Chapter 3 Everyone Knew but Me

ผู้เขียน: Existence
When I got home, I went straight to the study.

In the bottom compartment of the cabinet, I dug out some materials Camille had kept from college.

On the yellowed project proposal, I found two names side by side—Camille Everhart, and Cedric Ashbourne.

Using Cedric's name, I searched Camille's old computer and found posts from the university forum dating back to those days.

Apparently, they had been a couple everyone on campus knew about. They even entered an entrepreneurship competition together.

The concept behind the core project at Camille's company now had actually come from that competition, but the project had failed.

She ended up with a mountain of debt, while he received an acceptance letter from a prestigious university overseas and flew across the ocean without a second thought.

I had been the one who stayed beside Camille through the hardest years of her life.

Now that she'd finally made it, the man who had been absent through all the struggle had returned to share the glory.

At eight that evening, I heard the lock turn. Camille pushed open the door, with Cedric right behind her.

It was the first time I'd ever met him. He was dressed impeccably in that custom-tailored suit, with a suitcase in hand.

"Tristan, Cedric doesn't have anywhere to store his luggage for now, so he's going to leave it here for a few days," Camille explained as she changed out of her shoes. "He's also here to pick up some investment documents he left behind."

Cedric stepped around Camille and came up to me with a faint smile.

"Sorry to impose, Tristan. Camille says you're incredibly understanding, so I'm sure you won't mind."

I frowned, but he acted as though he hadn't noticed. He walked right past me and settled into the living room.

Camille stayed with him the entire time, completely ignoring the look on my face.

Then, Cedric went into the study and casually pulled open the third drawer. "Camille, the college yearbook is still here!"

He even opened the refrigerator. Pointing to a bottle of liquor tucked in the back, he said, "You still have this? It was a graduation gift. I figured you'd have finished it years ago."

He kept calling me Tristan respectfully, but every little thing he did was a declaration that he knew Camille's past better than I did and that he was the real man of the house.

When he reached the dining table, Cedric spotted the Norhaven travel brochure I'd left there.

He turned to Camille with an overly apologetic look.

"Oh, were you two planning to go to Norhaven? If I'd known, I never would've been so selfish as to ask Camille to help me keep that promise we made back in college about going underwater together. Tristan, don't be mad at Camille."

Camille immediately frowned and cut him off. "We're just discussing work. Don't make it sound like something else."

Cedric quickly smiled and corrected himself. "Right, right. Just work."

He lifted a hand to smooth back his hair. His cuff slipped down, revealing the silver aurora bracelet around his wrist.

I stared at it, then walked over and held out my hand. "Give me the bracelet."

Cedric froze. Instinctively, he stepped back behind Camille.

Camille immediately moved in front of him, shielding him from me.

"Tristan, what are you doing? It's just a bracelet, and Cedric really likes it. If it bothers you that much, I'll buy you another one tomorrow. In fact, I'll get you something even more expensive."

"You can't buy another one." I looked straight into Camille's eyes and spoke slowly, each word deliberate. "I spent a month designing that bracelet. I was going to give it to you as our third-anniversary gift."

Camille went rigid, her expression instantly growing complicated.

Seeing this, Cedric immediately took off the bracelet and placed it on the table. His eyes turned red. "I'm sorry, Tristan. I really didn't know. I thought Camille had just bought it on a whim. Please don't fight because of me."

He acted as though he were the one who had been wronged.

The moment Camille saw his reddened eyes, her concern for him overwhelmed her guilt toward me.

She shot me a reproachful look, then took Cedric by the arm. "I'll walk you downstairs."

A little while later, Naomi called. "Tristan, did you embarrass Cedric today?"

Her voice was full of accusation.

"Cedric only came back to help Camille bring in several investments. I'll have you know, they almost got married back then. If he hadn't gone abroad, you wouldn't have stood a chance. Can't you at least show him some basic courtesy?"

I gripped my phone, suddenly overcome by how absurd it all was.

So, Naomi had known Cedric was back all along, too.

In this household, I was the only one kept in the dark, the only one made into a fool.

