LOGINIVY’S POV
There were no security guards in front of Blackwood estate. There wasn’t any intercom either. I stood in front of the giant iron gates, looking around and trying to figure out how to get inside. Was I really supposed to knock on this heavy metal? I looked around the gate again and when I found no way open it, my answer came back to me. Yes, I was. As I stepped forward to try knocking, a computerized voice spoke from a hidden speaker near the stone wall, making me jump. "Welcome to the Blackwood Estate. Please scan your entry code now." My eyes widened. An entry code? That was when I remembered the text message Mrs. Gable had sent me this morning about a code I needed. I quickly pulled out my phone from my pocket, scrolled to her message and held the QR code up to a glass panel on the wall. A red laser scanned it with a quick beep. "Code accepted. Access granted to Ivy Hayes," the electronic voice announced. With a heavy hiss, the gates slowly swung open. "Wow," I muttered to myself as I watched them slide open. "So people really live like this in this world? Fuck poverty." I let out a deep breath and started walking up the winding driveway. When I rounded the corner and saw the actual mansion, my breath caught. The house was spectacular. It was built with smooth gray stones, soaring glass windows, and steep roofs. Perfectly manicured gardens were spread out everywhere just like it was in those luxury homes I used to see on I*******m. In front of the house were a row of shiny cars I knew cost more than I would ever make in this lifetime. The whole place was also quiet and the only audible sound was the water splashing from the marble water fountain. I looked down at the black tank top I’d tucked into a boyfriend jeans and my white sneakers. They were the best clothes I had but I still felt completely out of place. But any doubts about whether I belonged here vanished when my mind reminded me of my reality. With Helen Carter trying to chase me out of town, this job was my only option to survive. I walked up the stone steps and pressed the silver doorbell. Just as I was about to ring it a second time, the door swung open. An elderly woman stood in the doorway. She was dressed in a neat gray dress and a crisp white apron and her brown hair was resting loosely around her shoulders, a few stray pieces framing her face. She leaned slightly against the doorframe, her hands trembling just a bit as she straightened her posture to look at me. Mrs. Gable was right. This woman was too old to handle this housekeeping job. At first, her eyes were strict as they ran down my cheap clothes, assessing me. But as soon as she realized who I was, her expression softened into a warm smile. "You must be Ivy," she said, her voice surprisingly gentle. "Come in, dear. I’ve been expecting you." "Thank you, ma'am," I told her as I stepped inside the house. The entrance hall was just as beautiful as the outside. The floors were a polished white marble that reflected the light from a massive crystal chandelier hanging from the high ceiling. It was beautiful but it was also so quiet that I could hear my own breathing. "I just realized I didn’t introduce myself. I am Mrs. Reynolds, the head housekeeper," she said as we kept walking. “I’m Ivy Hayes”. I told her, still looking around the house. “Yeah. Mrs. Gable told me. Come this way. Let’s talk in the small sitting room." I followed her down a long hallway lined with oil paintings into a cozy room with leather chairs and a roaring fireplace. Mrs. Reynolds motioned for me to sit and took the chair across from me and then picked up a manila folder. "So, Ivy," She began, opening the folder. "Mrs. Gable spoke very highly of you. She told me you are hardworking, honest, and very patient. How old are you, dear?" "I'm twenty," I answered, sitting up a little straighter to try and look professional. She nodded, noting it down on the paper in the folder. "Twenty. You are still quite young. Tell me honestly, have you ever worked as a full-time nanny before?" "No, ma'am, I haven't," “What about babysitting?” “No”. I said, trying to keep my voice steady so I don’t sound defensive, even as a frown crossed her features. "I’ve only worked at Mrs. Gable’s diner but I used to look after the regular customers' kids sometimes. I’m also a very fast learner”. Mrs. Reynolds tapped her pen against the folder, studying my face for a few seconds. "While I appreciate your honesty, I want you to understand that taking care of a one year old child isn’t going to be as easy as it sounds. Especially for someone who has no experience with kids. I need to be sure that you’ll know how to handle her getting sick in the middle of the night or crying for hours nonstop”. "Okay, I know I’ve never dealt with a baby before but this is something I can do," I admitted, looking straight into her eyes. “If she won't stop crying, I’d probably check the basics first. See if she needs a diaper change or a bottle or something. But if she feels hot or seems like she's in pain, I wouldn't hesisate to draw Mr. Blackwood’s attention to it. I’m going to do my very best to make sure she’s comfortable and happy”. Mrs. Reynolds stopped tapping her pen. Her expression didn't change right away but she nodded slowly and wrote something down. "How do I know you’re not lying, dear? What if all you want is the money and you will only pretend to care for her when Mr. Blackwood is around? Why should I trust you, Miss Hayes?”DAMIEN’S POVAlthough he had liked Serena while she was alive, he also knew I had never been in love with her.“Nanny,” I responded, flipping through the pages and pretending to read my mother's interview so I wouldn't show how uncomfortable this conversation was making me.“Nanny? A nanny that I easily mistook for your girlfriend? Especially since you have a reputation for being an arrogant dick, that's a bit of a problem, don’t you think?”“Am I paying you to be my therapist or to take care of my nanny?”“Well.” He sighed, rising to his feet knowing he wouldn’t get a word out of me. “I don’t know much about what's going on between you two, but I know you definitely have a thing for her. Which is why I’m going to personally make sure she looks absolutely perfect for your taste.” He threw a wink at me that actually made me chuckle, reminding me why he was the only high school friend I still kept around.I went through my emails, responding to messages from my assistant, the chief oper
