Chapter 3

Author: Bathed In Gold
I moved into the company dorms for the time being.

Life became incredibly peaceful for a few days.

A week later, Ms. Palmer asked me to pick up some brand samples from the mall.

It was the weekend and the mall was packed.

As I walked past the jewelry section, two familiar figures caught my eye.

Daniel and Gina were leaning over a display counter, their heads close together.

I paused, planning to walk around them. But Gina looked up and spotted me.

She ran over immediately.

"Grace!"

She grabbed my arm, pulling me along.

"You're back from your trip? Why didn't you tell us?

"Come look. I’ve been picking out jewelry for you."

A row of gold pieces lay on the counter.

Gina grabbed a chunky gold bangle and tried to force it onto my wrist.

"Isn't this beautiful? Daniel said we're buying traditional gold jewelry. I spent hours picking this."

The cold metal bit into my skin.

I yanked my hand back.

"No, thank you."

Gina froze for a second.

Then she smiled and pushed the bangle toward me again.

"Just try it on. Just a quick try."

Losing my patience, I pushed her hand away forcefully.

Gina tripped over a nearby chair during the scuffle.

She stumbled backward, her hip slamming hard against the edge of the glass counter.

She gasped in pain.

The gold bangle clattered loudly onto the glass surface.

Daniel’s face dropped instantly.

He rushed over to support Gina.

Then he turned to me, his voice freezing cold.

"Are you crazy, Grace? Why did you push her?"

I stood frozen, my hand still hanging in mid-air.

Gina bent over, winced and tugged at Daniel’s sleeve.

"It’s fine, really. I just lost my balance."

Daniel ignored her, keeping his eyes locked on me.

"You owe her an apology, Grace. She has been running herself ragged helping with your wedding.

“Does she owe you something? Why the attitude?"

I looked at him and spoke softly, "Did I ask for her help? This is my wedding…"

Gina’s eyes welled with tears. Her lips trembled.

"Grace..."

Daniel looked at her, then cut me off with an irritated sigh.

"Enough, Grace. Look, you made Gina cry.

"You don't know the first thing about planning a wedding. Without her, this whole thing would be an absolute disaster.

"Are you throwing this tantrum to tell me you don't want to get married anymore?"

He stared at me with pure confidence.

In his mind, I would always be the quiet girl who bowed her head and apologized.

I looked at the two of them.

At eighteen, we had joined hands and promised to stay together forever.

Now, at twenty-eight, I stared at my fiancé and my best friend, my eyes burning as tears finally spilled over.

Seeing my tears, Daniel softened.

He let go of Gina and took two steps toward me. He reached out to wipe my face.

"Hey, I was just trying to scare you. Of course we're getting married. I…"

I took a sharp step back.

"Daniel, I'm not marrying you."

Daniel’s hand froze. His face went completely dark.

"Are you a child, Grace? Do you even think before you speak?"

A condescending smirk played on his lips.

He shook his head.

"There's a limit to your tantrums. Not marrying me? You don't even know how to cook.

“You get lost taking the subway. Who else besides Gina and me would ever put up with you?"

I stared at him, then let out a self-deprecating laugh.

Of course. It was always like this.

My thoughts and my emotions were just a childish game to them.

I was never respected.

“Never mind.”

I turned and walked away.

Behind me, Gina’s voice sounded frantic.

"Daniel, go after her! What are you doing?"

Then came Daniel’s voice, slow and deeply annoyed.

"Let her go. She'll come crawling back once she realizes she can't survive on her own. She needs to learn a lesson."

He was right. I really needed to learn my lesson.

I bought Daniel a cup of coffee. He sat across from me, looking visibly touched. He eagerly pushed the sugar packets toward my hand.I smiled faintly. "I drink it black."His hand froze in mid-air, caught awkwardly."But you used to..." He started to speak, then trailed off uncomfortably.I picked up my cup and took a sip. Black coffee was bitter, but it was clean and straightforward. There was no sticky, lingering aftertaste of milk and sugar.Back then, whenever Daniel bought coffee for Gina and me, he always bought lattes. The first time Gina tried an iced Americano, she winced and gagged from the bitterness.I had mentioned that I actually liked it.Daniel had just laughed. He told me that if Gina couldn't handle it, I shouldn't pretend. But I genuinely liked it. Over the years, whenever I expressed what I liked, nobody cared.I set my cup down and decided to lay everything out on the table."Daniel, I don't forgive you."I felt so incredibly sidelined all t