Camille sold the two properties and sports car in her name to cover the company's financial shortfall. She also transferred half of our assets into my account. She even sent Naomi back to the countryside, completely removing everyone and everything from her life that might make me unhappy. The day before our divorce was finalized, she stood outside my office building with a velvet box in her hands.Inside was a five-carat diamond ring, even bigger and more dazzling than the one she'd once promised me.She dropped to one knee in front of me, drawing a crowd of onlookers."Tristan, I've cleared away every obstacle. Cedric is in prison, and I've gotten the company back on track."She looked up at me, her eyes filled with fragile, pleading hope."Can you give me one more chance? Please. We can start over. This time, I'll do whatever you want. We'll go to Norhaven. We'll travel the world…"I looked down at the glittering diamond ring, realizing how absurd it all was."Camille, do

Three days later, Camille received my divorce papers at the office.Along with them came a court order freezing marital assets.I hadn't held back. I'd hired a lawyer to freeze the bank accounts in Camille's name that were considered marital property, along with part of her stake in the company. At two that afternoon, Camille stormed into my apartment. Her eyes were bloodshot, and she clutched the divorce papers so tightly they'd been crumpled. The immaculate business suit she usually wore was wrinkled and disheveled."Tristan, I can't believe you got a lawyer to go through my accounts! Have you really decided to throw away every last bit of consideration you had for me?"She slammed the papers onto the coffee table, her voice hoarse.I sat on the couch and took a sip of coffee."When you secretly booked an underwater suite for Cedric, did you think about how I'd feel?""I told you, I did it to secure the funding!"She ran a hand through her hair, her face twisted with anguis

It had been five days since I sent Camille the divorce agreement, and she still hadn't signed it.She had her assistant send me flowers, bring me food, and even bought two new tickets to Norhaven.I returned everything.…On Friday afternoon, I went back to our old home to retrieve the last of my documents. When I opened the door, Cedric was sitting in the living room. He was wearing my slippers, with my mug placed in front of him.Camille was on the balcony, making a phone call. The moment she saw me walk in, she hung up."Cedric's hotel had a guest information leak, so it's not safe for him to stay there right now. I asked him to stay in the guest room for a couple of days."She said it so naturally, as if we hadn't even discussed getting divorced.Cedric stood up. "Tristan, Camille said you haven't been coming home lately. I'm only staying for two nights.""This is our marital home." I looked at Camille. "Have him leave."She furrowed her brows. "Don't turn a work-related

I moved into a friend's vacant apartment for the time being. The next day, my lawyer sent Camille the divorce papers. She didn't respond.…That afternoon, Cedric asked to meet with me.At the cafe, he'd already taken off the aurora bracelet. All that remained on his wrist was a faint indentation."Camille asked me to give this back to you." He pushed the jewelry box across the table."It was meant for her." I didn't touch it. "It isn't mine."Cedric smiled. "You're really going through with the divorce?""What does it have to do with you?""Of course it does."He lifted his mug, his expression no longer carrying the innocent look he'd worn in front of Camille."I've known her for ten years, Tristan. We developed our first model together. We slept in the lab together. We even made a wish together—that once the company succeeded, we'd celebrate at an underwater hotel.""So, you're back to take away everything she has now?""I'm taking back what was mine to begin with."He

"You're divorcing me over one trip and an equity transfer agreement? Do you even hear yourself?"Camille chased after me out of the private dining room and caught me by the wrist in front of the elevator. Her grip was strong. I tried twice to pull free, but couldn't.Behind us, Naomi's furious voice rang out from the room. "Let him go! I want to see how well he does without you. Give it a few days, and he'll come crawling back, begging you to take him back!""And the hotel, the bracelet, and the fake photo," I reminded her."I already explained all of that.""Explaining something doesn't make the lie true."The elevator doors opened, and the people inside looked over.Camille released my wrist and lowered her voice. "Cedric just came back from abroad. The people at the investment fund only trust him. The transfer agreement is the condition for the investment. It doesn't mean I still have feelings for him.""Then, why did you lie to me?"She hesitated. "Because I knew you woul

  • I'll See the Lights Without Her   Chapter 5 The Agreement

Looking at his name, I suddenly found the whole thing pretty absurd.First the underwater suite. Then the $38,000 piece of jewelry. And now, this equity transfer agreement.Camille had ruined our third anniversary—partly to make up for the ten years they'd lost, and partly to secure his investment. And in the end, she wanted me to sign it myself."So, this family dinner was never about explaining the underwater suite. And it wasn't about explaining that fake photo, either."I lifted my head and looked around the table at the four people wearing four completely different expressions."It was about getting me to willingly hand over marital assets to your decade-old friend."Camille frowned. "Tristan, don't make it sound so awful! This is just part of the investment agreement. The investors behind Cedric need to see that the company is serious. The shares will only be held in his name temporarily. "Once the financing goes through, they'll be transferred back. You don't understand
