Chapter 2

Penulis: Sunflower
Half-groggy, I was jolted awake by a loud bang on the door.

Outside, it was already dark.

Snow was standing in the doorway and glaring at me. When she saw I was awake, she strode over to the couch.

“Jared, do you have any idea how many times I called you? Why didn’t you answer?”

I rubbed my forehead and instinctively reached for my phone. That was when I realized it had died. I did not even notice that the battery had run out.

I held the phone out to her. She stared at the black screen for a moment, slightly stunned. She smelled faintly of a mix of alcohol and laundry detergent as she stood there.

My mind slowly cleared. Everything that had happened during the day suddenly came rushing back.

I finally understood why she, who normally never reached out to me, suddenly got angry when she could not reach me.

Was it because I had disrespected her father, or because of that comment I left?

Snow furrowed her brows. She said in a cold voice, “Then, you shouldn’t have made it impossible for me to find you.”

I asked, “When did you call me?”

“When?! I spent the entire day trying to reach you! I’ve been calling since 10 a.m.!”

‘10 a.m.…’ I remembered clearly.

That was shortly after I had posted that comment.

So, Snow had not been too busy to check her phone. It was not that she did not know how desperately I needed her at that moment. She simply did not care.

It was because I openly challenged Yulan that she could no longer stay calm.

I let out a bitter laugh and asked, “Snow, my life is just school and home every day. If you really had something important, you could have come to me yourself. Is there some reason you couldn’t?”

Snow furrowed her brows. She opened her mouth to speak but could not say a word.

“I would never do something as childish as deliberately ignoring your calls. I’ve been busy with a lot of things at school lately. Since you’re fine, there’s no need to force a conversation.”

I was completely drained and had no energy to argue with her. After that, I went back to my room.

Not long after, Snow came in.

She sat down beside me and, unusually patient, began explaining herself.

“Jared, my dad told me everything that happened today. I know you aren’t at fault, but he’s older. You need to show him some respect.”

‘Ha! Respect!’ I thought.

I had tiptoed around Richard for the past five years, but all I ever received was an accusation that I was the disrespectful one.

Besides, what had her family ever done over the years to show me an ounce of respect?

Thinking about it was pointless.

Snow thought I was still sulking, but the truth was, I had already started wondering if it was time to let her go.

After finalizing the divorce, we went straight to the bank to withdraw the money. When I handed it to Snow, I gave her a friendly reminder to think carefully before doing anything.Snow took the money and said seriously, “Jared, trust me! You won’t have to wait long. I’ll win you back. We’ll never be apart after that.”I did not bother arguing with her. I just smiled faintly. “Good luck.”With things at home mostly settled, I focused entirely on preparing for my overseas studies. The next time I saw Snow was the day before I was set to leave. She stood at my door and looked worn out. Nothing could hide the dark circles under her eyes.I had heard bits and pieces about what had happened to her. Yulan had scammed her. The project she invested in was tied to an international scam network. All the money she had invested was lost. The chance of getting any of it back was very slim.Snow looked at me and said in a hoarse voice, “Jared, I heard you’re leaving the country. Why didn’t y

From that day on, Snow waited for me outside the apartment every day. Every single time, our interaction ended badly. Then, for a while, she stopped visiting. Just as I thought she had finally decided to give up on our marriage, she showed up again. But this time, it was for a different reason.“Jared, do you remember the money I left with you? I’ve an urgent matter and need to withdraw it,” Snow said. It did sound urgent. She had left that money with me after her career had stabilized. She once told me that under no circumstances could she withdraw it lightly. It was all of her capital, and she couldn't treat it without thought.I did not know what the “urgent matter” was. I frowned and asked, “Are you sure? You should think carefully about how you use this money.”At that moment, Richard suddenly appeared. He shouted at me, “Jared, what do you mean by this?! You refuse to return the money? Do you know you’re seizing someone else’s property? If you know what’s good for you, giv

I could not believe that Snow had jumped to such a conclusion from just one look. Before I could say anything, Yvonne stepped in front of me.“Ms. Judson, if you spread lies like that, I could sue you for defamation.”Snow snorted in disdain. “Sue me for defamation? Do you even know that Jared and I are still married? This is an illicit affair! You’re the ‘other’ woman!”“Snow, shut up!” I said sharply.Yvonne blocked my way and said calmly, “Jared hurt his hand while helping me fix something. I’m responsible for that. He only came into my apartment because I invited him to dinner. Nothing inappropriate happened. I have nothing to hide. But you, the video of you doing laundry at another man’s house, is still online. The captions were suggestive. If you want to talk about having affairs, maybe you should reflect on yourself first.”“You… How do you know that?!” Snow looked stunned. Her face turned pale.“Don’t be so surprised. That video has been online for a long time. I saw it.

Yvonne looked surprised, then quickly started looking for ways to comfort me.“I didn’t expect you to be so good at comforting people.”Yvonne cleared her throat. “Are you saying I usually seem cold and unapproachable, and now, you’re surprised I actually care?”I waved my hand quickly. “No, not at all! I never thought you were cold. Back then, you were frustrated with me for not making progress. That’s why you seemed distant.”Yvonne looked at my hand, which was now completely wrapped, and was waving in the air. She could not help but laugh.“Okay, fine. But seriously, how are you supposed to live alone with your hand like this? Come over to my place for meals for a while.”“That sounds like too much trouble. The cut isn’t really that bad.”Yvonne put on a serious face. “Are you scared because my cooking might be bad? I’m not that bad in the kitchen. You got hurt while helping me, so it’s only natural for me to take responsibility for it. If you keep refusing, I’ll never be abl

In the past, I would never have believed that there would come a day when Snow would actually try to stop me. She even sounded a little panicked. In this relationship, Snow and Richard were always the ones in control. The moment I showed the slightest dissatisfaction, I became the “ungrateful husband” who could not understand her. No matter how much love I had for her, it was worn down day after day.Yet, when I poured all my love on Snow, she was busy giving her attention to another man.“Snow, are you really this naive? Yulan isn’t your ‘brother.’ He’s an adult man who’s interested in you. You really can’t tell?“Tell me, in the eight years that we’ve been together, have you ever done something as simple as washing my clothes? What you call a small favor looks very different from my perspective. My wife, in another man’s home, wearing only a camisole, does something so intimate for him that she’s never done for me. How’s that not crossing a line?”Snow bit her lip and whispere

I recognized the look on Yulan’s face. It was the same contempt I had seen on Richard so many times. They both thought I was just living off Snow as a freeloader with no right to push back. But I had never spent a single penny of Snow’s money. This house was the last thing my parents had left me. Before they passed, Snow had held my hand and promised them she would take care of me.Five years later, everything had changed.I wanted to know what Snow was thinking. I lifted my head and said to Yulan, “If you think I have no right to kick you out, then you can ask Snow to kick me out instead.”“Enough!” Snow stepped between us and scowled. She said softly to Yulan, “Go home for now. I’ll come see you later.”Yulan’s eyes welled up immediately. He glared at me in frustration, grabbed his things, and left in a hurry.Snow watched his lonely figure for a moment. She hesitated and then went after him. She returned after a few minutes.“Jared, I didn’t expect Yulan to say those thing
