Chapter 4

Author: Cocojam
Upstairs, in the study, the air was thick with tension.

A large monitor in the center of the room showed the feed from the bedroom. The audio was crystal clear.

All the Capos were staring at the screen’s title: [Cold-Blooded Doctor Aurora Begs Vitale Family for Forgiveness].

But Nico didn’t know something.

The secret, local network he’d set up for this private live stream? My top hacker had hijacked it five minutes ago.

Now, this stream wasn’t just playing in the Vitale family study. It had been pinned, with the highest level of clearance, directly to the front page of the North American darknet forum.

Every scumbag who trashed my name online was now glued to this live broadcast.

Everyone was holding their breath, waiting for the show.

[The bitch finally caved! Good job, Vitale family!]

[Let’s watch this fraud get on her knees and beg!]

[I feel so bad for Miss Isabella, having to face this venomous woman.]

Isabella lay in bed, her face still a mask of pale fragility.

When she saw me, she let out a trembling, “Nico...”

She had no idea that thousands of ears were listening in.

“Don’t be afraid. She’s here to treat you this time.”

Nico put his gun away, stood up, and walked over to me.

He knew the family elders were watching. His posture was arrogant.

“Aurora. Get started. Fix my sister.”

“You fail, and you’re out of Chicago for good.”

I ignored him.

I walked straight to the medical equipment by the bed.

As I put on my gloves, I shot him a cold glance.

Nico gritted his teeth. But with all the Capos watching, he held back. He just sneered.

He stepped aside, hands in his pockets.

The study, and the entire darknet forum, went silent.

I turned my back to the hidden cameras. I picked up my stethoscope and placed it on Isabella’s chest.

“Breathe in.”

“Breathe out.”

Isabella was very cooperative. Her breaths were heavy, her brow furrowed. She was playing the part of a fragile, broken doll.

Through the hidden mic, I could hear Nico’s pained gasp. I could imagine the flood of sympathetic comments on the darknet.

I put the stethoscope down.

I picked up the thick stack of medical reports from all the famous doctors the Vitale family had consulted over the years.

Congenital heart defects. Insufficient myocardial blood supply. Each diagnosis was more severe than the last.

I flipped through them, page by page. My frown deepened.

I looked for about five minutes.

Then I slammed the reports back down on the table with a loud smack.

I took off my gloves. Turned around.

“Isabella. Your condition... it’s a tricky one.”

Nico, playing to the cameras, sneered.

“What’s that supposed to mean? I thought you were the great ‘Dawn’? You can’t cure her either? You’re a fraud!”

I could hear an angry stir from the elders in the study. The insults on the darknet exploded.

I paid them no mind.

Instead, I spun around and ripped the thin blanket off Isabella.

I dug my thumb deep under her floating rib. Hit the nerve cluster. Hard.

“AHHHH!!!”

A piercing scream shattered the quiet bedroom.

Isabella, who had been “too weak to breathe,” shot up from the bed like an enraged cat.

Nico instantly drew his gun on me. “What are you doing! You want to die!”

I looked at him coldly. Then I looked up, at the micro-camera.

I knew the entire power structure of the North American underworld was watching this farce.

I met his shocked, furious gaze and spoke, my voice light and clear.

“A dying girl. Too weak to breathe. Yet she jumps out of bed like a track star.”

I wiped my hands clean, a cold smile on my face as I looked at the two frozen siblings.

“Nico Vitale, your sister isn’t sick at all. She’s been playing you—and everyone else—for ten years.”

Nico froze. His lips trembled. Unable to say a word.I didn’t let him breathe.“Ten years ago, you put a gun to my head. Called me a fake.” My voice was quiet, but it sliced through the silence in the room. “For that liar, you threw me out that iron gate in front of everyone.”“Ten years later, to protect her, you sent dirty cops to my door. Smeared my name to the whole city.”I took another step forward.“And now you have the gall to ask me if this is revenge?”Nico’s face went from white to red and back again. His mouth opened and closed. Nothing came out.My gaze was a blade. Forcing him back. The sheer force of my presence made him stiffen, unable to squeeze out a single word of defense."Seraphina…" Carmela tried again, her voice pleading. “Mom knows she was wrong. Give us a chance…”I held up a hand. Cut her off.“No.”One word. Final. No room for negotiation.“I don’t need your apologies.”I turned my back on their crumbling family portrait. My eyes went past them. To the old ma

