Chapter 3

Author: Daphne
I did not sleep. I lay awake until the sky turned pale.

At four in the morning, the account from ten years ahead was still online, the avatar gone gray but the status light steady. In the end, I could not hold back the question I feared most: "How did I die?"

She was silent for a long time, long enough that I thought she would not answer. Just as I was about to give up, the messages came through one after another, like a final verdict handed down from the future, every word aimed at the heart.

She wrote that at the engagement party, she admitted in front of everyone that the person she loved was Logan. She controlled the financial guarantee for my grandmother's surgery and used it to force me to end the engagement myself. With nowhere else to turn, I removed the ring and begged her not to withdraw the money keeping my grandmother alive.

Afterward, Logan went alone to Margaret's assisted-living community with an engagement invitation. During their conversation, he brought up my split from Claire, every word meant to wound. Margaret's heart was already weak. She went into cardiac arrest and could not be revived.

I was certain Logan had provoked her deliberately and I went after him to have it out. While we were arguing in the parking lot, Claire, thinking only of protecting Logan, shoved me hard. A delivery truck was backing in at that moment. I could not get out of the way and it knocked me to the ground.

After the accident, I became violent, raw, and uncontrollable. I screamed, broke things, and sat all day clutching Margaret's old photographs and staring into space, no longer the person I had been.

Logan took advantage of it. Under the pretense of protecting me and everyone around me, he persuaded Claire to file a danger-to-self petition with the hospital, the sworn statement that opens the door to involuntary commitment.

A month later, Claire got the call: I had fallen in a stairwell at the behavioral health facility and died at the scene.

The last message was all she had left to give.

"If you're still alive right now, take Margaret and go. Don't wait for me. Don't let it happen again."

Dawn flooded the room, but it did nothing to warm me. I did not hesitate. That morning, I went straight to the assisted-living community.

Margaret was on the balcony, carefully watering a pot of mint. When she saw my bloodshot eyes and exhausted face, she set down the watering can at once. "You didn't sleep at all? Look at your eyes."

I stood in front of her with everything I had rehearsed all night stuck in my throat. After a long silence I steadied my voice. "Grandma, I got a full ride to Leiden University. I want to go study in the Netherlands."

She did not interrupt. She waited for the rest.

"I want to take you with me. Not for a trip. I mean moving there for good. I've looked into apartments, health insurance, and elder care. Everything checks out. Don't worry about money. The scholarship covers our expenses, and I'll work part-time around classes."

She never once asked about Claire, or the Harts, or why I was suddenly leaving the only place I had lived for more than a decade. She only looked at me gently and brushed my cheek with her hand, her eyes full of patience and ache.

"Wherever you are is home for me."

Everything I had held down all night collapsed at once, and my eyes burned. I dropped my gaze, forced back a sob, and swallowed a night's worth of hurt and lingering fear before telling her the rest of my decision.

"Grandma, I'm not going to marry Claire."

Margaret answered without a second of hesitation, "Then don't. You don't owe your life to an arrangement other people made."

On my way out of the assisted-living community, I ran into Logan and Claire in the parking lot.

Logan was leaning against the car, loose and unbothered, and raised a hand to greet me as if nothing were wrong, his smile open and easy. Claire stood next to him with obvious impatience and anger on her face.

"Ethan," she said with a frown, accusation sharpening her voice, "how long are you going to keep acting distant and sulky?"

Logan took a step forward, still playing the peacemaker. "Man, if there's been a misunderstanding, take it up with me. Don't punish Claire for it."

My eyes went to Logan's right index finger, where a fresh bandage was stuck. A second later, Claire instinctively stepped closer and took his hand, anxiously asking whether he had hurt himself again.

Her attention belonged entirely to Logan. Her concern for him, her obvious preference, was painful to watch.

Only when she noticed the thick bandage on my palm, soaked through with blood, did she seem to remember me. Her gaze went rigid with surprise.

"Your hand. Why hasn't it healed?"

"It will," I said, flat, neither sad nor glad.

She opened her mouth as if to explain something, to patch something over, but I had stopped wanting to hear thin excuses.

"From now on, if you need something, please go through James and Victoria."

The color drained out of Claire's face, disbelief all through her eyes. "What is that supposed to mean?"

"It means we don't need to go out of our way to stay close anymore."

The smile finally faded off Logan's face. Claire stared at me as if she were realizing for the first time that I really did intend to leave, and that I would not be coming back.

I said nothing more, turned, and walked away without looking back.

That afternoon Margaret signed the lease transfer papers with a steady hand, and the move was settled.

My escape was no longer a passing thought. It was a fact.

