Chapter 4

作者: Amber Fleck
I stood there frozen, like a robot that had malfunctioned.

When I didn't say anything, Zachary began to panic. "What's wrong? Do you not like them?"

He looked at me, then quietly stole a glance in the direction of Aunt Bella, saying, "If you don't like them, we can go swap them for styles you do like once the party wraps up."

I sniffed, smiled, and shook my head at him. "No, I really like them. Thank you."

When Zachary noticed the redness around the corners of my eyes, he let out a sigh.

"JJ, I heard about your situation from my mom."

He patted my shoulder. "Aunt Christine's mental state isn't stable. You've had to put up with a lot just to accommodate her.

"Once you start college, focus on getting good grades. You can consider applying for graduate school in your third year. You still have your whole life ahead of you. I believe your future will be a good one."

Hearing Zachary's words, I could barely keep the smile on my face.

Could I really still have a future? Could I really leave "Jenna" behind and live on simply as "Jennifer"?

That evening, I got my answer.

As soon as we got home, Mom took the art supplies Zachary had given me and threw them straight out the window.

The paints splattered all over the ground, resembling the brilliant bloodstains of a person who had fallen to their death.

I rushed to the window, but before I could even process things, Mom pulled the clothes out of the gift bag.

The lighter's flame flickered to life, illuminating Mom's twisted expression.

"Who gave you permission to accept these things? Jenna would never own things like these. What exactly are you trying to say by bringing them home?"

Upon thinking back to what Zachary had said, I couldn't hold it in any longer. "Jenna is already dead! She's dead! I'm Jennifer! I'm a living, breathing human being! I have my own preferences, and I have my own life to live!

"Jenna died at 18, and I've imitated her for 18 years! Isn't that enough?"

The answer I received was a harsh slap to the face. I was knocked to the ground, and my back crashed against the memorial.

Jenna's portrait fell with a sharp crack, her dark eyes staring at me without blinking.

Mom pointed at me, shaking with rage. "How dare you… How dare you!

"If Jenna hadn't died, you would have never come into this world! What right do you have to take away the future my daughter never got to experience?"

Even though I had long known that Mom didn't love me, hearing those words blurted out still broke something inside me.

I lay sprawled on the ground, facing upward. My palm had been cut open by the broken glass from Jenna's portrait frame, and blood seeped out.

Mom sank to her knees, crying as she reached out and picked up Jenna's portrait. "My Jenna… My baby Jenna… Does it hurt? I'll move you somewhere else."

Carrying Jenna's portrait, Mom walked right past me. Not once did she spare me another glance.

Dad grabbed his coat and hurried after Mom. Soon, I heard the front door slam shut.

I slowly closed my eyes and apologized to Zachary in my heart. "I'm sorry, Zachary. I won't get to see the bright future you spoke of."

The hem of the dress Mom had burned was charred black. It now resembled withered petals. I put it on and looked toward the wide-open window.

I suddenly changed my mind in that split second. I no longer wanted to drown as Jenna had.

In the very last moment of my life, I wanted to end it the way "Jennifer" would. This was the only small act of resistance I could carry out.

I climbed onto the window ledge, then looked around the house for the last time.

Without the slightest hesitation, I closed my eyes and fell backward.

That was strange. I distinctly remembered that Jenna had been born in the early morning. If it wasn't Jenna…Then "Selena" must have been the name Mom was supposed to give me. I repeated the name "Selena Lockwood" once in my heart. After I did, I felt my very soul grow much lighter."Selena, I'm sorry," Mom said before slowly closing her eyes. The next second, the scene around me suddenly shifted.…By the time I came back to my senses, I had appeared in a hospital room once again. A pregnant woman was clutching her belly, her expression filled with pain."Why are the contractions starting now? Jenna was born in the early morning. This timing isn't right. If the baby is born at night, is it still Jenna?" the woman asked.Looking at her face, I suddenly understood—this was the day I was born, 18 years ago.And the pregnant woman was Mom.Dad stood to the side, comforting her, "Don't think about all that right now. The most important thing is to get the baby delivered safely. I

