a jacket was draped over my shoulders. Ashton was standing right beside me, his face terrifyingly pale.

I groggily sat up straight and met his eyes.

He was staring at my computer screen, which was completely black.

"You aren't actually working."

His voice was barely above a whisper, yet every single word he spoke carried a tremor. "You've been lying to me this whole time."

I glanced at the dark monitor and suddenly felt a profound wave of relief.

It was better this way. I didn't have to keep up the act anymore.

I pulled two items from my desk drawer and laid them flat on the table.

The moment Ashton saw what they were, he froze completely.

I continued, "If you had told me during our fourth year, I would have also stayed. Even in our sixth year, when your mom forced me to sign that agreement, if you had just told me not to sign it, I still would have stayed. But I won't anymore."Ashton's hands slipped from the steering wheel. He looked entirely deflated, as if something vital had been drained from him.I opened the door of a cab and slid inside. As the car pulled away, I watched through the rearview mirror. His sedan remained parked right there by the curb.Even after the cab turned the corner, that car hadn't moved an inch.…Three months later, I was working at the headquarters of Apex Corp's Elysian division.Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows on the 47th floor, the entire city skyline stretched out.I was sitting in my office—not a cubicle but a private office. The nameplate on the door read, "Sylvia Duncan, Partner."On my desk lay the first project I had secured. It was a cross-border merger with a targe

I froze when I heard that.Eve continued, "The night you brought Mr. Clark that chowder, I was the one who put the lunchbox the cleaning lady mentioned on his desk. But he didn't even look at it before telling me to take it away. I was frustrated, so I threw it in the trash."She lowered her head. "The cleaning lady assumed he had finished it and thrown it out, but it was never even opened."I stood there, a faint buzzing in my ears. "But you bragged about it in the office.""I did it on purpose."Eve looked up at me, her eyes brimming with tears. "Sylvia, I was just jealous of you. From my very first day at the company, everyone kept saying that Mr. Clark had a formidable woman by his side."They said you'd been with him for eight years, your work was flawless, and your position was completely unshakeable. I thought that if I could make you believe he liked me, you'd break down, make a mistake, and leave on your own."She sniffled. "But you never broke. You're so much stronger

I looked at Ashton and replied, "I know. But what does that have to do with me?"I stood up and continued, "Three years ago, I pulled seven all-nighters to finish that report. The night before the presentation, I was running a 104-degree fever. I was hooked up to an IV drip while finishing the slides."The next day, you stood on that stage in your custom suit, and everyone praised your professionalism, precision, and genius. Meanwhile, I was sitting in the audience, my fever still burning. You couldn't even bother to bring me a bottle of water."The entire office went so quiet that I could hear a pin drop. All eyes were on us.Ashton's Adam's apple bobbed heavily twice. "I'm sorry."The words seemed to take every ounce of strength he possessed.I looked at him.Eight years, and this was the very first time I had ever heard him apologize. It was incredibly ironic. This apology wasn't born out of genuine remorse. It was sparked by a 20-million-dollar liability."The raw data is

I set a glass of water down in front of Aileen. "Mrs. Clark, I'm leaving because I want to leave. Not to negotiate terms with anyone."She let out a sharp laugh. "Alright. Cut the act. I've met plenty of young ladies like you from small towns."She pulled a check from her bag and slid it onto the coffee table. "Here's ten thousand dollars. Take the money, sign a non-disclosure agreement, and make a clean break. Don't run around talking about your history with Ashton. It's embarrassing."I looked down at the check. Ten thousand dollars to buy out eight years of my youth.I pushed the check right back toward Aileen. "Mrs. Clark, during my sixth year here, you made me sign an agreement. It explicitly stated that if my relationship with Ashton ended, I had no right to seek financial compensation from the Clark family. I signed it. So, I don't want your money."But there was a clause in that agreement you might have forgotten. It also stated that the Clark family shall not interfere wi

Larry rushed over to my desk, dripping with sweat. "Sylvia, please, if you don't step in on this, nobody else can fix it."I pushed my handover documents to the side. "Fine. But on one condition.""Name it.""My name goes on the official project roster. Not as an assistant or a coordinator but as the lead analyst."Larry blinked in surprise, then nodded vigorously. "Consider it done. Honestly, it should have been that way all along."I spent the next two days rerunning the earn-out model, followed by an all-nighter restructuring the cross-shareholding strategy.By the third afternoon, the new proposal was handed over to the opposing legal team.Their lead attorney reviewed it, then took off his glasses and asked, "Who put this strategy together?"Larry pointed at me. "Sylvia Duncan, the lead analyst for our investment analysis department."The attorney looked me up and down, then nodded in approval. "Excellent work. This is a lot better than the stuff Mr. Clark brought to the

Among the two items, one was a partnership invitation from Apex Corp's Elysian division. The other was my resignation letter.I looked at Ashton and said casually, "I'm leaving."It took him a long time to snap out of his daze. His Adam's apple bobbed."Apex Corp?" His voice sounded raspy. "A partner position at the Elysian division?"I nodded. "The headhunter reached out to me three times after the Lansford Group merger went through."Ashton ran his fingers along the edge of the resignation letter, his fingertips turning pale."I'm not approving this." He pushed the letter back across the desk and continued, "Sylvia, you need to calm down.""I am calm. This is the calmest I've been in eight years."He stared at me, an unfamiliar storm brewing in the depths of his eyes. "If you want to leave, fine, but only after a proper handover. You know the post-merger integration for Lansford Group better than anyone. Walking out right now is completely irresponsible."I smiled. "You can