Isabella was speechless. Her mouth hung open. Her lips trembled. But she couldn’t form a single word. The fragile mask she wore for ten years… it shattered.I looked down at her, my voice devoid of any emotion.“You think this little show today was just for the people in this room?”I pointed to a small, unremarkable ornament on the wall.“My hackers hijacked the feed from that vent hours ago. The entire North American dark web, hundreds of thousands of people, have been watching this live since the moment you asked for a cut of a gun route.”Isabella’s face turned to ash.A deep, soul-crushing terror. She realized this wasn’t just some family scandal. This was a public execution. Streamed for everyone to see.Dr. Russo stared at the lab report on his chest. He slumped. Like his bones had turned to dust.Isabella couldn’t take it anymore. She tumbled off the bed. Her knees hit the floor hard. She didn’t even feel the pain. She scrambled to Vincent’s feet, grabbing his pant leg."Dad, I

The chat feed went dead for two seconds. Then it erupted.【WTF WTF WTF!!! THE COSTELLO HEIR?!】【DON COSTELLO SAID IT HIMSELF. IT’S REAL!】【LOL the Vitale family just kicked a hornets' nest.】The comments flew by. A blur on the screen.I had no time for that.I straightened my jacket. Walked over to the woman pinned to the floor.I looked down at her.“Your husband died on the table? Is he in a landfill? Or at the bottom of Lake Michigan?”The woman flinched. Her eyes darted away.“Wh-what are you asking that for…”“What was his name? What neighborhood was he from? Was the bullet a .45 ACP or a 9mm Parabellum? What day was the surgery?” I pressed on. My voice was ice.Her mouth opened. She couldn’t answer a thing. She just repeated, mechanically, “My husband was shot… he was just shot…”The dark web chat exploded with laughter.【That's the best she can do? Doesn't even know the bullet type?】【This whole act is so sloppy.】【The Vitale family needs to hire better actors.】The woman’s face

Pathetic.Truly pathetic.I stood there. Watched the self-righteous cruelty on Vincent’s face. I just felt amused. In my last life, I thought they actually cared about me.Now I get it. They never cared about the truth. Only about face.I was about to speak, but I caught Vincent give a subtle signal to the guards at the door.It was fast. Almost invisible. But I saw it.Less than two minutes later.A shrill cry echoed from the hallway.A middle-aged woman in a worn-out coat burst in. Shoving past the guards. Her eyes were bloodshot. Her face twisted with despair.“It was you!” Her eyes locked on me. She lunged, grabbing the front of my jacket. “You killed my husband!”Her grip was terrifyingly strong. Her nails dug into my skin.“He was just hit by a stray bullet in some gang fight! You let him bleed out on the table because we didn't have the cash!”Her nails raked across the back of my hand. Two bloody lines appeared. Stinging.Nico crossed his arms, a smirk on his face.“You have bl

Dr. Russo wasn’t even finished talking, and I laughed.A small laugh. Pure mockery."Twenty years. No lies." I repeated his words, my eyes locked on his. “So let me ask you. Did you just take the payoff? Or did you cook up the symptoms yourself? Doctor the charts?”Dr. Russo’s pupils shrank.A flash of panic. I saw it.But he straightened his back, his voice suddenly shouting.“You’re insulting my professional integrity! I’ve practiced for two decades. I built my reputation on trust, not fraud!”Beads of sweat popped on his forehead.Isabella sat up in bed. Looking like the world’s greatest victim."Aurora, that's enough!" Her voice was a mix of hurt and fury. “You can’t cure me. Fine. But now you’re trying to drag Dr. Russo down? Where’s your proof? Show it!”That’s what I was waiting for.I slowly pulled my phone from my pocket. Played the audio I’d recorded yesterday.“My proof? Right here.”The study went quiet.Isabella’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and clear.“This sick

Nico’s face went dark.“What did you just say?” His voice was a low growl. “Are you serious?”Isabella was fast. She clutched her ribs where I’d pressed. Doubled over. Gasped for air on the bed."Nico… it hurts…" she stammered. "It's… a stress spasm… sudden pain… I can't control it…"A perfect performance.Any doubt in Nico’s mind vanished. He turned to rush over to her.The study was quiet for a few seconds.Isabella coughed twice more, her voice a strained whisper. "Nico, stop… She's just doing her job…"Nico grabbed his sister’s hand. When he looked back at me, his eyes were daggers.“Aurora. Are you ignoring the reports from top specialists? Or do you think you can play the Vitale family for fools?”The dark web chat exploded.【WTF, did I just see her jump like that?】【Is this doctor trying to blame someone else for her own screw-up?】【The patient is in agony and she's saying she's fine?
