Chapter 4

Author: Sharpie
Ashton stood in the doorway. His shirt collar was unbuttoned, and his tie was crooked.

After scanning the room, his gaze landed right on the clipboard I'd slapped against Eve's chest.

"Sylvia, what are you doing? Eve is a new intern, while you're a senior employee. Act like one when you're training someone, and keep your personal feelings out of the workplace."

His voice wasn't loud, but every single word was a defense of Eve. And he said it in front of everyone outside the CEO's office.

The old me would have lowered my head with tear-filled eyes and mumbled, "I'm sorry. I'll be more careful next time."

But that day, I just nodded. "You're absolutely right, Mr. Clark. I clearly lack the ability to train an intern."

I pulled a document from my bag and smacked it onto the desk in front of him. "This is my transfer request. Please sign it. I'm moving back to the investment analysis department."

Ashton's expression shifted. As he looked down at the paper, his mouth twitched. "This is nonsense."

He pushed the document back toward me. "You've been with the CEO's Office for eight years. You know the operations better than anyone. Why would you transfer?"

"Mr. Clark, in my eight years here, the only real work I've done is write your analysis reports."

My voice wasn't loud, but it carried perfectly across the quiet office.

"I built the core risk-control model for last year's Evermont merger. The year before that, I set up the entire financial analysis framework for the Sterling investment.

"I even pulled an all-nighter to put together the final presentation slides you used on stage for the Axiom restructuring three years ago."

I looked Ashton straight in the eye and said, "Yet, every single one of those reports went out under your name."

Someone in the office gasped.

Ashton's face flushed a deep crimson.

Eve's hands were shaking so badly that she could barely hold the coffee cup.

"You…"

Gritting his teeth, Ashton forced the words out. "Sylvia, do you have any idea what you're saying?"

"I have proof for everything I just said," I replied. My tone was so calm that it surprised even me.

"I have the email logs, document edit histories, and IP login timestamps. Mr. Clark, if you don't want to sign my transfer, I don't mind sending those files to the board of directors."

The office went dead silent.

Ashton's hand trembled slightly around his pen, and he stared at me for a long time. It was as if he were looking at a total stranger.

In the end, he signed it.

I picked up the approved request and turned to walk out.

Just as I reached the door, a voice called out behind me. "Sylvia."

The three syllables carried a faint trace of panic Ashton probably didn't even realize was there.

My pace faltered for a fraction of a second. It wasn't out of hesitation but surprise.

This was the first time in eight years that this man had ever called after me when I turned to leave.

I smiled to myself and kept walking out the door.

My transfer back to the investment analysis department went smoother than I expected.

The director, Larry Wilder, personally introduced me to the team. By that afternoon, the multinational merger for Lansford Group was on my desk.

It felt incredible to be busy again.

With my brain packed with data and financial models, there was no room left for me to think about anything else.

When I returned to the apartment that night, Ashton was sitting on the living room couch watching TV.

He heard the door open, and his thumb paused on the remote.

I changed into my slippers, walked straight into the guest bedroom, and shut the door.

I didn't greet him, and he didn't call out to me either.

Just like that, we became nothing more than roommates.

Maybe I was just imagining things, but several times when I stepped out of the guest room to grab a glass of water, I caught a glimpse of Ashton quickly turning his head away out of the corner of my eye.

It was the same story at the office.

The investment analysis department was on the 12th floor, and the CEO's Office was on the 26th.

Logically, we shouldn't have run into each other at all.

Yet, I kept running into him—in the break room, the copy room, and even the elevator when I went down to the lobby to pick up a package.

I continued, "If you had told me during our fourth year, I would have also stayed. Even in our sixth year, when your mom forced me to sign that agreement, if you had just told me not to sign it, I still would have stayed. But I won't anymore."Ashton's hands slipped from the steering wheel. He looked entirely deflated, as if something vital had been drained from him.I opened the door of a cab and slid inside. As the car pulled away, I watched through the rearview mirror. His sedan remained parked right there by the curb.Even after the cab turned the corner, that car hadn't moved an inch.…Three months later, I was working at the headquarters of Apex Corp's Elysian division.Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows on the 47th floor, the entire city skyline stretched out.I was sitting in my office—not a cubicle but a private office. The nameplate on the door read, "Sylvia Duncan, Partner."On my desk lay the first project I had secured. It was a cross-border merger with a targe

