Chapter 2

Author: Bathed In Gold

The moment I got home that night, I started packing.

I had just zipped my suitcase shut when the front door burst open.

Daniel and Gina stumbled in, laughing and shoving each other.

Gina was practically draped over Daniel’s shoulder, doubling over with laughter.

"Stop pushing me! You know I'm right!"

Daniel tried to shake her off, grinning.

"You're delusional. Absolutely."

They kept fooling around until they finally noticed me standing nearby.

Daniel nudged Gina aside and pulled a few brochures from his bag like he was presenting a prize.

"Here, corporate girl. I had a friend track down some wedding planning catalogs.

“Take a look when you have a second."

He handed them to me.

I stared at the glossy photos of wedding dresses on the cover, hesitating for just a second.

But Gina had already lunged forward and snatched one open.

"Wow, look at this venue! Daniel, look!"

Daniel leaned in.

Their heads came together as they flipped through the pages, their fingers pointing back and forth.

"Ooh, this one is perfect. I love it!"

"The ballroom looks a bit small, don't you think?"

"Why are you so picky? We're going with this one!"

They started bickering playfully again.

Gina swatted Daniel’s arm, and he caught her by the wrist, the pages rustling loudly between them.

Holding her wrists tight, Daniel laughed.

"Keep teasing me and I won't book it."

Gina ducked her head, giggling. "Okay, okay, I give up. Let go..."

He finally released her, casually messing up her hair.

Standing on the sidelines, I felt like the ultimate third wheel.

It was glaringly obvious.

Compared to me, Gina looked much more like Daniel’s bride.

The house was being renovated to Gina's taste.

The wedding was being styled to Gina's aesthetic.

Flipping to a certain page, Gina suddenly said, "I want these flowers at the venue. Massive bunches of them. I’ve envisioned it for years."

Daniel nodded. "Done. That is it."

I stared at Daniel, who was so busy validating Gina's opinions.

Suddenly, I spoke up. "I like red roses."

Daniel looked up, startled.

Gina stared at me too, blinking in surprise before bursting into a laugh.

"Are you serious, Grace? Who uses red roses for weddings anymore? That's so tacky."

Daniel chuckled along, reaching over to pat my head.

"Gina's right. These flowers look so classy. Red roses are what we liked when we were kids.

“Come on, you need to let Gina help upgrade your taste."

His hand rested on my hair.

It was a familiar, warm touch, but it suddenly made me feel sick to my stomach.

My eyes stung.

I crouched down quickly, pretending to adjust my already-packed suitcase.

The cold metal zipper bit into my fingertips. I didn't dare look up, terrified my tears would spill over.

But the truth was, I had spoken up before.

Many times.

Last winter, when we were picking out curtains, Gina chose a dark grey pattern.

Standing beside them, I murmured softly, "Wouldn't the cream color feel a bit warmer?"

Gina hadn't even looked up. "Grey hides stains better."

Daniel, scrolling through his phone, had mumbled, "Let's go with Gina's pick. She has an eye for this."

The row of cream curtains had hung right in front of me, swaying slightly, but neither of them looked at them again.

The summer before last, the three of us went on a trip.

Gina wanted to see the desert out west. I said I wanted to go to the beach.

Daniel, who was booking the tickets, replied without lifting his head, "The desert is so much cooler. Plus, Gina spent two weeks making the itinerary."

That day, I sat on the couch, silently watching them chatter away about the trip.

I was unable to wedge a single word into the conversation.

Once or twice, I thought it was just a coincidence.

Five or six times, I thought I just wasn't being assertive enough.

By the tenth or twentieth time, I started to doubt myself.

I wondered if the things I liked were genuinely inferior.

Was I really tacky for liking red roses?

Was cream really that impractical?

Was the ocean really not worth seeing?

So, I tried to change.

But no matter how much I adapted, they still never asked for my opinion.

I was like a guest who always arrived after the feast was over.

And by the time I would open my mouth, they would have already eaten my share.

My tears were wetting the zipper handle.

Daniel’s voice drifted down from above. "Grace, why are you packing a suitcase? Business trip?"

Gina chimed in, "Yeah, where are you going?"

I took a deep breath, looking up, intending to tell them I was leaving for good.

But as soon as I raised my eyes, I saw they had already looked back down, absorbed in the brochures again.

My mouth opened, then closed.

Never mind.

If someone didn't listen to you the first hundred times, the hundred and first time wouldn't make a difference.

I bent over, grabbed the handle of my suitcase, and said softly, "I'm leaving."

Daniel didn't even look up.

"Hurry back. We're supposed to go ring shopping in a few days."

Gina waved at me without looking.

"Safe travels, Grace! Oh, and lock the door on your way out!”

