Chapter 3

Autor: Jersey Wind
On the day university application submissions opened, Derek trended across social media. It was all because the Hugh family flaunted their son’s acceptance into a prestigious university by buying up coverage across major media outlets.

In the news footage, Derek wore a crisp white shirt and offered a humble smile to the cameras. When the reporter asked if there was anyone special he wanted to thank, he glanced at Eliza beside him and said, “I’d like to thank my family and my girlfriend.”

Eliza had received early admission to Colombo University’s School of the Arts. Standing side by side in front of the lens, they looked every bit like a golden couple.

The Hugh family even arranged an exclusive interview for Derek. Throughout the piece, my name was brought up repeatedly as the heiress of the Roberts family, who had desperately pursued Derek for years, only to be rejected right after our SATs.

The comment section mocked me.

[The pathetic simp finally got dumped.]

[She tried so hard and still failed. How ironic.]

[Derek and Eliza are the true match made in heaven.]

I didn’t bother responding. Instead, I opened my laptop and submitted my transcripts and research papers directly to Colombo University’s Honors Research Institute. Less than ten minutes after sending the email, a reply landed in my inbox.

[Dear Miss Roberts, congratulations. Following evaluation by the review committee, we cordially invite you to join the Algorithm Research Project at Colombo University.]

I looked at the screen and smiled calmly. They all assumed I was just a helpless girl who had to cling to the Hugh family. What they didn’t know was that I had secretly built my own tech empire long ago.

Back in my sophomore year of high school, I registered a business under the anonymous name “Star”. Under that persona, I took on complex projects, led research and development, and filed multiple patents.

Now, Star was Hugh Corporation’s largest overseas technology supplier. The Hugh family simply had no idea that the person behind it was me.

As for Julian, his test scores looked ordinary on paper. However, standardized testing was never where his true talent lay.

I forwarded his portfolio along with my submission to Colombo University’s advanced research lab. Three days later, the lab sent back a direct invitation.

[Mr. Grey, we were impressed by the signal recognition model you submitted. We would love to officially invite you to join our lab as a specially recruited talent.]

I took a screenshot of the invitation and texted it to Julian. He stared at the screen for a long time before looking up at me.

“I got in?”

“Of course.”

“But my scores…”

“Colombo University values real talent, not the labels other people put on you.”

He looked up, the small red light on his hearing aid blinking softly. “Why are you helping me?”

I met his gaze and teased, “Didn’t you say you wanted to go to the same university as me?”

The tips of Julian’s ears flushed red.

After that day, Julian and I walked to school together. Just as we reached the school gates, Derek and Eliza stood in our way.

Eliza clung tightly to Derek’s arm, wearing a sweet, gentle smile. “Sofia, I heard that both you and Julian got into Colombo University! Congratulations!”

Though she offered her congratulations, she didn’t look genuine.

Derek sneered as he sized us up with contempt. “You actually went through with it? Sofia, are you really throwing away everything just to spite me? And to think someone like Julian had the nerve to apply to Colombo University?”

I pulled up the official admission emails on my phone and held the screen right to his face.

“Look closely,” I said. “I was recruited by the Honors Research Institute, and Julian was personally invited by their advanced research lab. As for you two…”

I shifted my gaze to Eliza. “One of you got in through the arts quota, and the other is just a standard applicant. I'm sure you can figure out who among us here got in through connections.”

Derek’s expression turned hideous.

Eliza bit her lower lip, tears welling up in her eyes in an instant. “Sofia, do you have to speak so harshly? I know you’re upset because Derek rejected you, but…”

Her voice wasn’t loud, yet a crowd of surrounding students had begun to gather.

Derek immediately stepped in front of her, shielding her behind him. “Sofia, apologize to Eliza right now.”

“On what grounds?” I countered.

“Because you still want to marry me!”

I chuckled coldly. “Rest assured, Derek. I would rather marry a dog than you.”

Snickers broke out among the surrounding crowd.

Derek’s face instantly flushed red with rage. He took a step forward, only to be cut off as Julian stepped between us.

As Julian, with his slender figure, shielded me in quiet defiance, Derek glared at him with a cruel, condescending smirk. “What’s this? Are you trying to play the hero, deaf boy? Do you even know what you’re doing?”

