Chapter 3

Author: Lucky Lucky
By the time I returned to the bedroom, night had fallen. As expected, Damian still had not come back.

A maid brought me dinner and explained that Damian had instructed the kitchen to prepare my favorite cream of mushroom soup. He had even gone out of his way to summon our family doctor to check on me.

When tears dripped down my cheeks and fell into my food, all I could feel was the bitter irony of it all.

The doctor confirmed that the baby was fine. Only after seeing him out did I finally let out a sigh of relief.

Right then, my phone rang. It was my father.

“Elena, they’ll be there tomorrow night to bring you home. Are you absolutely sure about this?”

I gazed out the window at the rose garden.

Five years ago, my father asked me, “Can you promise me that man will never hurt you?”

I nodded without the slightest hesitation. Looking back, I could almost laugh at my own naivety.

“I’m sure, Dad. I’m coming home with my baby.”

After hanging up, I walked toward the baby’s room at the end of the hallway.

Three months ago, Damian had personally chosen the room for our child. It was filled with everything we had prepared for the baby’s arrival.

However, when I wheeled my suitcase inside and pushed open the door, I froze for a moment.

The once pale blue walls had been repainted. The crib Damian had personally picked out was gone, replaced by a double bed in complete disarray.

The closet was filled with women's dresses.

Vivian stood by the window, instructing the servants as they arranged fresh flowers.

When she saw me, surprise flashed across her face. “Donna? What brings you here?”

I stared at the empty corner of the room and asked, “Where are my baby’s things?”

“Don Luccese had them moved.”

A subtle, knowing smile tugged at her lips as she continued,

“I’ve been busy organizing the allies’ banquet lately, and I often have to work late into the night. Don Luccese was worried it wouldn’t be safe for me to travel back and forth alone, so he asked me to stay at the estate for a while. I only wanted to use a guest room at first, but he said this room had the best natural light and would be perfect for me.”

I gripped the doorframe, my nails digging so hard into the wood that they nearly left marks. “So you turned my baby’s room into your bedroom?”

The smile faded slightly from Vivian’s face. “Donna, the baby hasn’t even been born yet. Of course, I’ll move out once the baby arrives.”

She said it so casually as though there was nothing wrong with what she had done.

I took a deep breath, turned around, and went to find the butler. Then I followed his directions, and I made my way to the basement storage room.

The air was damp and musty. The crib had been carelessly propped against a corner, while the tiny clothes I had bought for our baby sat in cardboard boxes, gathering dust.

Slowly, I crouched down and picked up one of the little outfits.

Suddenly, I remembered how Damian had knelt beside the crib just three months ago, awkwardly trying to figure out how to install the safety rails.

He laughed and said, “Elena, our baby is going to be the happiest child in the world.”

Before our baby had even been born, their belongings had already been banished to a storage room.

Clutching the tiny outfit to my chest, I could barely hold back my sobs.

So this was what happened when someone fell out of love. Even the child they had once looked forward to welcoming into the world could end up suffering for it.

Footsteps suddenly sounded behind me.

“Elena?” Damian had returned at some point without my noticing.

The moment he saw me kneeling on the floor, he hurried over, reaching down to lift me into his arms.

“Honey, what are you doing down here? The floor is cold. Come on, get up.”

I shook my head and stayed where I was. “Who ordered the crib to be moved?”

Damian paused for a moment. “What’s the matter? Vivian has been handling a lot of family business lately. Some people aren’t happy with her, and I don’t feel comfortable letting her stay somewhere alone. There are guards here. She’ll be much safer staying with us.”

I lifted my head and looked at him. “So you gave her our baby’s room?”

His brows drew together slightly.

“Elena, the baby won’t be born for another five months. This room is closest to ours, which makes it convenient for me to call on her when I need something. Besides, she’s only staying temporarily. Once things settle down, I’ll have the room put back the way it was.”

He took the tiny outfit from my hands and gently brushed the dust from its fabric. Then he bent down and kissed my forehead. “Don’t be sad, darling. Once the banquet is over, I’ll personally help you set up the baby room again, all right?”

I did not answer. I no longer wanted that room, just as I no longer wanted the man standing before me.

My phone suddenly vibrated with a new message from my father: [Tomorrow night, nine o’clock. West gate.]

I tightened my grip on the phone.

In just one more day, I would be able to leave this place with my baby. There was just one problem left—the divorce papers.

After a moment’s thought, I sent a message to the number I had saved.