I bought Daniel a cup of coffee. He sat across from me, looking visibly touched. He eagerly pushed the sugar packets toward my hand.I smiled faintly. "I drink it black."His hand froze in mid-air, caught awkwardly."But you used to..." He started to speak, then trailed off uncomfortably.I picked up my cup and took a sip. Black coffee was bitter, but it was clean and straightforward. There was no sticky, lingering aftertaste of milk and sugar.Back then, whenever Daniel bought coffee for Gina and me, he always bought lattes. The first time Gina tried an iced Americano, she winced and gagged from the bitterness.I had mentioned that I actually liked it.Daniel had just laughed. He told me that if Gina couldn't handle it, I shouldn't pretend. But I genuinely liked it. Over the years, whenever I expressed what I liked, nobody cared.I set my cup down and decided to lay everything out on the table."Daniel, I don't forgive you."I felt so incredibly sidelined all t

Daniel was determined to wear me down. For days, he staked out my apartment building. Every single morning, a massive bouquet of red roses would appear at my doorstep. On the evening of the sixth day, there was a knock at my door.Assuming it was Daniel, I opened it with an irritated expression. But it was Gina standing in the hallway. She had lost even more weight than Daniel. Her hair, which she usually kept meticulously styled, was messily tied back. When she saw me, her lips twitched as if she wanted to smile, but she couldn't manage it.She didn't ask to come in and I didn't invite her. We stood at the threshold, enveloped in an awkward silence. After a long pause, she handed me a paper bag. "Your mom asked me to drop this off."I took it. "Thanks."Her eyes began to well with tears. "I'm so sorry, Grace," she whispered."We promised to always have each other's backs when we became friends. “In the end, I was the one who hurt you." Her voice shook violently

Grace’s POVMy arrival abroad coincided perfectly with the corporate summer recess. Ms. Palmer generously granted me a two-week adjustment period, so I decided to enroll in a local language class near my apartment. One afternoon after class, I was wandering the streets and stumbled into a bakery. I stood at the counter for a long time, my eyes drifting from croissants to brioche and finally to cinnamon rolls.Back home, Daniel and Gina never asked for my order. They would always just request two identical items from the cashier, glance back at me and chin-flick."Ordered for you too. No need to thank us."I had never stood in front of a counter making my own choice; even my taste buds had been managed by others. I sighed and shook my head to clear the thought.A soft chuckle came from behind me. "Do you have decision fatigue?"I turned around. It was my substitute language teacher, Larry Clarke. Larry shrugged, flashing a bright, gap-toothed smile. "You’ve been s

Gina tugged at the hem of Daniel’s jacket."What do you mean she's gone? Where did she go?"Daniel gripped his phone tightly. He turned around, his eyes bloodshot as he glared at her."She left me. She was serious the whole time. “When she said she wasn't marrying me, she meant it."His voice cracked. In a moment of total breakdown, he pointed an accusing finger at Gina."This is your fault! If you hadn't constantly pushed your way into everything, she would never have been this ruthless. “You know how soft-hearted she is!"Gina’s face went completely pale. Her voice began to crack with tears. "Daniel, what is that supposed to mean? You’re blaming me?"Daniel’s voice raised."Shouldn't I blame you? It was supposed to be my wedding with Grace! “But you picked the interior design, you chose the venue styling and you even picked out the jewelry..."His voice grew quieter but his eyes grew redder. He couldn't go on.He suddenly remembered that Grace had mentioned th

Third-person POVOn the other side of town, Daniel yawned as he drove. Most of the wedding arrangements had to be scrapped and restarted. He had spent the previous night fixing them until the early hours of the morning. He smirked, turning to look at Gina, who was staring blankly out the passenger window."What do you want to eat later? Once we pick up Grace, let's grab lunch first."Gina unconsciously twisted her seatbelt around her fingers, her voice barely a whisper. "Ask Grace when she gets in. She feels... different this time."Daniel chuckled."How different can she really be? She’s been a pushover her whole life. “Once she blows off some steam, she’ll be fine."He turned the car into the office park where Grace worked and pulled out his phone to text her.[I'm downstairs. When are you coming down?]No response. He sent a few more texts. Still nothing.Frowning, he dialed her number. It went straight to voicemail. He stared at his phone for a moment. The casu

It was the day before my flight out of the country. My boss had given me the day off to say goodbye to my family. But before I even opened the front door, bursts of laughter echoed from inside the apartment. My mother’s laugh was the loudest."Oh, Gina, if you were my daughter, I would wake up smiling every single day."My hand froze on the doorknob. When I finally pushed the door open, a room full of happy faces turned to look at me. I immediately felt like an outsider.Daniel was sitting right in the middle of the couch, legs crossed. The moment he saw me, his smile vanished, replaced by an irritated grunt. My mother glared at me, clearly ready for a confrontation. "Grace, what is wrong with you? Daniel says you've been throwing tantrums lately."I didn’t answer. I just took off my coat and poured myself a glass of water. My mother rolled up her sleeves, about to stand up and lecture me.Gina glanced at me and tried to play peacemaker. "It's nothing.
