Chapter 3

Author: Wild Lady
Ginny's POV

On Wednesday, after I had finished handing off the last of my assignments, I started packing my personal belongings.

The director suddenly summoned me into the meeting room. The shortlist for the market's latest designs was already up on the large screen.

"Ginny, did you submit these designs yourself?"

The director tossed a file over to me. I flipped it open and was greeted by a cover I knew all too well.

I had spent countless late nights working on that same set of designs last month. The key visual, color palette, and layout were exactly the same.

However, the credit for those designs went to Ivy Studio, which was where Martha worked.

"No."

The director frowned. "We were going to submit these designs next month. Now that there's an overlap in the designs, our legal department is already looking into the timelines. Did you ever show your designs to anyone else?"

I stood in the meeting room. Even though it was the height of summer, I suddenly felt cold all over.

At night, the moment I got home, I set the file on the coffee table. "Martha, did you submit this design?"

Martha was leaning against the couch, biting into an apple. The moment she saw the file, she went still.

"Ginny… Where did you get that from?"

"I'm asking if you submitted it."

"I did." Martha set the apple aside, her voice growing softer.

"I just wanted to give it a go. I never thought it'd get shortlisted. Ginny, did I mess things up?" she asked, her eyes already turning red.

Gavin brought over a plate of grapes he had just rinsed. He glanced at the file on the coffee table before looking up at me. His voice was far calmer than I had expected.

"It's just a set of designs, right? You don't have to scare Martha like that."

"Gavin, this project is already in the works at my company. The legal department's already investigating it."

"I'm a designer too. Do you really think I don't get what's going on?" Gavin sat beside Martha and pushed the plate of grapes toward her.

"Your company's huge. How could one design from the shortlist even affect you?"

Ethan leaned against the wall and chimed in, "That's right, Ginny. I'm sure your company has plenty of projects lined up. You should let Martha get something out of this."

"Seriously? But I worked so many late nights over the past month to finish those designs."

All they cared about was whether it would hurt my company. They never considered that all the hard work I had poured into those designs had just gone down the drain.

Ethan smiled. "Look at you. There you go. You always have to make a big deal out of everything."

Bryan was the last one to get back.

The moment he walked in and saw everyone gathered together, he noticed the file on the coffee table. He immediately understood what was up.

Bryan didn't even bother looking at me. He glanced at Martha first. "What are you crying for? Ginny won't hold it against you."

He took his time hanging up his coat before coming over and sitting next to me.

"Ginny, don't hold it against Martha."

I turned to look at Bryan. "So you think it's my fault too?"

Bryan chuckled and shook his head, speaking more gently. "That's not what I meant. What I'm trying to say is, you don't have to take it this far."

Martha came over to me at the right moment and took my arm, her voice trembling with tears. "Ginny, I'm sorry. I didn't think things would end up this way.

"I saw those designs on your table and assumed you didn't want them anymore, so I thought I could try submitting them and give it a go."

As she explained herself, tears started spilling down her cheeks.

Gavin immediately scowled. "Look at what you've done. Did you have to make Martha cry?"

Ethan tried to smooth things over. "There, there. You're cousins. Don't let something like this come between you."

Bryan reached for some tissue and handed it to Martha. "Here, wipe your tears. Ginny didn't mean it that way."

Everyone was trying to comfort Martha.

No one asked if my director had given me a hard time. No one cared how I felt during those few minutes in the meeting room. No one cared how hard I'd worked that month.

I suddenly felt drained. I was so tired that I didn't even have the energy to confront them.

  • I'll Quit Before They Tell Me To   Chapter 9

Ginny's POVLater, I heard that Ethan, Bryan, Gavin, and Martha gradually moved out of that shared apartment, one by one. From time to time, I would receive their texts. During the holidays, Gavin would text me. "Happy holidays! Do take care of yourself."Martha would send a picture of her latest designs. "Ginny, I hope I can be as good as you one day."Bryan never asked to get back together. From time to time, he would ask, "How have you been doing lately?"Sometimes, I would reply to them, but when I got busy, it would slip my mind. One day, Ethan came to Lokville on a business trip, and he asked me out to dinner. I met with him. Ethan looked tanner than the last time I had seen him, and he remembered to order my favorite cheese tacos for dinner. Our meal lasted for a very long time. Neither of us was in a hurry to leave. Halfway through our meal, he set his spoon down. "Ginny, I've always wanted to apologize to you.""What made you bring that up all of a sudden?"E

