Chapter 3

Author: Washing Wheat
That was exactly when Matteo stayed by my side and helped me get through that period of time.

With no one else on my side, he was the only person who believed in me, constantly reminding me that I had done nothing wrong.

Looking back now, of course he believed me. After all, he was the one who did those things.

I admitted I was deeply moved at the time.

That was the turning point that brought us so much closer. I opened up to him about everything, and he was always there, offering comfort over and over again.

But now, the reality of it cut through me.

Matteo had written impatiently in the post, "Honestly, shouldn't she be thanking me for getting her that grad school slot? Instead, she acted all miserable all day long. I don't even know who she's trying to put on a show for.

"If I hadn't helped her out, what would she even be doing right now? Unemployed and relying on me for handouts?"

Someone in the comments section asked, "But what does that have to do with making her fall for you? It doesn't sound like she actually caught feelings because of that."

Matteo replied almost immediately, "Spot on. She was so obsessed with that whole drama that she didn't even realize I was only looking out for her because I wanted to date her.

"And more importantly, my whole objective from the start was to get my childhood friend's crush to stop liking my girlfriend. But even after her reputation went down the drain, the guy still wouldn't let her go. So, I had to pivot.

"If you ask me where that guy messed up, it's that he was way too cautious. He didn't dare make a real move—exactly how I used to be with my childhood friend.

"But I guess that's normal. That's just how a guy acts when he genuinely loves a woman. He was worried about my girlfriend being depressed, so he kept getting people to deliver gifts to her. Luckily, I intercepted every single one of them."

I had absolutely no idea Tatum had ever done any of that.

Then, Matteo's tone took a sharper turn. "But that wasn't going to cut it. My goal wasn't just to date her. I needed him to give up on her completely.

"At the time, my girlfriend couldn't handle the passive-aggressive bullying from her roommates and classmates anymore, so she wanted to move out of the dorms. To afford it, she took on a new tutoring gig.

"The kid she was tutoring came from an incredibly wealthy family. They treated her well and would even send a driver to pick her up from campus before every session.

"I didn't do much. I just made sure to walk past the pickup spot with my roommates one day right as she was getting into the luxury car.

"Moving out of the dorms out of nowhere, combined with getting into a luxury car? For a student on financial aid, it didn't take much for people to jump to conclusions.

"As soon as I got back that day, I posted about it anonymously on the school forum. The rumors spread like wildfire, and within hours, people were claiming she was a sugar baby.

"She had plenty of guys pursuing her, so I intentionally wrote that she loved leading people on. Between that and the previous scandal, she was already totally isolated. Her reputation completely tanked overnight."

When I read those words, my grip tightened around the phone to fight back the rising wave of nausea.

As graduation approached, I had thought I would finally escape the judging eyes and start fresh. But what I got instead was even more people insulting me.

During those days, no matter where I went, the people around me threw nothing but malicious, suggestive looks my way.

Moments I had desperately tried to bury came rushing back to my mind.

When I walked down the street, I would hear people whisper and point behind my back.

When I ate in the cafeteria, people would recognize me and pointedly move to another table.

During our first week back, Samuel and I took our time exploring the hometown we hadn't seen in a year. Some of my old college classmates heard I was back and invited me out to dinner. When I arrived, I was completely caught off guard to see my college best friend, Tiffany. The moment she saw me, she said, "Leah, I know everything now. I never should have doubted you. I actually begged the others to invite you out today. I was so afraid you wouldn't want to see me."How could I ever blame her?Only now did I learn that she later joined a top company in the industry and was doing very well.A weight I had carried for years finally lifted from my chest.Naturally, the conversation around the table eventually drifted to Matteo. One of my former roommates asked, "Have you guys heard? Matteo's post was dug up and reposted everywhere.""What post?" someone asked."The Q&A post where he admitted he only pursued Leah for the sake of his childhood friend. He orchestrated so much malici

