Chapter 2

Author: Daphne
Three days later, Claire came back from her trip.

She came through the door pulling a brand-new suitcase, her skin sun-kissed and her face relaxed from the trip. She waved a small paper bag at me.

"I got you something."

It was a postcard of Santorini's blue-domed church, its corners carefully folded and the scent of sea air still clinging to it. Smiling, she said she had seen it in a souvenir shop and immediately thought of me.

I took it, thanked her quietly, and ran my fingers over the cool paper. I felt nothing.

At dinner Victoria mentioned something offhand that broke the quiet at the table.

"Funny thing, Logan brought me the exact same postcard this morning. He said a friend picked it up for him in Greece."

Claire's knife and fork froze in midair. She looked up at me, testing, clearly waiting for me to question her, to care, to get jealous and twisted up about it as I always had.

I just looked down and kept cutting the roast chicken on my plate, my voice level. "Souvenirs from places everyone posts about all look the same. It's normal."

If anything, my calm only made her face fall further.

Halfway through the meal, she said in a carefully casual tone, "Once school starts, I'm going to change my major to art history."

Before, that would have thrown me into a panic. I knew her gift was art and that she hated the tedium of coding, but I had selfishly told myself that as long as we were in the same school and the same city, nothing could come between us.

But this time I did not try to hold her back, and I was not thinking of myself. I said it plainly, "Then switch. What matters is doing what you love."

James nodded first, and Victoria smiled and agreed, saying she had known for years that Claire had real talent for drawing and that it suited her far better than grinding away at code.

Claire was the only one not smiling. She stared at me, her voice cooling, resentment buried just under it. "You're very generous all of a sudden."

"It's your life and your choice," I said calmly.

She set down her knife and fork and lowered her voice, unwilling to let the comparison go. "Logan never gives me polished little speeches like that. If he wants something, he just comes out and says it."

I said nothing. There was no point defending myself anymore.

Soon after, her phone lit up with a voice message from Logan. A range hood roared in the background beneath his helpless laugh.

"Claire, help. I burned the ribs to charcoal and filled the kitchen with smoke."

Claire was on her feet almost instantly, grabbing the car keys from the hall table without a second thought.

Victoria asked where she was going. Claire did not slow down. "Logan can't cook. I'm going to check on him."

The door clicked shut, and the house went quiet. I looked down at the bandage on my left hand, covering the cut I had given myself while chopping vegetables a few days earlier. The cut had bled badly.

I had called to her from the kitchen and asked her to grab some gauze from the first-aid kit. She had not even looked up. "Ethan, you're not a kid. You can handle it yourself."

Of course I knew how to handle a cut. I always had.

I just wanted, in that moment, to find out where exactly Logan and I stood in her mind.

The answer was blunt and cruel, and it took no digging at all.

Half an hour later, Logan posted on Instagram. In the photo, Claire wore his gray apron and bent to dump a tray of burned ribs into the trash, looking perfectly at ease.

The caption was cocky and suggestive: "my best friend's girl, obviously."

The comments filled with teasing about whether they were together. Logan soon denied it himself: "Don't start. She's going to marry my best friend."

It looked like he was drawing a line. In fact, every word of it announced to the world that whatever he and Claire had, nobody else could get in between.

I closed the app and opened the account from ten years ahead.

I typed slowly: "If that person had stepped aside from the beginning, would the two of you have been happy?"

After a long wait, my phone buzzed once.

It was one short line, and it stopped my breathing.

"At least I wouldn't keep dreaming that he died."

I stared at that line. My fingers went cold and the chill rolling up from my chest took over my whole body.

So the version of me ten years from now had not merely been abandoned. He had met a far more brutal, desperate end.

I screenshotted the conversation and saved it to a locked album. Outside, the night had deepened and the wind had turned cool. Normally, no matter how late it got, Claire would text to ask whether I had taken my medication and changed my dressing on time.

But that night she never came home, and there was not a single word from her.

