Chapter 1

The conference room went silent for several seconds.

Tessa Ford's eyes immediately filled with tears.

"Am I putting you in a difficult position? I'm sorry. I only thought living closer to the office would make late-night revisions easier."

The product manager beside me spoke quietly.

"Maya, that apartment usually sits empty anyway."

Someone else joined in.

"It's only a few months. Tessa's still working this hard while pregnant. It hasn't been easy for her."

Victor Hale sat at the head of the table, tapping two fingers against the surface.

"Maya, we're at a critical stage of the project. Supporting one another as a team isn't a bad thing."

I looked at him.

"Victor, if an employee is being asked to provide private housing to another employee, does that need to be reported and documented with Compliance?"

He frowned.

"There's no need to make it that complicated."

"Then it's even less appropriate."

I capped my pen.

"The apartment is my private property. It isn't a project resource.

"If Tessa needs housing, the company can approve a temporary accommodation allowance through the normal process. I'll support that."

Tessa bit her lip, tears clinging to her lashes.

"But finding a place this suddenly is hard, and anything close to the office is expensive.

"Maya, after everything we've worked through together, I thought we were friends."

The atmosphere changed immediately.

I didn't take the bait.

"Friends still need boundaries."

Someone muttered under their breath.

"Cold-blooded."

"She's probably afraid Tessa will start taking credit from her."

"Pregnancy isn't a crime. Does she really need to be this defensive?"

More comments drifted through my vision.

[She's putting you on the spot in front of everyone.]

[Don't explain. The more you explain, the guiltier you'll look.]

[Adrian Cross will call you in ten minutes.]

The meeting ended.

Less than ten minutes later, my phone vibrated.

"Maya, I heard you turned Tessa down today?"

I stood in the stairwell, looking out at the gray sky.

"News travels fast."

He gave a soft laugh.

"A lot of people at our two companies went to school together. Everyone's talking about it in the group chats.

"Don't take it personally. I'm only worried people might misunderstand you."

"So?"

"She's pregnant. There's no need to burn bridges.

"It's only a place to stay. You could have her sign an agreement."

The comments floated up again, colder this time.

[Listen to how considerate he sounds.]

[He still remembers the backup access code to your apartment.]

[Last week, he sent Tessa photos of your living room.]

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Adrian, do you know Tessa?"

There was a pause.

"I've heard the name. I don't really know her."

I smiled.

"You don't know her."

"Of course not.

"Maya, have you been working too much lately? Stop imagining the worst in people."

I ended the call.

I didn't confront him.

The comments were right.

If I blew this up now, I'd only tip them off and they'd change their plan.

I went back to my desk and messaged Leah Sutton from Legal.

"Are you free tonight? I need help preserving evidence."

Her reply came quickly.

"What happened?"

I glanced at Tessa across the office, head lowered as she wiped at her eyes.

"Someone wants to borrow my apartment.

"And take my life while they're at it."

The case was decided the following spring.Tessa was convicted of making false accusations, forging evidence, and unlawful entry into a residence.Adrian faced more serious consequences. His charges included commercial espionage, unlawful acquisition of computer-system data, and directing others to forge materials.Riverton Digital made him the principal party responsible. The company lost its eligibility to bid on the project.ClearPeak won.At the celebration dinner, Victor raised his glass toward me."Maya, this is for you."The company treated you unfairly."I didn't pick up my drink."I accepted the apology in the public notice."I don't need a private toast."Someone at the table gave an awkward laugh.Another person tried to smooth things over."What's done is done. Tonight's a celebration."I looked at him."It's over for you."Not for me."He stopped talking.I didn't need them to like me.I didn't need them to call me generous. My kindness had almost bee

ClearPeak's clarification statement came quickly. The company confirmed that I had not leaked any project materials. The file transmitted from my home network had been a controlled security honeypot.Evidence that Tessa illegally entered my residence had been turned over to the police.Riverton Digital suspended Adrian.Police then took him in for investigation. The financial crimes unit also examined Riverton's servers. For several days, the entire industry talked about the case. Some people still said I had gone too far."Tessa already lost the baby. She still has to go to prison?""Adrian's a scumbag, but Maya set a trap before anything happened. She isn't exactly harmless.""If she'd just lent the apartment in the first place, none of this would've happened."Leah sent me screenshots of the comments. Her hands were shaking with anger."I'm going to go after every one of them.""No need."That evening, every person spreading false accusations received a legal notice.

Tessa confessed faster than I expected. She wasn't built to hold out.Police placed the recovered chats, transfers, forged email, locksmith request, and router purchase records in front of her.She unraveled. Two weeks earlier, she'd learned something was wrong with the pregnancy. When the test results came back, she didn't dare tell her husband, Kevin. The baby wasn't his.She went to Adrian. At first, he comforted her and promised compensation. Then Riverton Digital completed an internal assessment. If ClearPeak won this project, Riverton would struggle to recover for at least three years.Adrian changed his plan.He said, "Maya is too careful. Fishing for information won't work on her."He said, "You're pregnant. If you cry, people will believe you."He said, "She's my girlfriend. Jealousy gives her a ready-made motive."He said, "The baby's already gone. We might as well make it useful."Tessa's job was to ask publicly for my apartment during the project meeting and

Before dawn, the company servers were secured and preserved for investigation.I was temporarily suspended.Victor personally sent the notice. The wording was polished."To facilitate the investigation, Maya Quinn's project access is temporarily suspended."No one openly attacked me in the main project group anymore.Screenshots from smaller private chats still reached my phone."Even if the baby had already died, Maya isn't innocent. What normal person sets a honeypot in advance?""She obviously knew her boyfriend was cheating and waited for the perfect chance to trap them.""Tessa's situation is awful, but Maya is scary too. She's way too calculating."I forwarded the screenshots to Leah."You're not angry?" she asked."I am.""Then why are you so calm?""Because it's not time for me to be angry yet."The next afternoon, the preliminary digital-forensics report arrived. The honeypot file had been opened three times.First, through the fake network environment create

Detective Morris had the black device sealed as evidence.Adrian recovered quickly."Traffic landing on Riverton Digital's network doesn't prove I was involved. Relay chains are everywhere these days. Someone could be framing me."I nodded."That's true."He looked at me, clearly not expecting agreement.I continued."Which is why we need to find out who installed it."Police pulled the hallway footage. At 2:06 p.m., a man in a gray coat and baseball cap appeared on the sixth floor. He carried a toolbox. He remained at my door for four minutes. The camera didn't catch his face clearly. But as he left, part of an employee lanyard showed beneath his sleeve.Blue and white.Riverton Digital's colors.Adrian spoke immediately."You can buy lanyards like that online."Detective Morris ignored him and turned to Mr. Bell."Who contacted the locksmith?"He wiped his forehead."Ms. Ford called. She said Ms. Quinn had authorized her to move in, that she'd forgotten her key,

The police arrived quickly. The lead investigator was a female detective, Elena Morris. Her first action was to clear the hallway.Every coworker filming at the door was sent downstairs.Property management, the locksmith, Leah, Adrian, Victor, and I were all separated and interviewed.Tessa had already been taken to the hospital, and officers were assigned there at the same time to preserve medical evidence.I stayed outside the apartment.I didn't set foot inside.Detective Morris looked at me."Why aren't you going in?""I don't want to disturb the scene."She studied me for a moment."You seem familiar with the process.""I manage projects."I know what preserving the original condition means."Leah submitted the certified video, the access-control changes, the refund memo, and the compliance disclosure email one by one.Victor looked worse with every document."Maya, if you already thought there was a risk, why didn't you warn the company earlier?"I looked at hi