Derek was officially arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon and intentional harm. That very evening, news of the Hugh family’s bankruptcy spread across the entire city. The so-called main characters the comments referred to had veered off their original fate.Even the voices that used to slander me had changed.[Who would’ve thought that Sofia never actually had feelings for Derek?][She wasn’t pursuing the male lead; she was pursuing the real power player standing behind him!][She chose him ten years ago. This is redemption!][So we misunderstood all those scenes before?]After that, I didn’t look at them anymore.I helped Julian into the car and personally bandaged his arm. The wound wasn’t too deep, but it was long. The doctor said it needed a few stitches.Throughout the entire process, he didn’t utter a single sound. Only after the doctor left did he lower his head and look at me.“Why did you say…”“Say what?”“That I’m yours.”I paused whatever I was d

Derek’s face turned pale.Julian rushed over, pulling me up and tightly into his arms. His arm was bleeding, yet his body was shaking.I could feel his suppressed, heavy breathing. It was as if, until that very moment, he had finally shed all pretense. He was no longer that quiet, timid, deaf boy who silently endured everyone’s bullying. He was a wolf fiercely guarding his prize. He glared dead straight at Derek on the ground, his eyes devoid of any warmth.I raised my hand and gently patted his back. “I’m fine.”Instead of loosening his grip, he held me even tighter.“Nothing can happen to you,” he said. His voice was low and raspy yet so clear that my heart ached. The police sirens echoed down the street shortly after. Once the officers arrived on the scene, they handcuffed Derek on the spot.As he was forced into the police car, he thrashed and struggled.“Sofia, you’ll regret this! I won’t let you get away with this!”I stood there, watching the police car vanish around

The comments froze. Then, exclamation marks flooded the screen as all hell broke loose.[Ah!][Bankrupt in ten minutes? Is this real?][Now this is true domination!][Where’s that person who called Julian a loser earlier? Step out now!][However arrogant Derek was earlier, he looks hilarious right now!]Derek sat on the ground, his face deathly pale. Like a madman, he grabbed tightly onto his father’s pant leg.“Father, do something! You said the Hugh family would never fall! You said the Grey family wouldn’t care about a missing kid!”Mr. Hugh didn’t respond. He simply stared at Julian, finally realizing what he had missed out on.The boy, whom he had treated as a driver’s son, was actually the true heir to the Grey family. Yet he had personally driven Julian away, humiliated him, and trampled on his dignity. He had even forced Julian to get down on his knees and bark like a dog.Mr. Hugh spun around abruptly and rushed straight in front of me.“Miss Roberts! This is all a

Julian opened the box. Inside lay a black onyx signet ring, and engraved on the inner side of the band was the letter J for Julian. The butler explained in a low voice, “This was left behind specifically for you by your grandmother. Before she passed, she kept saying your name.”Julian stared at the ring, his eyes slowly turning red. I reached out and held his wrist gently. He turned his head to look at me.Watching his lips, I said slowly, “You still have a family. They’ve been searching for you for a very long time.”Julian hesitated. “What about you?”His voice was incredibly soft.I was momentarily taken aback. “I’m right here, of course.”He lowered his gaze, turning his hand over to interlock his fingers tightly with mine. His grip was intense. It was almost as if he were terrified I would vanish in the very next second.Seeing the scene unfold, Derek’s face turned even uglier. It seemed he had finally realized what he had just done. He had not only humiliated Julian, but

Silence filled the space. The smug expression on Derek’s face froze, inch by inch. Eliza’s eyes widened even more, as if she could not comprehend what the butler had just said. The Grey family was New City’s wealthiest tycoon, the top of the upper class. Their business empire stretched across the globe. A single standard project from them was enough to send local prominent families scrambling and competing for it.Compared to the Grey family, the Hugh family was nothing. Yet right now, the Grey family’s butler was addressing Julian as sir.Dumbfounded, Mr. Hugh asked, his lips trembling, “S-Sir?”The butler ignored everyone else and looked only at Julian.“Sir, your father has been searching for you for eighteen years. Back then, after your mother gave birth to you, you were taken by mistake, and following an accident, you ended up on the streets.“We searched the entire country, and it was only recently that we confirmed your identity through a DNA test. Your father is critical

Julian didn’t answer as he couldn’t hear clearly.Derek, however, seemed to have found a new form of entertainment. He suddenly reached out and yanked the hearing aid straight off Julian’s ear.“You can’t hear, can you? Then I’ll make sure you can’t hear a thing.”With the hearing aid yanked off, blood immediately seeped from Julian’s ear. His body swayed slightly, but he still didn’t make a sound.Derek threw the hearing aid onto the ground and brought his foot down, stomping on it viciously until it crunched. Just like that, the device that had accompanied Julian for so many years shattered into several pieces. The floating comments instantly boiled over.[Yeah! Put the supporting character in his place!] [Well done, Derek! Show him who you are.][I hope the female supporting character knows who she shouldn’t be messing with now.]In a fit of fury, I stepped up behind Derek and kicked him hard in the back of his knee.Caught off guard, Derek lost his balance, and his knees
