Chapter 2

Penulis: Greencloud
Yvette stumbled into the corner of the table and immediately burst into tears. Yves's face hardened. He caught Lucy by the arm before she could get away.

"Who taught you to hit people? Apologize to Yvette."

Lucy winced and hunched her shoulders, trying to pull free. "No."

Yves took out his phone and reopened the bidding app I'd already quit. "Then you lose your time with me next week. You can have it back when you apologize."

For a few seconds, Lucy only stared at him, as though she didn't understand what he was taking away. Then her gaze dropped to the floor.

"Daddy, I'm not bidding for you anymore."

Yves went still, his finger suspended over the screen.

Before he could respond, a nurse hurried into the room with a test report. "Ms. Langford, we just picked up an abnormality in Lucy's heart rhythm. We need to move her to the ER for observation immediately."

Lucy crumpled before the nurse had even finished speaking.

Yves and I both lunged for her. At that exact moment, Yvette pressed a hand to her side and gave a small cry of pain. Yves instinctively turned toward her, just enough to miss Lucy.

His fingertips brushed her as she fell, but didn't catch her.

She hit the floor hard.

"Move!"

The medical team swept in and rushed Lucy away. I tried to follow the gurney, only for Yves to grab my wrist.

"Why did she suddenly get so much worse?"

I tore myself free. "It wasn't sudden. The doctors warned us she could develop an arrhythmia at any time. Her latest test results have been sitting in the bidding system for a week. You never even opened them."

Yves's brow tightened slightly.

Yvette steadied herself against the table. "Yves has been busy, and there are so many attachments in that system. Jenna, you should've told him directly."

"I did. Eleven times." I looked at her. "The first time, he was helping you choose curtains. The second time, your stomach hurt. The third time, he told me that if I wanted his time, I should follow the rules and bid for it."

Yvette bit her lip. "Then you could've bid higher."

I slapped her.

Yves shoved me back so fast that my lower back struck the door handle. Pain shot through me, and for a moment my vision went black.

"Apologize."

"Not a chance."

He didn't argue. He simply took out his phone and called the finance department. "Freeze every household account under Jenna's name. Restore access when she apologizes."

For a second, I couldn't believe what I'd heard.

"That's Lucy's medical money."

"The money is still there. You're choosing not to back down." Yves checked his watch as though this were nothing more than an inconvenience in his schedule. "I'll take responsibility for Lucy. You still have to take responsibility for what you did."

The doors to the resuscitation room burst open before I could answer.

"Your daughter needs an emergency cardiac catheterization," a nurse said. "We need a $30,000 deposit immediately."

I pulled out my phone and opened the account.

The balance was zero.

Yves stood only a few feet away, waiting. He knew exactly what I would have to do.

Yvette dabbed at her tears. "Forget it, Yves. Jenna's only acting this way because she's worried about Lucy. I don't need an apology."

"She has to apologize."

The red light above the resuscitation room was still on.

I stared at it, then lowered my head.

"I'm sorry."

Something almost like a smile flickered in Yvette's eyes. Yves finally called finance and had the accounts unlocked.

I made the transfer, and the nurse hurried back inside with the payment confirmation.

Afterward, Yvette complained that her back hurt from hitting the table. Yves took her to orthopedics, and that was the last I saw of them that day.

The doctor pulled up the images for me. His expression told me enough before he even spoke.

"Her condition is worse than we expected. We need to operate as soon as possible. There's a specialist abroad, Dr. Chenault, who can take her next week, but he only has one opening. We need the deposit today to secure the spot."

I was about to tell him to take the slot when my phone vibrated.

A transaction notification filled the screen.

$800,000 had been transferred out of our household account.

Before I could even process it, another notification appeared. Yvette had posted an update.

She was sitting in the middle of a brand-new studio, smiling for the camera while Yves hung the sign behind her.

[The best gift when you're at rock bottom is someone helping you start over.]

I called him immediately.

"Did you take Lucy's surgery money to pay for Yvette's studio?"

"I'm borrowing it. I'll replace it later."

"The overseas specialist, Dr. Chenault, has one opening."

"There are local doctors. We don't have to choose the most expensive option." His tone remained maddeningly calm. "Yvette had a breakdown after you slapped her. She needed something to take her mind off it."

I gripped Lucy's test results until the paper crumpled in my hand. "So helping her feel better matters more than your daughter's life?"

"Don't twist what I'm saying. I'll get the money together for Lucy's surgery. If that slot is gone, we'll take the next one."

"She can't wait for the next one."

"Doctors always make the risks sound more serious than they are."

Yvette called to him in the background. They were about to cut the ribbon.

Yves told her he'd be right there, then said to me, "I'm opening tonight's bidding early. If you want me at the pre-op meeting, bid for my time like everyone else."

The call ended.

Almost immediately, the app sent me a notification.

[Your account has been reactivated by an administrator.]

I'd quit. He had put me back in anyway.

At eight o'clock, the only available slot appeared.

I put everything I had on it.

$300,000.

For one brief moment, the screen showed that I'd won.

Then the page refreshed.

[Yvette Xavier: $300,001]

Underneath was her note.