A month later, news arrived from New Borough.Damian’s uncle had been stripped of all his power for betraying the family.Vivian was also turned over to the authorities for investigation on charges of intentional assault and involvement in the illegal transfer of funds. Before she was taken away, she tried to contact me. I did not answer. Later, Marco told me that she had confessed to everything during the investigation. At first, all she had wanted was to become the Luccese family’s true Donna. She thought that if she kept driving wedges between Damian and me, he would eventually grow tired of me.Eventually, she realized that even though Damian indulged her, he had never intended to divorce me.Therefore, she began following Damian’s uncle’s orders, using her position as an Consigliere to gain access to the family’s secrets. After hearing all this, I simply gave a quiet, indifferent reply, “I see.”After I hung up, my father knocked on the study door. “Elena, are you ready?”

Damian never left Socotra. He checked into a hotel in town. Every day, he had flowers, maternity supplies, and handwritten letters delivered to me.I refused to accept any of them. Eventually, he stopped sending gifts and simply had Marco check in with my lawyer periodically to ask about the baby. Then, half a month later, a Moretti family cargo ship was attacked. The news broke while I was attending a family council meeting. My father’s face darkened. “It was the Luccese family.”The room fell silent. Every eye turned toward me.Someone murmured under their breath, “Looks like Damian still hasn’t accepted it.”“Ms. Moretti only just asked for a divorce, and now the Luccese family is retaliating.”I said nothing. It was not until Marco’s call came through. “Donna, something’s happened to Don Luccese.”My heart tightened. “What happened?”“He discovered that his uncle had been secretly working with a rival family, planning to use the attack on the Moretti cargo ship to provoke

Elena's POV:Three days later, I was reviewing the family’s accounts in my study when my father suddenly handed me an invitation. “The Don of the Luccese family has requested permission to attend next week’s Socotran Mafia Summit.”My hand paused slightly as I turned a page. “What does he want?”“He says he has something important to discuss with you in person.”My father snorted, “If you don’t want to see him, I’ll have them turn him away right now.”I pondered for a moment. “Let him come.”My father looked a little surprised as I closed the file in front of me.“Dad, I’m no longer the woman who hides away in the estate, waiting for her husband to come home. If he has business to discuss, then we’ll handle it according to family protocol.”…On the day of the summit, Damian arrived right on time. He had lost a considerable amount of weight in just a few days. His usually well-kept hair fell out of place, while the shadows beneath his eyes made him look utterly worn down.

Five years ago, when Damian had first taken over as the Don, the Luccese family had been beset by enemies both within and without. It was Elena who had persuaded her father to let Damian use the Moretti family’s shipping routes. That support had been instrumental in helping him secure his position as don of the Luccese family in New Borough.Over the years, he had grown so accustomed to the convenience those routes provided that he had forgotten one crucial fact—They had never belonged to the Luccese family in the first place.“She’s willing to put the interests of an entire family at stake just to spite me?”The moment the words left his mouth, Marco lowered his head. “Don Luccese, the Moretti family’s announcement stated that the partnership was ending because the marriage alliance between our families had been dissolved. And…”“And what?”“For the past five years, the Donna personally maintained every business relationship we had with partners in Socrota. The families we wo

Elena's POV:Meanwhile, dawn was just breaking as the plane touched down in Socrota. My father was waiting for me on the tarmac himself. The moment he saw me, he hurried over.“Elena.” That one word was all it took for my tears to spill over.My father pulled me into his arms. “You’re home now. That’s all that matters.”He lowered his gaze to my stomach, his eyes reddening slightly. “How’s the baby?”“The doctor says the baby is stable for now.” I forced a faint smile. “Dad, you’re going to be a grandfather.”My father remained silent for a long time, then he gently patted my back. “From this day forward, no one will ever make you or your baby suffer again.”By the time we arrived at the Moretti residence, the family doctor was already waiting. He said the baby was stable, but I had shown signs of a threatened miscarriage. For the time being, I needed to avoid strenuous activity and emotional distress. My father’s expression darkened terribly as he listened. “Does Damian know

Damian did not sleep a wink that night. He remained seated in his study until dawn, with his wife’s travel records from the past five years spread out before him.Since the day they married, Elena had barely ever left New Borough. The only time she had returned to Socrota was three years ago, when her father had fallen seriously ill. She had stayed for just two days before rushing back.It was all because his enemies had ambushed him, leaving her so worried that she could barely eat or sleep. Now…A soft knock came at the study door. “Don Luccese.”Lorenzo Rossi entered, carrying a kraft paper document envelope. “The Donna left this last night. She instructed me to give it to you this morning.”Damian immediately reached for it. He expected a letter, perhaps containing Elena’s final words to him. However, when he opened the envelope, what he found was a divorce agreement. His signature was clearly visible at the bottom.Damian’s pupils contracted sharply. He shot to his feet. “
