Chapter 2 The Man in the Photograph

Author: Existence
The next morning, I took a cab to Camille's company.

The moment I walked through the doors, there was no sign of any data-leak crisis.

The receptionist was busy inflating balloons, while the conference room was piled high with champagne and flowers. They were clearly setting up for a celebration.

Nora wasn't at her desk.

One of the new employees, completely unaware of who I was, walked past carrying a stack of supplies.

Mistaking me for someone from another department, she casually remarked, "What are you standing around for? Come and help out. Mr. Ashbourne just got back from overseas after landing such a huge investment for the company. It's only fair that Ms. Everhart tags along on a vacation with him so they can both unwind. I heard they knew each other back in college. How romantic."

I continued farther into the office. At the end of the hallway, I spotted a new photograph on the company's display wall.

Camille stood in the middle of a press conference in a sharp business suit, shoulder to shoulder with a man in a tailored suit.

Beneath the photo, the caption read, "Reunited After Ten Years, Renewing the Dream That Started It All."

The man was Cedric Ashbourne. Yet, Camille had never once mentioned him to me.

I pulled out my phone and had just taken a picture of the display when hurried footsteps sounded behind me.

"Tristan? What are you doing here?" Nora came running over, breathless. She immediately stepped in front of the wall, forcing a stiff smile. "Didn't Camille say you were staying at home to rest? Things are a mess around here…"

"Who is Cedric?" I asked, looking at her.

She gulped. "He is the investor's representative. Tristan, don't get the wrong idea. We didn't make the data crisis public because we didn't want the employees to panic. The higher-ups are all trying to figure out a solution."

"A primary data leak that even the head of technology didn't know about, huh?"

I held my phone up in front of her. On it was the photo she'd sent to the group chat last night.

"So, you needed to use a month-old photo to deceive me?"

Nora's expression froze, and she was unable to speak.

Just then, the front doors opened. Camille walked in, and the moment she saw me, her expression shifted.

But what caught my eye was the faint red mark visible at her collarbone beneath her half-unbuttoned shirt.

Nora looked as though she'd been granted a reprieve. She hurriedly told Camille that I'd misunderstood what was going on between her and Cedric.

Camille grabbed my wrist and pulled me into her office.

"Tristan, this is a workplace, not somewhere you come to track your wife's whereabouts."

I gave a cold, humorless smile. "If I hadn't looked into it, I would've missed my own wife having a candlelit dinner with another man in a luxury underwater suite."

Camille froze, and her composure cracked for a moment.

Then, incredibly, she turned around and blamed me instead.

"I didn't tell you because I knew you'd react exactly like this. Cedric is just an investor. The underwater suite was the accommodation the other party specifically requested. I was only there to discuss the financing. Can't you be reasonable for once?"

"Did discussing financing require him to wear the bracelet I'd gotten?"

I pulled my wrist free from her grasp.

A flicker of panic crossed Camille's eyes, but she quickly concealed it.

"The bracelet was just in my bag. Cedric happened to see it and thought it looked nice, so I lent it to him for a quick photo. That's all."

She straightened her collar. "Are you really going to jeopardize my work over a piece of jewelry?"

She thought this was nothing more than a problem over the bracelet.

I didn't argue. Instead, I turned and headed for the door.

But as I turned, my eyes swept across Camille's desk. Buried beneath a messy stack of documents was a black-and-gold hotel key-card sleeve.

On the back, in Camille's handwriting, were the words, "I owe you the underwater suite and ten whole years. This time, I'll make it up for both."