[I'm scared to sleep alone after the studio opening.]

  • I'm Done Bidding for His Time   Chapter 10

Six months later, Lucy and I moved south, and I returned to the architecture career I'd had before I got married. My first project back was a pediatric cardiac rehabilitation center, and when it opened, Lucy put on a red dress and did the ribbon-cutting for me. Her recovery had gone well. Most of the time she was just like any other child; only when she ran too fast did she have to stop and catch her breath.Diana still came to see her occasionally, but she always asked beforehand whether Lucy wanted a visit.Yves never appeared again. I heard he'd sold his house to repay the company's losses and started over from the bottom as a project consultant. There was no assistant arranging his schedule anymore, and no one bidding for his time. In the end, he had finally acquired an abundance of the very thing he'd once been so reluctant to give us: hours and hours of free time that nobody wanted.Yvette's studio was liquidated, and her account was permanently banned. She was held accountabl

Yvette eventually admitted to falsifying the medical opinion, deliberately manipulating the bidding system, and returned everything she'd improperly received. As part of the investigation, she turned over extensive chat logs. They documented exactly how Yves had leaked my account balance to her and given her permanent priority over every other bidder. It took only three pages of evidence to reduce his denials to silence. The first was an admin message he'd sent on the day of Lucy's Parents' Day:[She can bid $2,000 at most. Bid $6,000. She needs to learn that my time doesn't come free with the marriage.]The second was the transaction record from after Lucy's diagnosis. Yves had added $20,000 to Yvette's account, then told her to bid $15,000.The third was an admin instruction from the night before Lucy's surgery:[No matter how much Jenna Langford bids, Yvette Xavier wins.]When the judge asked whether he disputed any of the evidence, Yves sat at the defense table, his face ashen."N

Lucy was discharged before the divorce hearing. Her preschool held another Parents' Day to make up for the one she'd missed, but Yves wasn't there. This time, it wasn't because he'd chosen not to come. Lucy had told them she didn't want him there. So I was the one holding her hand when she walked into the classroom. For the day's activity, she drew two people on a sheet of paper: herself and me. When her teacher, Ms. Harper, asked why she hadn't drawn her father, Lucy gave the question serious thought before answering."Daddy used to cost money. He's too expensive now, so we're not buying him anymore."The room went quiet.I crouched beside her and wiped some paint from her fingers. "Lucy, Daddy isn't something you can buy.""Then why did he auction himself?"I had no answer for that.Neither, apparently, did Yves. He'd been listening from the other side of the glass, and although his eyes reddened, he respected Lucy's wishes and stayed outside. Before leaving, he gave Ms. Harper the p

The day the board voted, Yves was suspended from every position he held at Zeller Group, and the bidding system he'd created was shut down at the same time. Before taking it offline, Diana released the admin logs to everyone who'd had access to the system. For all Yves's talk about fairness, there had only ever been one rule that mattered, buried where no one else could see it:[Account: Yvette Xavier. Override all other bids without exception.]Yvette hadn't only displaced me. She'd overridden Diana, Caleb Mercer, and even several executives who'd placed substantial bids for meeting time with Yves. Caleb terminated their partnership on the spot, while several of the executives jointly demanded an audit.Yvette responded by taking the fight online. She claimed Yves's wife was persecuting her and insisted that every cent she'd received had been given to her willingly. Then she posted an audio recording of Yves saying, "Jenna won't leave. She'll make a fuss, then she'll come back like sh

The first thing Lucy asked for when she woke up was water. As I moistened her lips with a damp cotton swab, she looked past me toward the door."Didn't Daddy come?""He did.""Then why won't he come in?"I tucked the blanket more securely around her. "Because he wasn't a very good daddy before. If he wants another chance, he has to get back in line."Lucy thought about that for a moment. "Do we have to let him?""Why not?""I don't want him anymore."Something crashed outside the room.Yves stood on the other side of the observation window, the shattered pieces of a thermos scattered around his feet. It was the first time he'd ever heard his daughter say she didn't want him.He stayed outside her room for the next two days. Yvette called more than a dozen times, but he didn't answer once.On the third day, Lucy was moved to a regular room. Yves came in carrying a building set she loved."How about Daddy builds a castle with you?"Lucy didn't even look at him. "Do I have to bid for thi

Diana Zeller arrived at the hospital that night. She didn't ask about the shares first. Instead, she stood at the observation window for a long time, watching Lucy on the other side."Where's Yves?""With Yvette."Her expression hardened as she took out her phone. Yves answered almost immediately."Mom? What's wrong?""Your daughter is in surgery. Where are you?""Yvette couldn't breathe. I'll come over as soon as I get her settled.""Get your ass back here. Now."Diana hung up and turned to me. "Jenna, transfer the shares back to the family. I'll deal with Yves, but leaving him with nothing in the divorce isn't realistic."I slid the documents across the table. "I own twenty-seven percent of Zeller Group. Seven years ago, when the company ran into a cash crisis, my father put everything he had into saving it. Those shares belonged to the Langford family in the first place."I trusted Yves, so I never exercised my voting rights."I pulled up the bidding records, bank statements, and ho
