Veronica’s POV

My jaw dropped so loud, lining my lips together felt almost impossible.

“I'm pregnant?” I stood staring at the pregnancy test kit for more than five minutes.

“Wait… Am I really pregnant? Ho—”

I caught sight of my reflection in the bathroom mirror. My face was swollen red, my eyes watered and my nostrils looked like… Pipelines?

“I'm really pregnant.” My hands went to my underbelly, and I could feel the warmth already spreading to my palms.

This was… this was a miracle!

“Oh my goodness!” I gasped when the news had settled in me. After so long, I was finally going to have a child.

A knock outside the door distracted me.

“Are you alright, in there?” Four’s voice rumbled through the walls, “Do you need some help?”

“No!” I blurted out quickly. “Don't come in either.”

“Alright.”

I grabbed the side of my dress and adjusted it, my panties and underwear were next.

A sleek push-up and I was back to being decent. I grabbed my hair in a loose messy bun, a quick check on my face made me wipe the sides of my eyes, the threatening gunk from my eyes had to go if I was to break such amazing news to Jason.

Oh! I could already imagine how happy he was going to be.

I tore through the bathroom door with a pace so fast, I was like a cartoon character.

“Where the heck are you going?” Four asked me.

My eyes rolled in their sockets. Disgust sat wide and spread on my lips.

“And why would you ask me that, mate?”

“I just want to be sure you're not on your way to another back to go have some random pleasure things with another random stranger.”

I recoiled at his words. “Lower your blow, would you?”

“I'll try to.”

“Thanks.”

I snatched my keys off the side table and walked to the door, I gestured him out the door and into the living room. “I have great news for my husband if you don't mind.”

“You're married?” Four arched his brow.

“Is that so hard to believe?”

“Not after I found you yesterday. What news?”

“Well, it's none of your business so there's no need to tell you.”

“That's a lower blow. Ouch.”

The stranger was taking all of my time and so I walked out first, he followed me when he saw I wasn't in the mood for games.

“Get in,” I said when the door locks clicked open. “I'll drop you off at the estate gate.”

Four got into the passenger’s side. He grabbed the belt and sat patiently.

I started the engine, “Before anything else, I just wanted to say thank you. I'm not always like this…. Actually, I'm never like this, I was just having a breakdown and I could… I didn't know… I was just…”

I lost the words to fill in what I meant and so I stopped trying. Four nodded. “I understand. I'm just glad you're happy and safe.”

“Thanks.” My mouth twisted into a widened grin as the car pulled out of the driveway and into the street.

As soon as I let out Four, I was already on the highway headed to Jason's house.

“I can't believe I'm having a baby.” My lips grew wider, and my teeth flashed proudly at my reflection in the mirror. “I guess I'm not as barren as I thought.”

My fingers gripped the steering wheel tightly as I hastened my pace. When I was almost by Jason's house, I stopped by to get flowers.

A ‘Getting back together/ I'm pregnant’ gift.

Some flowers and chocolate. Knowing Jason, I knew he would take one good look at me and fall on his knees again, confessing his love to me.

“Wow, that's a lot of flowers,’ the florist said, her eyes wide. “Any specific occasion?”

“Thanks. I'm about to apologise to my husband.”

She took a whiff at me. “Wow. I'll say this. If I were your husband and you apologised to me with this many flowers, I would get you a diamond ring again and ask you to renew your wedding vows with me.”

“Gee! Thanks!” I didn't stop grinning while I slipped my card to her. “I hope he feels the same way.”

“Trust me, sis. There is no guy on earth who wouldn't say yes, I forgive you to these many flowers and a kiss. I mean, come on, you're beautiful and you've got a great head on your head.”

She packed the flowers into a bag and handed me a thank-you note. “I really hope you have a nice day.”

“Thank you.”

“You're welcome.”

I swerved into Jason's gate blasting a love song at the highest volume.

‘I will always remember….’

‘The day you kissed my lips… light as a feather… and it went just like this…’

Yes. That love song.

I caught the curtains upstairs but I couldn't tell if it was Jason or a maid.

Either way, I grabbed the flowers from the back seat and took the chocolate right out of the bag, singing that love song at the top of my voice.

“Jason, honey!” I screamed. “If you're hearing this, please come out.”

Nothing.

No one stepped out.

“Jason, bear. My baby honey, my pudding.”

Silence returned to me, left with the blasting echoes of the song that played in the background.

I started to breathe uneasily when I called the third time and he didn't answer, that's when I neared his door.

One knock.

A second and then a third, yet, Jason didn't answer.

I found the spare keys right in the flower pot we'd left them in years ago.

I pushed it into the lock and jangled them hard. The door creaked open before I stepped in.