Daniel was determined to wear me down. For days, he staked out my apartment building. Every single morning, a massive bouquet of red roses would appear at my doorstep. On the evening of the sixth day, there was a knock at my door.Assuming it was Daniel, I opened it with an irritated expression. But it was Gina standing in the hallway. She had lost even more weight than Daniel. Her hair, which she usually kept meticulously styled, was messily tied back. When she saw me, her lips twitched as if she wanted to smile, but she couldn't manage it.She didn't ask to come in and I didn't invite her. We stood at the threshold, enveloped in an awkward silence. After a long pause, she handed me a paper bag. "Your mom asked me to drop this off."I took it. "Thanks."Her eyes began to well with tears. "I'm so sorry, Grace," she whispered."We promised to always have each other's backs when we became friends. “In the end, I was the one who hurt you." Her voice shook violently

Grace’s POVMy arrival abroad coincided perfectly with the corporate summer recess. Ms. Palmer generously granted me a two-week adjustment period, so I decided to enroll in a local language class near my apartment. One afternoon after class, I was wandering the streets and stumbled into a bakery. I stood at the counter for a long time, my eyes drifting from croissants to brioche and finally to cinnamon rolls.Back home, Daniel and Gina never asked for my order. They would always just request two identical items from the cashier, glance back at me and chin-flick."Ordered for you too. No need to thank us."I had never stood in front of a counter making my own choice; even my taste buds had been managed by others. I sighed and shook my head to clear the thought.A soft chuckle came from behind me. "Do you have decision fatigue?"I turned around. It was my substitute language teacher, Larry Clarke. Larry shrugged, flashing a bright, gap-toothed smile. "You’ve been s

Gina tugged at the hem of Daniel’s jacket."What do you mean she's gone? Where did she go?"Daniel gripped his phone tightly. He turned around, his eyes bloodshot as he glared at her."She left me. She was serious the whole time. “When she said she wasn't marrying me, she meant it."His voice cracked. In a moment of total breakdown, he pointed an accusing finger at Gina."This is your fault! If you hadn't constantly pushed your way into everything, she would never have been this ruthless. “You know how soft-hearted she is!"Gina’s face went completely pale. Her voice began to crack with tears. "Daniel, what is that supposed to mean? You’re blaming me?"Daniel’s voice raised."Shouldn't I blame you? It was supposed to be my wedding with Grace! “But you picked the interior design, you chose the venue styling and you even picked out the jewelry..."His voice grew quieter but his eyes grew redder. He couldn't go on.He suddenly remembered that Grace had mentioned th

Third-person POVOn the other side of town, Daniel yawned as he drove. Most of the wedding arrangements had to be scrapped and restarted. He had spent the previous night fixing them until the early hours of the morning. He smirked, turning to look at Gina, who was staring blankly out the passenger window."What do you want to eat later? Once we pick up Grace, let's grab lunch first."Gina unconsciously twisted her seatbelt around her fingers, her voice barely a whisper. "Ask Grace when she gets in. She feels... different this time."Daniel chuckled."How different can she really be? She’s been a pushover her whole life. “Once she blows off some steam, she’ll be fine."He turned the car into the office park where Grace worked and pulled out his phone to text her.[I'm downstairs. When are you coming down?]No response. He sent a few more texts. Still nothing.Frowning, he dialed her number. It went straight to voicemail. He stared at his phone for a moment. The casu

It was the day before my flight out of the country. My boss had given me the day off to say goodbye to my family. But before I even opened the front door, bursts of laughter echoed from inside the apartment. My mother’s laugh was the loudest."Oh, Gina, if you were my daughter, I would wake up smiling every single day."My hand froze on the doorknob. When I finally pushed the door open, a room full of happy faces turned to look at me. I immediately felt like an outsider.Daniel was sitting right in the middle of the couch, legs crossed. The moment he saw me, his smile vanished, replaced by an irritated grunt. My mother glared at me, clearly ready for a confrontation. "Grace, what is wrong with you? Daniel says you've been throwing tantrums lately."I didn’t answer. I just took off my coat and poured myself a glass of water. My mother rolled up her sleeves, about to stand up and lecture me.Gina glanced at me and tried to play peacemaker. "It's nothing.