After dinner, Claire stopped me at the living room door."Give me ten minutes," she said. "There are things I have to tell you myself."Ivy glanced at me and said quietly that she would go watch television with Margaret. She did not make the decision for me, and she did not use her own worry to pull me away. That left Claire and me alone in the living room. She started with the Reddit post ten years back, then the drink Logan had tampered with in the old timeline, then all the ways she had avoided, wavered, and let things slide. She did not skip the engagement party, and she did not call that shove in the parking lot an accident."I know he showed your grandmother that video, and I know you didn't simply lose your mind." Her voice shook. "But none of that erases what I did."When she finished, the tears finally came."In this life, I didn't have you committed, and I didn't cause your grandmother's death. Logan has been punished. Ethan, can we start over?"I looked at her and said nothi

I saw Claire's message during our layover in Amsterdam.Ethan, have a safe flight.I replied, "Thank you," then told her I would change my number once we reached Leiden. If James or Victoria needed anything, they could email me. There was no reason for her to contact me directly again. After sending it, I cut up the old SIM card and dropped the pieces into a recycling bin at the airport.Leiden was rainy, but Margaret loved it. She said the wind off the canals swept old memories out of a person's heart and reminded you that you did not have to stay trapped where you started. After finishing the engineering program, I accepted an internship at a climate-tech company in Amsterdam. During my first year, I helped develop an urban heat-warning system. As the project neared completion, the Portland office offered me a more senior role and better pay. That email sat on my computer for a long time.Going back meant familiar resources and faster promotion. It also meant stepping back into the l

The first thing Claire did after waking was not go to the airport but find Logan. She asked him to meet at a coffee shop near campus. Logan came fast, as if he had been waiting for her to reach out, and the moment he sat down he asked whether she was falling apart because Ethan had left so suddenly.Claire looked at the burn scar on his right hand, and images from the next ten years flashed through her mind."We're done," she said. "Don't contact me again."Logan's smile stalled for a moment, then his voice went gentle. "Claire, Ethan's gone. There's nobody left to perform for.""I'm not performing.""So you regret it?" He leaned back in his chair, unable to keep the irritation out of his voice. "You said it yourself, being with him made you feel like you couldn't breathe."Claire did not explain. She got up and left, and blocked his number.A few days later, the photography club's welcome party went ahead as planned. Claire had not wanted to go, but she refused to surrender the rest o

The Claire in that future did not believe I had killed myself. She demanded an independent autopsy. Logan showed real impatience for the first time, but he forced it down and tried to dissuade her. "Ethan had a hard enough time while he was alive. Don't let people pick him apart now that he's dead."That was what prompted Claire to hire Rachel Monroe, a medical malpractice attorney. When the medical examiner pulled back the sheet, she could barely stand.Besides the injuries from the fall, there were restraint bruises on my wrists, needle marks up my arms from repeated injections, and older injuries missing from my medical chart. The marks showed that I had never received proper care at the facility.Rachel requested the medication records, staff schedules, and cloud backups of the security footage. The facility refused at first, then offered a large settlement in exchange for a confidentiality agreement and her promise not to disclose the details. The Harts urged caution. James said I

By the time Claire reached Portland International Airport, the flight to Amsterdam was already in the air.She stood beneath the departures board and called me over and over. A recorded message told her the number had been disconnected. Her finger froze above the screen, and even breathing became difficult. In the next second, memories that were not hers slammed into her head. She saw our engagement party ten years in the future. She saw me kneeling among scattered paper flowers, pulling off the ring and begging her not to withdraw the financial guarantee for Margaret's surgery. She saw herself beside Logan, hearing every word and turning away anyway.Claire's legs gave out and she dropped to the floor. It was not a dream. It was the life she would have lived. In the old timeline I never went to Leiden. I stayed in Oregon, moved her into her dorm, fixed her broken desk lamp, and walked halfway across campus to buy her hot chocolate when she complained about the dining hall coffee.Clai

With one month left before our departure, Claire finally cornered me in the visa center parking lot.Logan's car was parked behind her. Days of distance had worn through her patience. There was none of her usual smile left, only confusion and anger."How long are you going to sulk?"I stopped and looked back at her calmly. "I'm not sulking. I've just figured out which road I'm taking.""Then why don't you answer my texts, get ready for school with me, or even come over for dinner?" Her words came faster and faster, her voice climbing. "We grew up together. After all these years, how can you push everyone away over some misunderstanding you won't even explain?"I looked at her steadily and named the truth at the center of it. "It isn't a misunderstanding. I finally understand. You never wanted a life planned for you, and you wanted me even less because obligation was all that tied us together."Claire froze. The accusation in her eyes vanished.Logan strolled over, still playing the gen