I accepted Samuel's invitation. To my surprise, Matteo didn't leave Yurestia. Instead, he kept showing up in my orbit—whether I was in class, studying in the library, or working my part-time job.He told me he was going to win me back all over again.I ignored him. I truly had no intention of ever looking back.On the day of the book club meeting, Samuel came to pick me up at my dorm. Matteo was waiting outside too.Without a moment's hesitation, I walked straight toward Samuel.Seeing another guy by my side for the first time since he arrived in Yurestia, Matteo snapped. He rushed over and grabbed my arm. "Leah, who is this?"Before I could say a word, Samuel spoke up first. "Her suitor."Matteo froze.Taking the cue, I added, "Yes. We're about to make it official, so please keep your distance and stop bothering me."I took Samuel's hand, and we walked away together, only letting go once Matteo was completely out of sight."I'm so sorry about that. Thank you for covering fo

His name was Samuel Wall. He spoke softly, but there was a distinct warmth to his voice."You're Leah Lane, right?" he asked. "We attended the same class."It clicked then. He was the guy who usually sat in the front row, though I had never actually spoken to him before.I took the bottle of water from him, and he gave me a brief smile before walking away. That evening, we gathered on the beach for a game of Truth or Dare, and I happened to be the very first target. One of my classmates grinned. "Tell us about your past relationships."I offered a faint smile. "I've only been in one. We broke up. My ex only dated me to clear out a romantic rival for the woman he actually loved. Once I found out, I walked away."The laughter and chatter suddenly fell silent for a few seconds.Samuel was the first to break the silence. "It's in the past now. Things will only get better from here."He was right. It was in the past.Truth be told, I hadn't always been this strong. The night I fir

As the plane broke through the cloud layer, the sunlight suddenly became blindingly bright.I leaned against the window and closed my eyes.It was evening local time when we landed. I dragged my two suitcases out of the airport, looking around at the Yurestian signs with a slight sense of detachment. The air carried a different scent here, though I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was.I powered on my phone, and notifications instantly flooded the screen like a tidal wave. They were all from Matteo.Dozens of WhatsApp messages, over a dozen missed calls, and a string of texts.I didn't reply to a single one.Instead, I opened the forum post again. The latest update had been posted an hour ago.All of his previous entries had been completely wiped clean, replaced by just a few brief lines."Today is our one-year anniversary, and she broke up with me. I have no idea where she went. She's completely ghosting my calls. I don't know what kind of tantrum she's throwing."I w

Back then, my reply had been, "Thank you, Ms. Roberts. Let me talk it over with my family."In reality, I hadn't talked it over with anyone. The only thing on my mind was whether Matteo would be okay with it. Would he think a year was too long? Would our relationship survive the distance? But now, I was taking it back.I deleted the draft politely declining the offer and typed out a new message. "Ms. Roberts, I want to go. Is the spot still available?"The next morning, Matteo made breakfast for me just like any other day. Before heading out the door, he ruffled my hair. "Leah, I have to travel for work for a few days, but I'll video call you. Don't be scared of being home alone."Just let the housekeeper handle the cooking. When I get back, I'll bring you that cake you love, and I'll buy you that necklace you've been eyeing forever."Our anniversary is in a few days. I'll take you on a trip then. Don't worry about anything. Just leave it all to me."Instead of giving him the

When it came to group projects, everyone in class would pair up, leaving me completely stranded. No one wanted me near their team. And during that time, Matteo was the only one who stayed by my side.In the beginning, I hadn't just sat back and taken it. But every time I tried to post evidence to clear my name, the posts were deleted almost instantly.Only now did I realize that Matteo himself was a moderator for the student forum. Manipulating campus opinion was child's play for him.The guys who used to have crushes on me changed their attitude after this incident. Fueled by the rumor mill, they went even further and began attacking me on the campus forum. Some claimed I dropped deliberate hints to string them along. Others accused me of juggling multiple guys, fabricated rumors that anyone could sleep with me for cash, and even claimed I got the grad school spot by selling my body.It wasn't until a few days later, when a post titled "Stop Slandering and Attacking My Girlfrien