“Jason?” I whispered, hoping the reason he hadn't called was because he wasn't home.

Oh, what a fool I was.

As my eyes adjusted to the dim light in the living room, I found the very man I was calling all the while, locked with his lips in Rhea’s mouth.

“JASON!” I screamed as the flowers fell to the floor and felt something shift in me.

If I weren't just newly pregnant, I could have sworn my water broke…

Veronica's POVThe gunshots grew louder and closer and my body moved before my mind could process fear. I grabbed Monte from Four's arms and dropped into a crouch in the corner farthest from the door. My son was awake now and his eyes were wide with terror that no five year old should ever experience."Mama, what is happening?""Shh, baby. Stay quiet for me. Can you do that?"He nodded but his whole body trembled against mine. I wrapped myself around him like a shield and felt my heart hammer so hard I thought it might break through my ribs.Four positioned himself at the door with his gun drawn. He had insisted on carrying despite hospital rules and now I understood why. The man I married had lived in worlds where violence was currency and survival was earned through preparation.Manuel's voice cut through the chaos. "Three hostiles plus Volkov. They are coming from the east corridor. Fall back to defensive positions."Gunfire erupted in the hallway. Sharp cracks that made Monte flin

Four's POVEvery instinct I had honed over decades screamed danger when Veronica pointed out the man in the blue jacket. I watched him through my peripheral vision and catalogued everything. The way he stood. The confidence in his posture. The calculating assessment in his eyes as they tracked my movements. This was not random.Manuel's security team moved into position with practised efficiency. They were professionals and their approach was subtle enough not to cause panic in the waiting room. But the man noticed. Of course, he noticed. He was a professional too.He stood and walked toward the exit. Not running. Not hurried. Just purposeful and controlled movement that told me everything I needed to know.He was surveilling us and we had just blown his cover. One of Manuel's men followed. The other stayed with us. I pulled Veronica closer and felt her heart racing against my side."Is Monte safe?" she whispered."He will be. I promise."My phone buzzed. Text from Manuel's team. Subj

Veronica's POVI stood in our bedroom packing Monte's clothes into a suitcase and felt rage burn through my chest. Four wanted to send us away like fragile things that needed storing in a safe place while men handled dangerous business.I was done being the protected damsel."We need to talk," I said when Four walked in. My voice was steady and cold. "If you try to send me away for my safety, I will fight you every step of the way.""Veronica, we already discussed this.""No. You decided. I disagreed. That is not a discussion." I turned to face him. "We are married. We are partners. I will not let you martyr yourself while Monte and I hide somewhere pretending everything is fine."Four crossed his arms. "Your safety and Monte's are my top priorities. That is not negotiable.""And your safety is mine. Also not negotiable." I moved closer. "You think I can function knowing someone is trying to kill you? That every phone call might be Manuel telling me you are dead? How is that protectin

Manuel's POVI sat in Four's security office staring at the phone number Margaret had given me. Unknown caller. Professional tone. Questions designed to extract information about Four's daily routines. This was reconnaissance. Someone was planning something. My shoulder still ached from the gunshot wound but my mind was sharp. I had spent twenty years protecting Four and I knew threat assessment better than most people knew their own names. This call was not random. It was deliberate and calculated.I called a contact at the phone company. Alex owed me favours from years back when I helped his sister disappear from an abusive ex-husband. He pulled records within an hour."The number belongs to a burner phone. Purchased with cash three days ago at a convenience store in Newark. No surveillance footage that far back. Dead end."I tha

Margaret's POVThe physical therapist pushed my shoulder back and I bit down hard to keep from crying out. Three months since that Moretti nurse shot me and my body still screamed in protest at every movement."You are doing great, Mrs Chen. Another week and we can increase the weight training."Great felt like an exaggeration. I could barely lift my arm above my head. But I smiled and nodded because complaining never fixed anything.Four visited that afternoon like he did every Tuesday and Thursday. He brought flowers, which made me uncomfortable because I was staff, not family. But he insisted."How are you feeling?""Better. The therapist says I am progressing well."Four sat in the chair beside my hospital bed. He looked tired. The trial had taken everything out of him. "Margaret, I need to say something. Y

Detective Rivera's POVI walked into the federal courthouse carrying three boxes of evidence and a determination to end this nightmare once and for all. The case against Vincent Carver and Gregory St. James was the most important of my career. Not because it was high-profile, though media vans lined the street outside. But it would finally give Four Winter and his family the peace they deserved. The courtroom was packed. Reporters filled the gallery. Sketch artists positioned themselves for the best angles. I spotted Veronica sitting in the front row behind the prosecution table. She wore a simple navy dress and held Four's hand. He looked better than he had in weeks. Manuel's recovery had given him hope. The judge entered and we all stood.