Cedric is in prison, and I've gotten the company back on track."She looked up at me, her eyes filled with fragile, pleading hope."Can you give me one more chance? Please. We can start over. This time, I'll do whatever you want. We'll go to Norhaven. We'll travel the world…"I looked down at the glittering diamond ring, realizing how absurd it all was."Camille, do

Three days later, Camille received my divorce papers at the office.Along with them came a court order freezing marital assets.I hadn't held back. I'd hired a lawyer to freeze the bank accounts in Camille's name that were considered marital property, along with part of her stake in the company. At two that afternoon, Camille stormed into my apartment. Her eyes were bloodshot, and she clutched the divorce papers so tightly they'd been crumpled. The immaculate business suit she usually wore was wrinkled and disheveled."Tristan, I can't believe you got a lawyer to go through my accounts! Have you really decided to throw away every last bit of consideration you had for me?"She slammed the papers onto the coffee table, her voice hoarse.I sat on the couch and took a sip of coffee."When you secretly booked an underwater suite for Cedric, did you think about how I'd feel?""I told you, I did it to secure the funding!"She ran a hand through her hair, her face twisted with anguis

It had been five days since I sent Camille the divorce agreement, and she still hadn't signed it.She had her assistant send me flowers, bring me food, and even bought two new tickets to Norhaven.I returned everything.…On Friday afternoon, I went back to our old home to retrieve the last of my documents. When I opened the door, Cedric was sitting in the living room. He was wearing my slippers, with my mug placed in front of him.Camille was on the balcony, making a phone call. The moment she saw me walk in, she hung up."Cedric's hotel had a guest information leak, so it's not safe for him to stay there right now. I asked him to stay in the guest room for a couple of days."She said it so naturally, as if we hadn't even discussed getting divorced.Cedric stood up. "Tristan, Camille said you haven't been coming home lately. I'm only staying for two nights.""This is our marital home." I looked at Camille. "Have him leave."She furrowed her brows. I moved into a friend's vacant apartment for the time being. The next day, my lawyer sent Camille the divorce papers. She didn't respond.…That afternoon, Cedric asked to meet with me.At the cafe, he'd already taken off the aurora bracelet. All that remained on his wrist was a faint indentation."Camille asked me to give this back to you." He pushed the jewelry box across the table."It was meant for her." I didn't touch it. "It isn't mine."Cedric smiled. "You're really going through with the divorce?""What does it have to do with you?""Of course it does."He lifted his mug, his expression no longer carrying the innocent look he'd worn in front of Camille."I've known her for ten years, Tristan. We developed our first model together. We slept in the lab together. We even made a wish together—that once the company succeeded, we'd celebrate at an underwater hotel.""So, you're back to take away everything she has now?""I'm taking back what was mine to begin with."He

"You're divorcing me over one trip and an equity transfer agreement? Do you even hear yourself?"Camille chased after me out of the private dining room and caught me by the wrist in front of the elevator. Her grip was strong. I tried twice to pull free, but couldn't.Behind us, Naomi's furious voice rang out from the room. "Let him go! I want to see how well he does without you. Give it a few days, and he'll come crawling back, begging you to take him back!""And the hotel, the bracelet, and the fake photo," I reminded her."I already explained all of that.""Explaining something doesn't make the lie true."The elevator doors opened, and the people inside looked over.Camille released my wrist and lowered her voice. "Cedric just came back from abroad. The people at the investment fund only trust him. The transfer agreement is the condition for the investment. It doesn't mean I still have feelings for him.""Then, why did you lie to me?"She hesitated. "Because I knew you woul

Looking at his name, I suddenly found the whole thing pretty absurd.First the underwater suite. Then the $38,000 piece of jewelry. And now, this equity transfer agreement.Camille had ruined our third anniversary—partly to make up for the ten years they'd lost, and partly to secure his investment. And in the end, she wanted me to sign it myself."So, this family dinner was never about explaining the underwater suite. And it wasn't about explaining that fake photo, either."I lifted my head and looked around the table at the four people wearing four completely different expressions."It was about getting me to willingly hand over marital assets to your decade-old friend."Camille frowned. "Tristan, don't make it sound so awful! This is just part of the investment agreement. The investors behind Cedric need to see that the company is serious. The shares will only be held in his name temporarily. "Once the financing goes through, they'll be transferred back. You don't understand