Ginny's POVI was doing well in Lokville. I liked my new environment too. From time to time, I would get a message or a call from Ethan, Gavin, Martha, or Bryan. Sometimes, they would apologize. Other times, they were just checking in to see how I was doing. Occasionally, they would reflect on what they had done. I chose to ignore them all. One morning, I was busy working on a new design when the receptionist, Jessica Jenkins, knocked on the glass door to my office. "Ginny, there are two people downstairs looking for you. One of them is your older brother, and the other… is your boyfriend."I stopped drawing for a moment. "Have them wait in the conference room. I'll see them once I'm done here."Ten minutes later, I pushed open the door to the conference room. Gavin was on the couch, while Bryan stood by the window. When they saw me walk in, they both straightened up. "Ginny…" Bryan spoke first, his voice slightly hoarse. "You've… You've lost weight."I sat on the couch

Third-Person POVOn Sunday morning, Kimberly arrived at the shared apartment Ginny used to share with Bryan, Gavin, Ethan, and Martha. It was Martha who opened the door for her. The moment Kimberly entered the apartment, she saw everyone doing their own thing around the apartment. Gavin was smoking on the balcony, Ethan was playing video games, and Bryan was sitting at the dining table, looking miserable. Ginny's chat was still open on Bryan's phone. He tried calling her several times yesterday, but she hadn't answered them at all. "Good morning. I'm Ginny's colleague. I'm here to pick up her things." Kimberly stood in the entryway, holding a stack of cardboard boxes. Gavin froze. "You're here to pick up her things? What do you mean?""As I said, I'm here to pick up Ginny's things. Didn't she tell you?" Kimberly asked as she walked farther into the apartment, making a beeline for Ginny's room door. "She asked me to ship her things to Lokville."Ethan, Bryan, Gavin, and M

Ginny's POVThe plane landed in Lokville at 10:00 pm. I had just turned on my phone. Before I could even process what was happening, it started buzzing with message after message. The first message that popped up was from Gavin. "@Ginny Are you off work yet? We're waiting to have dinner with you."Where did you even go? You didn't tell us where you were going. None of us have been able to reach you!"Then I got a message from Ethan. "Where are you? Are you still mad at us? Come on. It's not that serious. We just prepared a feast for you."The next message was from Martha. "Ginny, I'm sorry. This is all my fault. Please don't hold it against them. Don't be mad at us."The last message was from Bryan. "Ginny, where are you? Can you please reply?"After reading through their messages, I exited the chat and placed my phone face down on my lap. I didn't reply to any of them. The taxi raced through the streets of Lokville in the night, neon lights flashing one after another.I le

Third-Person POVBryan, Ethan, Gavin, and Martha were all home by 6:00 pm. The table was piled high with all sorts of ingredients. It looked more elaborate than a Christmas dinner. Martha took out some cheese tacos from a bag. "Ginny loves these, so I picked them up for her on the way here."As Ethan reached for the chicken wings on the table, Bryan quickly reminded him. "Her stomach's pretty sensitive. Don't make them spicy."So they decided to make garlic parmesan chicken wings instead. Gavin took out Ginny's favorite bottle of yogurt from the fridge and set it right in the middle of the table. The four of them had spent the last two days planning this dinner, hoping to make it up to her. "What time does Ginny usually get home?"Bryan glanced at his phone. "About 7:00 pm. It's 6:40 pm now. She should be home soon."By 7:00 pm, Ginny still wasn't home.Gavin sent a message in the group chat. "@Ginny Are you off work yet? We're waiting to have dinner with you."But there w

  • I'll Quit Before They Tell Me To   Chapter 4

Ginny's POVI picked up Bryan's phone from the table. He hadn't locked his phone, and he never did. He had once said, "You can always check my phone. I have nothing to hide from you."The screen lit up, and his WhatsApp was already open. The chat pinned at the top was called "Operation Martha". Four people were in the group, and I wasn't one of them.Bryan tried to stop me, but I had already opened the chat. I scrolled up and went through the messages one by one. There was a conversation from last Tuesday around 9:00 am. Bryan: "The designs on her desk are really good. They've been there for days, and she hasn't touched them since."Gavin: "Martha, you've always wanted to have your designs shortlisted, right? Why don't you submit them? I'm sure you'll get selected."Martha: "Really? But what if Ginny finds out?"Gavin: "She hasn't looked at them in days. She probably doesn't even need them anymore."Ethan: "Haha! I can't believe we're doing this behind her back."Bryan: "But
