Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Dowe
Logan's POV

I immediately got off at the next station and took the subway back.

There, Liam was surrounded by my family on a bench on the platform. Mom held him in her arms, gently patting his back, while Dad stood on the other side, holding his hand.

Ava knelt before him, guiding him to breathe slowly. "It's okay. I'm right here with you. Look at me. Slow breaths."

Liam was crying so hard he could barely catch his breath, his fingers still clutching Ava's sleeve. She let him hold on without so much as frowning.

I stood a few feet away and watched them for a long time.

When Mom saw me, she yelled, "I thought you wouldn't come back! You knew Liam couldn't be without you, so why did you get on the train first?"

I pressed my lips together. "He pushed me."

The moment I said that, tears rolled down Liam's cheeks. "Logan, why would you lie about that? Were you upset because I wanted to go out? Was that why you deliberately shook me off?"

Ava looked up at me, her face stormy with anger.

"Liam had a panic disorderbecause of you. He could barely breathe. Instead of worrying about him, you accused him and tried to shift the blame. What happened to you, Logan?"

My eyes reddened. "I did not!"

"Enough!" Dad snapped at me. "Now is not the time to nitpick over every little thing!"

There it was again. Whatever Liam did was right, while I was wrong for even trying to defend myself.

I braced myself against the wall, my vision darkening in waves. I hadn't eaten a single thing since last night. My voice came out huskily. "I don't feel so well."

Ava frowned and reached out to steady me, but Liam suddenly hyperventilated and collapsed into her arms. "Ava, I can't breathe."

She immediately turned back to him and held him tightly. "Take it slow. I'm right here."

Mom looked worried. "Let's just go home for now. It's too crowded here. Liam will only feel suffocated."

They surrounded him and escorted him out.

Ava held him close, using her body to shield him from the crowd. Dad carried his bag and walked on his other side. Mom went ahead, looking back every few steps with a worried expression.

Not one of them spared me a glance. I wanted to follow, but my legs were growing weaker by the second. Just as I was about to collapse, a young woman held me in place.

"Are you okay? Is your blood sugar low?" she asked, genuinely concerned, and pressed a piece of chocolate into my hand.

I tore open the wrapper and put it in my mouth. Bitterness spread across my tongue. My vision was still blurry, and it took a long time before I managed to whisper a thank-you.

By the time I got home, Mom was talking to the workers installing something in the living room. "Yeah. That room."

She was pointing at my bedroom.

"Mom, what are they installing?"

She didn't even look up. "Cameras."

Her tone was casual. "Liam had two attacks over the last 24 hours because he couldn't see you. We're putting up cameras so he can check on you whenever he wants."

I looked over. There were two cameras, one installed in each corner of my room.

As the workers adjusted the camera angles, one of them muttered under his breath, "Are you keeping an eye on a prisoner or your son? It covers every damn corner."

Mom was unamused. "Excuse me? We're doing this to save our other son's life."

Liam sat on the couch, practically beaming as he hugged the tablet. The screen displayed every corner of my bedroom like an exhibition.

Ava came over and stood beside me. "It's just a couple of cameras. They won't affect your life. We'll take them down once Liam gets better. Give him a break. He's just sick."

I opened my mouth, not knowing where to start. They seemed to have forgotten that Liam had never once gone back for a follow-up appointment for his panic disorder.

His first attack happened the year we took our high school entrance exams. I had gotten into one of the top high schools in the city. The moment Liam heard the news, he had a panic disorder and collapsed on the floor, gasping for air.

The doctor initially suspected panic disorder and recommended a thorough evaluation and treatment, but Liam said I was his medicine. As long as I didn't leave him, he would be fine.

So, I gave up my place at the top high school and went to the same ordinary high school as him.

Then came the SATs. I earned the perfect score. I could've gone to the Wellington Institute of Fine Arts, but Liam had another attack. Crying, he said he couldn't bear to be separated from me.

So, I was forced to attend the same community college as him.

Since then, I had to bring Liam along whenever I had a hangout with friends or a date. Even the graduation trip Ava and I had planned had to be booked for three people instead of two.

Everyone insisted that I wait, that I be patient and put up with him. I had done just that, yet after seven years, he only became more demanding.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. It was an email from the design firm in Pronce, asking if I could still start on the originally agreed date.

Six months ago, I won an award at a national design competition. One of the judges, a renowned designer, was impressed by my work and invited me to join the firm several times.

But with Liam's countless attacks, I hesitated.

I looked up at the camera, its red indicator light blinking. Then, I lowered my head and replied to the email, "I will be there on time."

Then, I booked the earliest flight to Villerose three days from now.

