Veronica’s POV

My jaw dropped so loud, lining my lips together felt almost impossible.

“I'm pregnant?” I stood staring at the pregnancy test kit for more than five minutes.

“Wait… Am I really pregnant? Ho—”

I caught sight of my reflection in the bathroom mirror. My face was swollen red, my eyes watered and my nostrils looked like… Pipelines?

“I'm really pregnant.” My hands went to my underbelly, and I could feel the warmth already spreading to my palms.

This was… this was a miracle!

“Oh my goodness!” I gasped when the news had settled in me. After so long, I was finally going to have a child.

A knock outside the door distracted me.

“Are you alright, in there?” Four’s voice rumbled through the walls, “Do you need some help?”

“No!” I blurted out quickly. “Don't come in either.”

“Alright.”

I grabbed the side of my dress and adjusted it, my panties and underwear were next.

A sleek push-up and I was back to being decent. I grabbed my hair in a loose messy bun, a quick check on my face made me wipe the sides of my eyes, the threatening gunk from my eyes had to go if I was to break such amazing news to Jason.

Oh! I could already imagine how happy he was going to be.

I tore through the bathroom door with a pace so fast, I was like a cartoon character.

“Where the heck are you going?” Four asked me.

My eyes rolled in their sockets. Disgust sat wide and spread on my lips.

“And why would you ask me that, mate?”

“I just want to be sure you're not on your way to another back to go have some random pleasure things with another random stranger.”

I recoiled at his words. “Lower your blow, would you?”

“I'll try to.”

“Thanks.”

I snatched my keys off the side table and walked to the door, I gestured him out the door and into the living room. “I have great news for my husband if you don't mind.”

“You're married?” Four arched his brow.

“Is that so hard to believe?”

“Not after I found you yesterday. What news?”

“Well, it's none of your business so there's no need to tell you.”

“That's a lower blow. Ouch.”

The stranger was taking all of my time and so I walked out first, he followed me when he saw I wasn't in the mood for games.

“Get in,” I said when the door locks clicked open. “I'll drop you off at the estate gate.”

Four got into the passenger’s side. He grabbed the belt and sat patiently.

I started the engine, “Before anything else, I just wanted to say thank you. I'm not always like this…. Actually, I'm never like this, I was just having a breakdown and I could… I didn't know… I was just…”

I lost the words to fill in what I meant and so I stopped trying. Four nodded. “I understand. I'm just glad you're happy and safe.”

“Thanks.” My mouth twisted into a widened grin as the car pulled out of the driveway and into the street.

As soon as I let out Four, I was already on the highway headed to Jason's house.

“I can't believe I'm having a baby.” My lips grew wider, and my teeth flashed proudly at my reflection in the mirror. “I guess I'm not as barren as I thought.”

My fingers gripped the steering wheel tightly as I hastened my pace. When I was almost by Jason's house, I stopped by to get flowers.

A ‘Getting back together/ I'm pregnant’ gift.

Some flowers and chocolate. Knowing Jason, I knew he would take one good look at me and fall on his knees again, confessing his love to me.

“Wow, that's a lot of flowers,’ the florist said, her eyes wide. “Any specific occasion?”

“Thanks. I'm about to apologise to my husband.”

She took a whiff at me. “Wow. I'll say this. If I were your husband and you apologised to me with this many flowers, I would get you a diamond ring again and ask you to renew your wedding vows with me.”

“Gee! Thanks!” I didn't stop grinning while I slipped my card to her. “I hope he feels the same way.”

“Trust me, sis. There is no guy on earth who wouldn't say yes, I forgive you to these many flowers and a kiss. I mean, come on, you're beautiful and you've got a great head on your head.”

She packed the flowers into a bag and handed me a thank-you note. “I really hope you have a nice day.”

“Thank you.”

“You're welcome.”

I swerved into Jason's gate blasting a love song at the highest volume.

‘I will always remember….’

‘The day you kissed my lips… light as a feather… and it went just like this…’

Yes. That love song.

I caught the curtains upstairs but I couldn't tell if it was Jason or a maid.

Either way, I grabbed the flowers from the back seat and took the chocolate right out of the bag, singing that love song at the top of my voice.

“Jason, honey!” I screamed. “If you're hearing this, please come out.”

Nothing.

No one stepped out.

“Jason, bear. My baby honey, my pudding.”

Silence returned to me, left with the blasting echoes of the song that played in the background.

I started to breathe uneasily when I called the third time and he didn't answer, that's when I neared his door.

One knock.

A second and then a third, yet, Jason didn't answer.

I found the spare keys right in the flower pot we'd left them in years ago.

I pushed it into the lock and jangled them hard. The door creaked open before I stepped in.

“Jason?” I whispered, hoping the reason he hadn't called was because he wasn't home.

Oh, what a fool I was.

As my eyes adjusted to the dim light in the living room, I found the very man I was calling all the while, locked with his lips in Rhea’s mouth.

“JASON!” I screamed as the flowers fell to the floor and felt something shift in me.