I froze when I heard that.Eve continued, "The night you brought Mr. Clark that chowder, I was the one who put the lunchbox the cleaning lady mentioned on his desk. But he didn't even look at it before telling me to take it away. I was frustrated, so I threw it in the trash."She lowered her head. "The cleaning lady assumed he had finished it and thrown it out, but it was never even opened."I stood there, a faint buzzing in my ears. "But you bragged about it in the office.""I did it on purpose."Eve looked up at me, her eyes brimming with tears. "Sylvia, I was just jealous of you. From my very first day at the company, everyone kept saying that Mr. Clark had a formidable woman by his side."They said you'd been with him for eight years, your work was flawless, and your position was completely unshakeable. I thought that if I could make you believe he liked me, you'd break down, make a mistake, and leave on your own."She sniffled. "But you never broke. You're so much stronger

I looked at Ashton and replied, "I know. But what does that have to do with me?"I stood up and continued, "Three years ago, I pulled seven all-nighters to finish that report. The night before the presentation, I was running a 104-degree fever. I was hooked up to an IV drip while finishing the slides."The next day, you stood on that stage in your custom suit, and everyone praised your professionalism, precision, and genius. Meanwhile, I was sitting in the audience, my fever still burning. You couldn't even bother to bring me a bottle of water."The entire office went so quiet that I could hear a pin drop. All eyes were on us.Ashton's Adam's apple bobbed heavily twice. "I'm sorry."The words seemed to take every ounce of strength he possessed.I looked at him.Eight years, and this was the very first time I had ever heard him apologize. It was incredibly ironic. This apology wasn't born out of genuine remorse. It was sparked by a 20-million-dollar liability."The raw data is

I set a glass of water down in front of Aileen. "Mrs. Clark, I'm leaving because I want to leave. Not to negotiate terms with anyone."She let out a sharp laugh. "Alright. Cut the act. I've met plenty of young ladies like you from small towns."She pulled a check from her bag and slid it onto the coffee table. "Here's ten thousand dollars. Take the money, sign a non-disclosure agreement, and make a clean break. Don't run around talking about your history with Ashton. It's embarrassing."I looked down at the check. Ten thousand dollars to buy out eight years of my youth.I pushed the check right back toward Aileen. "Mrs. Clark, during my sixth year here, you made me sign an agreement. It explicitly stated that if my relationship with Ashton ended, I had no right to seek financial compensation from the Clark family. I signed it. So, I don't want your money."But there was a clause in that agreement you might have forgotten. It also stated that the Clark family shall not interfere wi

Larry rushed over to my desk, dripping with sweat. "Sylvia, please, if you don't step in on this, nobody else can fix it."I pushed my handover documents to the side. "Fine. But on one condition.""Name it.""My name goes on the official project roster. Not as an assistant or a coordinator but as the lead analyst."Larry blinked in surprise, then nodded vigorously. "Consider it done. Honestly, it should have been that way all along."I spent the next two days rerunning the earn-out model, followed by an all-nighter restructuring the cross-shareholding strategy.By the third afternoon, the new proposal was handed over to the opposing legal team.Their lead attorney reviewed it, then took off his glasses and asked, "Who put this strategy together?"Larry pointed at me. "Sylvia Duncan, the lead analyst for our investment analysis department."The attorney looked me up and down, then nodded in approval. "Excellent work. This is a lot better than the stuff Mr. Clark brought to the

Among the two items, one was a partnership invitation from Apex Corp's Elysian division. The other was my resignation letter.I looked at Ashton and said casually, "I'm leaving."It took him a long time to snap out of his daze. His Adam's apple bobbed."Apex Corp?" His voice sounded raspy. "A partner position at the Elysian division?"I nodded. "The headhunter reached out to me three times after the Lansford Group merger went through."Ashton ran his fingers along the edge of the resignation letter, his fingertips turning pale."I'm not approving this." He pushed the letter back across the desk and continued, "Sylvia, you need to calm down.""I am calm. This is the calmest I've been in eight years."He stared at me, an unfamiliar storm brewing in the depths of his eyes. "If you want to leave, fine, but only after a proper handover. You know the post-merger integration for Lansford Group better than anyone. Walking out right now is completely irresponsible."I smiled. "You can