After dinner, Claire stopped me at the living room door."Give me ten minutes," she said. "There are things I have to tell you myself."Ivy glanced at me and said quietly that she would go watch television with Margaret. She did not make the decision for me, and she did not use her own worry to pull me away. That left Claire and me alone in the living room. She started with the Reddit post ten years back, then the drink Logan had tampered with in the old timeline, then all the ways she had avoided, wavered, and let things slide. She did not skip the engagement party, and she did not call that shove in the parking lot an accident."I know he showed your grandmother that video, and I know you didn't simply lose your mind." Her voice shook. "But none of that erases what I did."When she finished, the tears finally came."In this life, I didn't have you committed, and I didn't cause your grandmother's death. Logan has been punished. Ethan, can we start over?"I looked at her and said nothi

I saw Claire's message during our layover in Amsterdam.Ethan, have a safe flight.I replied, "Thank you," then told her I would change my number once we reached Leiden. If James or Victoria needed anything, they could email me. There was no reason for her to contact me directly again. After sending it, I cut up the old SIM card and dropped the pieces into a recycling bin at the airport.Leiden was rainy, but Margaret loved it. She said the wind off the canals swept old memories out of a person's heart and reminded you that you did not have to stay trapped where you started. After finishing the engineering program, I accepted an internship at a climate-tech company in Amsterdam. During my first year, I helped develop an urban heat-warning system. As the project neared completion, the Portland office offered me a more senior role and better pay. That email sat on my computer for a long time.Going back meant familiar resources and faster promotion. It also meant stepping back into the l

The first thing Claire did after waking was not go to the airport but find Logan. She asked him to meet at a coffee shop near campus. Logan came fast, as if he had been waiting for her to reach out, and the moment he sat down he asked whether she was falling apart because Ethan had left so suddenly.Claire looked at the burn scar on his right hand, and images from the next ten years flashed through her mind."We're done," she said. "Don't contact me again."Logan's smile stalled for a moment, then his voice went gentle. "Claire, Ethan's gone. There's nobody left to perform for.""I'm not performing.""So you regret it?" He leaned back in his chair, unable to keep the irritation out of his voice. "You said it yourself, being with him made you feel like you couldn't breathe."Claire did not explain. She got up and left, and blocked his number.A few days later, the photography club's welcome party went ahead as planned. Claire had not wanted to go, but she refused to surrender the rest o

The Claire in that future did not believe I had killed myself. She demanded an independent autopsy. Logan showed real impatience for the first time, but he forced it down and tried to dissuade her. "Ethan had a hard enough time while he was alive. Don't let people pick him apart now that he's dead."That was what prompted Claire to hire Rachel Monroe, a medical malpractice attorney. When the medical examiner pulled back the sheet, she could barely stand.Besides the injuries from the fall, there were restraint bruises on my wrists, needle marks up my arms from repeated injections, and older injuries missing from my medical chart. The marks showed that I had never received proper care at the facility.Rachel requested the medication records, staff schedules, and cloud backups of the security footage. The facility refused at first, then offered a large settlement in exchange for a confidentiality agreement and her promise not to disclose the details. The Harts urged caution. James said I

By the time Claire reached Portland International Airport, the flight to Amsterdam was already in the air.She stood beneath the departures board and called me over and over. A recorded message told her the number had been disconnected. Her finger froze above the screen, and even breathing became difficult. In the next second, memories that were not hers slammed into her head. She saw our engagement party ten years in the future. She saw me kneeling among scattered paper flowers, pulling off the ring and begging her not to withdraw the financial guarantee for Margaret's surgery. She saw herself beside Logan, hearing every word and turning away anyway.Claire's legs gave out and she dropped to the floor. It was not a dream. It was the life she would have lived. In the old timeline I never went to Leiden. I stayed in Oregon, moved her into her dorm, fixed her broken desk lamp, and walked halfway across campus to buy her hot chocolate when she complained about the dining hall coffee.Clai

With one month left before our departure, Claire finally cornered me in the visa center parking lot.Logan's car was parked behind her. Days of distance had worn through her patience. There was none of her usual smile left, only confusion and anger."How long are you going to sulk?"I stopped and looked back at her calmly. "I'm not sulking. I've just figured out which road I'm taking.""Then why don't you answer my texts, get ready for school with me, or even come over for dinner?" Her words came faster and faster, her voice climbing. "We grew up together. After all these years, how can you push everyone away over some misunderstanding you won't even explain?"I looked at her steadily and named the truth at the center of it. "It isn't a misunderstanding. I finally understand. You never wanted a life planned for you, and you wanted me even less because obligation was all that tied us together."Claire froze. The accusation in her eyes vanished.Logan strolled over, still playing the gen
