David and Pearl were sitting by a river.

Pearl told David about what she had been through for over twenty years.

David listened quietly and did not speak.

"Mr. Lidell, aren't I stupid? I give them whatever they want! If I don't have the money, I'll just loan it from someone else and save up to pay back the loan," Pearl asked when she had finished.

"Miss Pearl, you're not stupid. You're just too sentimental! The more you give, the more they take it for granted," David said after pondering it.