Neither Mom nor Dad attended my funeral. After fainting at the police station that day, Mom's mental state completely deteriorated, so Dad sent her to a rehabilitation facility.Mom, dressed in a hospital gown, lay on the bed. She was so thin that she looked almost like a sheet of paper, and her hair had gone entirely gray too.She looked as frail and haggard as an 80-year-old woman. When Jenna passed, Mom and Dad were just in their early 40s. Now, they were already well into their 60s.As a young child, I would go through the old family photos of my younger parents with Jenna. A quiet, hidden jealousy would rise in me—why had I never seen my parents when they were young?By the time I had grown independent, they were already very old.Due to this, for a long time, I was consumed by anxiety and fear about losing them. I never imagined I would leave before they did.Over at the rehab facility, Mom kept shouting and insisting that she wanted to see her daughter. Dad, left with no

With a sharp crack, Mom's phone fell to the ground, shattering the screen. As I looked at the picture, a wave of sorrow washed over me. The only picture of me on Mom's phone was… the one taken to confirm my identity after my death.I silently apologized to Aunt Bella. I didn't mean to make her go through all of this.Dad walked over and picked up the phone Mom had dropped. One look was all it took to shock him so hard that he turned off the phone. He turned to look at Mom's unfocused eyes. She reached out blindly and clutched Dad's arm tightly, muttering, "Fake… It's fake… Something couldn't have happened to Jenna. She only went swimming with her classmates. She was such a good swimmer. How could she have drowned?"Mom was having another episode. At the moment my death was confirmed, she mistook me for Jenna once again. My entire life—from the moment I was born until the moment I died—I had never been the real Jennifer.Dad suddenly flung her hand off. "This is Jennifer! It's J

The air in the room seemed to freeze in an instant. Mom and Dad stood there, motionless, like statues. With red-rimmed eyes, Zachary shouted in a hoarse voice, "JJ jumped from a building! She was still with us in the daytime. Why would she jump?"Mom and Dad still didn't react.Unable to hold himself back any longer, Zachary ran straight out the door. After some time, Mom slowly came back to her senses."Jennifer actually dared to jump?" She slowly sank onto the floor. "She's still trying to compete with Jenna for attention! She stole Jenna's life, and she still had the nerve to jump?"Dad opened his mouth, but not a single sound came out. All he did was slowly lean back against the wall. After another long while, Mom turned to look at Dad. "Did Bella team up with her to lie to me? Is this their way of threatening me, trying to make sure I never mention Jenna again?"That has to be the case! It has to be! That ungrateful, insatiable wretch! Why didn't I strangle her back then?"

It wasn't until night fell that Mom finally got to her feet, swaying unsteadily.Dad held her up as they walked, both moving very slowly. After getting into the car, they didn't head straight home. Instead, the destination in the GPS showed Aunt Bella's place.Dad drove in silence the entire way. Mom sat in the passenger seat, staring blankly at the pendant hanging from the rearview mirror.A family photo was tucked inside it—one of Mom, Dad, and Jenna from 20 years ago. The photo had already faded, but it still couldn't hide their happy smiles. There were countless photos like this at home. 20 years ago, cameras weren't nearly as common as they had become that day, yet Mom and Dad had taken hundreds of photos of Jenna. These days, with smartphones, taking a picture was effortless. However, there were only a handful of photos from when I was a child. And even in those, I had been dressed up to look like Jenna. I had a red bow tied atop my head, and I carried a red backpack.Mo

When I regained consciousness, I saw a young woman lying on the concrete ground. It took me a long while to realize that the body was mine.I was already dead. The next second, I felt my soul being violently pulled away. I was instantly transported to my parents' side.Mom was collapsed in front of a gravestone, sobbing uncontrollably. "Jenna, it's been 20 years, and I still can't move on. What do I do?"It turned out they had gone to visit Jenna again.Ever since I was born, my parents had visited Jenna's grave once a week without fail. But they never once brought me along. At first, I thought they were secretly going somewhere fun. So, one time, I acted playful and begged to go along too.But Mom turned right around and slapped me across the face.Back then, her eyes were bloodshot as she berated me. "You've been taking up all of our time every single day. Jenna only gets to see us once a week! It's only one day, yet you still want to ruin it? How could there be a child as se