Logan's POVMom stayed in Pronce for a week. Every day, she waited for me downstairs outside the firm—sometimes with breakfast and sometimes with photos of me from when I was little. She kept telling me that she would make it up to me, that she would give me back everything that should've been mine.On the seventh day, I finally turned her away. "I don't need any of that anymore. Just go home and don't ever come back."Her eyes were red as she asked carefully, "Will you ever go back?"I shook my head."Logan, are you abandoning your dad and me for good? Your family and your home?"I looked at Mom and was reminded of something from years ago.The first time I gave up my place at my dream high school for Liam, I had hidden under my blankets and cried all night. Back then, she had told me something."You're the older brother. Liam needs you, and so do we."She said the same thing every time after that."You're the older brother. You're good at school. You still have plenty of o

Logan's POVSix months later, my parents and Ava came to Pronce.Harry found me outside the conference room. "There are three people downstairs. They've been waiting for three hours."When I went down, I almost didn't recognize Mom. She had lost tons of weight, and her hair had turned white. As soon as she saw me, tears rolled down her face."Logan."She took two steps toward me, then stopped. Perhaps she had finally remembered that she no longer had the right to approach me at will.Ava stood behind her. She had also lost some weight. In her hand was the sketchbook I left behind at home. "Logan, we're not here to bother you. We just want to see you."I said nothing and led them to a nearby cafe.Mom started crying the moment she sat down. "Logan, I know I messed up. Liam was never sick. He fooled all of us."I looked at her, unfazed. "So?"She looked taken aback. "What?"I stirred my coffee. "Are you insinuating that if he had been sick, what you guys did would've been just

Logan's POVBy the time the plane landed, the wound on my arm was burning. It had hurt the entire night, but the moment my feet touched the ground at the airport in Pronce, I felt lighter than I ever had.I purchased a new phone and contacted the firm. The person who came to pick me up was Harry Lowe, one of the judges from the design competition six months ago. When he saw the blood-stained gauze on my arm, he frowned. "You should go to the hospital first. We can talk about work tomorrow."I instinctively refused, "No, it's okay. I can go straight to the office."He gave me a clear look of disapproval. "If you don't take care of your health, you can't pursue your dreams."I smiled faintly, warmth spreading through my chest. After we left the hospital, Harry drove me to the serviced apartment. "Want me to help bring your luggage inside?"I shook my head. "I can handle a few bags."He nodded and handed me the keys. "Come to the office at 10:00 am tomorrow. If you're tired, you

In college, classmates would ask him to join clubs and go to events. But every time he went out, Liam insisted on coming along. He would suddenly feel sick whenever Logan was talking to someone else. If he didn't reply to his messages, he would spam him with calls.Whenever everyone was having the most fun, he would grab Logan and insist that they leave early. After enough times, people stopped inviting Logan altogether.Angela searched through Logan's contacts for a long time and could only find a few names he hadn't spoken to in years. She called them one by one, only to receive a bunch of similar answers."Sorry. I have no idea.""Oh, we haven't been in touch in ages.""I thought Logan Jackson was always with that little brother of his."She gripped the phone, unable

Third-Person POVThe next morning, when Liam woke up, he didn't call Logan right away like he usually did. Instead, he picked up his phone and opened the camera feed in his room.On the screen, the blankets were raised in the shape of a person. His phone was lying beside the pillow, and his location still showed him in bed.Liam watched him for a while, then smiled in satisfaction.Their mother, Angela Brown, placed a grilled cheese sandwich onto his plate. "Is Logan not up yet?"He shook his head. "No. He was probably tired from yesterday. We should let him sleep in."Angela looked somewhat relieved. "He promised you yesterday that he'd always stay by your side. Once you move to Perkson, make sure you treat him well. Don't give him a hard time."Liam nodded without much interest. He didn't think Logan could cause any more trouble. After all, he had his ID and personal records. His phone had the monitoring app installed, and they even had a tracking chip implanted in him.At t

Logan's POVI struggled frantically. "Are you guys insane?"Mom held my arm down with all her strength. "Logan, for the sake of Liam, just put up with it. If he knows where you are, he won't have another attack."Dad pinned my shoulders in place. "As long as you stay by Liam's side every day, it makes no difference whether you have this thing or not."Ava's face was tense as she tightened her grip on me. "It'll be over soon, Logan. For Liam, just suck it up."They had told me to suck it up when they forced me to give up my spot at my desired high school and when I had to give up my dream of attending the Wellington Institute of Fine Arts. Now, they wanted to turn me into Liam's pet, keeping me chained to his side. Even then, they were telling me to put up with it and suck it up.When the needle pierced my skin, I stopped struggling. Looking at Mom's and Dad's distorted faces, I recalled memories from when I was little.Whenever I was scared of getting a shot, they would hold me