If I weren't just newly pregnant, I could have sworn my water broke…

The headlights dimmed as we drove into the parking space. The car engine died next, inside quieted and not long after, I heard a sob from Veronica’s side of the car.“You're crying.”She didn't speak, her hand covered her face, and her shoulders shivered.“Your father.” I waited. “Did he hurt you?”“No.” She sighed. “He spoke calmly to me.”“I don't believe you.”The brightness in her eyes dimmed, her usual excitement was lost now, “He just told me to come home.”“Come home and you're crying. You sound like you live in hell.”“I don't.”“Well, those tears sound like they're different to me, little wonder why.”She didn't speak again, all she did was breathe, exhale, release and then wipe her eyes again. “It's crazy how our lives work, isn't it?”When the dust settled and the air wasn't as tight as it was before, I picked the locks and came over to her side of the door.“Come.” I stretched my hand forward, “You've had enough for today, you should get some rest.”She took my hand, jumpe

Veronica's POV. My phone beeped at the very moment father bounced off his chair.I squinted to the side, my attention to the screen for a second. I saw Four's name blinking, I gasped.“Father, I have to leave.” I stood up too, sliding beyond the table and chair, I slid out of place and straightened my spine when I could stand better.“Where— why— are you going?”“Away from you. I'm already going through so much, I can't bear to have more on my cup.”“Don't you dare move an inch, Veronica! Especially when I'm still talking to you.”Oh, but I didn't listen. I moved before he could complete his words, carried my purse and phone from the table I sat on. I stopped some feet away from him.“I'm sorry, father.” My voice was tiny, I hoped he would understand, how sincere I was when I asked that he forgive me. “I didn't mean for this to happen but I really need to go.”“You do?” his eyebrows tugged at each other. “Vee, you can't do this to us, you can't expect that your mother and I will have

Father followed inside the mall. “Let's find a comfortable spot to sit,” he suggested. I know he meant moving back to my house or wherever I was laying my head.I said no.“Let's have some ice cream here instead,” I suggested too..We walked into the creamery, Father picked a spot, he helped me into my side, the shallow table bumped onto my knees on my way in. He held the ached spot, blew on it and asked me to take it easy.“You've already been in so much pain already, my heart can't bear to see you in more.”“Thanks Daddy.” I landed on the soft cushion couch, father made sure I was already settled before he took a seat beside me. His knees bumped into the table too but Father didn't make a fuss.“So… before I go get you your favourite ice cream, I want to ask you just one thing.”My chest tightened. Had to be the same question I was avoiding all this time.“What's that, daddy?”“Where—” he coughed, old age was telling on him. “Where do you stay now?”“I…”Mr Mark wouldn't apprecia

Veronica's POV.My father, Mr Mark was not one to be played with.Especially when it came to things of this nature.Marriage.Commitment, childbirth and the like.Father hated a broken home even more than he hated the devil and I couldn't blame him. Who would blame a man who had been in love with his wife for so long?I sighed deeply while I thought about it. Dad wouldn't understand… I thought, not all of us are lucky to be together forever with the first people we are in love with.“Sometimes parents can say horrible things to us but that shouldn't weigh you down. You'll be fine.” Four’s words penetrated deep into my skull.I nodded casually, not paying much attention to him.It wasn't the new words I was worried about. If at all, my father would say anything mean…No, it wasn't that. It was the look on his face when he was back home, in the quiet silence of his study, away from my mother and every other noise. It was the way I knew he would lower his head, the way his breath would g

Veronica's PoV. The next day was a different ball game all together. As much as I tried my very best not to think of Four in that manner, I couldn't resist him.I was on the dining table again with a cereal box this time, pouring over some milk into my bowl when he strolled in.“Someone looks like they had a nice rest.” I noticed him first, just to show I wasn't so slow. I could be ‘dangerous’ too.I could speak in a deep British voice too, sound fancy and mysterious. That type of thing…“I didn't sleep.” His voice was sharp and clear.“Why?”“I don't sleep.”“Oh “ I echoed a quiet hum through my throat. It was meant to only be heard by me but it wasn't. Four noticed my displeasure.“I assume you slept well, didn't you?”“I did.” “That's great.”“Is it?”“It should be.” He looked away from my face, his vision caught the bowl I carried. “You want cereal? I was planning something else.”The pregnancy cravings hit harder than I expected, much more than I imagined. They came with an ach

Veronica’s POV. The word seduce lingered in my head long after it formed, heavy and sharp like a blade. I didn't yet know how to wield. It didn't feel right. Not because I didn't want him— I did, painfully so— but because seduction implied strategy.Calculation.A game of advantage and upper hand. And nothing about what existed between Four and me felt like a game.I lay curled on the couch, the blanket still draped around my shoulders, staring at a point on the ceiling I couldn’t truly see. The apartment hummed with quiet life—the distant sound of traffic outside, the soft tick of the wall clock, the almost imperceptible shift of air whenever Four moved. He was by the window again.Of course he was.Four didn’t idle. He didn’t linger without purpose. Even standing still, he radiated readiness, like a coiled wire waiting for tension to snap. The city lights spilt faintly across his face, catching sharp edges of bone and shadow, and I wondered—not for the first time—how someone coul