DAMIEN’S POVAs Mark pulled up to the curb of Maurice’s exclusive boutique, I couldn’t help but ask myself the same question I’d been silently asking myself all through the ride here. What on earth are you doing, Damien?I’d never cared how Mrs. Reynolds dressed to my parents' house, but here I was, about to buy clothes for this woman beside me just so she could look presentable enough to meet my parents. And the reason behind my decision scared me the most.Since I’d decided that I could no longer fight the strong attraction I had for this woman, a part of me hoped that if she looked like someone from our world, maybe my parents wouldn’t have too many problems with her. Even though I largely doubted it.Ava was sleeping in her infant seat. After I’d played with her enough, she surprisingly didn’t want to leave my arms, so I fed her and waited till she fell asleep before placing her back in her seat.I did all of this while avoiding looking at Ivy, purely because of how fucking good s
IVY’S POVDamien was leaning against the car, his phone pressed to his right ear as he barked orders to whoever was on the call with him. He wasn't wearing his usual intimidating suits or corporate fits.Instead, he wore a cream-colored, knitted sweater with the sleeves pushed up to his forearms, revealing the tattoos wrapped around his skin and the prominent lines of his wrists. He had on dark tailored trousers and clean white sneakers, and his messy dark hair fell slightly over his forehead in a way that looked effortlessly handsome. My heart lurched against my chest as I couldn’t tear my eyes away from him. I almost cried at how unfairly good he looked right now.As if sensing my presence, Damien turned his head, his eyes locking instantly with mine. It was airy around us, but it still felt like oxygen had been sucked out of the atmosphere, leaving a suffocating tension behind.I watched his gaze slowly travel down my white tank top, lingering on the curve of my waist and the fit o
IVY’S POVI adjusted the straps of my white ribbed tank top, which I’d tucked into my favourite and honestly, the only high-waisted blue jeans I owned.Standing in front of the bathroom mirror, I pulled my hair back into a neat, high ponytail and smoothed down a few stray baby hairs.I looked nice and simple, but I didn’t know if I looked perfect enough for this trip, even though I was only going there as a nanny.A heavy knot of worry tightened in my stomach.I was about to spend three days at the Blackwood family’s main residence. Just the thought of meeting and spending time with one of the most powerful and influential families in the country made the chills roll down my spine.I’d done a bit of research about them while I ate my breakfast. They were old-money royalty, especially since one of their great-grandfathers had been a former president of the United States. They had two sons, Damien Blackwood being the first son and Lawrence Blackwood, the second son. They were both hot a
The thought remained on my mind as I moved to the toilet to brush my teeth and take a piss. When I was done, I decided to head downstairs to break the news to Ivy whom I was no longer going to fire anymore. Not after everything she told me yesterday, my conscience won’t let me sleep at night.I would have to try my best to control my actions and thoughts so I could keep my relationship with her professional. It was just a kiss by the way and nothing more. Even if it meant letting different girls suck me off every night to get her off my mind, I was ready to do it.My parents’ call this morning also made me realize just how risky starting anything with her will be.With my father having me followed, it will be difficult to hide her from them and they would never accept her. One, it was too soon. No matter how much they pretended otherwise, my parents cared more about the reputation of our family than my happiness which was why they made me marry Serena in the first place when I wasn’t
DAMIEN’S POV I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing from my desk but before I could get to it, the call went off. With a sigh, I rubbed my face and stretched the stiffness from my body before walking over to my desk. As soon as I picked up my phone, memories of last night came rushing back. My plan immediately after I got home was to get a decent amount of sleep and then spend time with Ava and the new nanny. But that plan went out of the window the minute I saw the lady who had been haunting my mind throughout last night in my house. And because I couldn't concentrate knowing she was still under the same roof as me, I decided to overwork myself. I did all of that only for her to still walk into this same study. She had no idea what she did to me. While she stood there challenging me, all I could think about was how beautiful she was. The worst part was that everything she had told me was definitely correct. I was too angry at her for entering the master's bedroom that
