Chapter 2

作者: Mohini
The next day, Dr. Galvan called me in.

"Mr. Tuttle, why did you suddenly decline taking the medication? You still need pre-operative treatment for a bone marrow transplant," he asked in utter disbelief.

"I don't have the money," I replied flatly.

At that, the nurses around me threw me doubtful looks.

After all, as Joanna's husband, if I wanted the moon, she'd find a way to get it for me.

Only I knew that my bank card had been frozen, and finding another suitable donor match was unrealistic.

When I left the hospital, Joanna's driver, Donny Peterson, opened the car door for me.

"Ms. Lockwood says you're to go to the company and apologize right away."

When I arrived at the company, the employees behind me were buzzing with gossip.

"Even someone who used to throw his weight around got put in his place by Marcus, huh?"

"No wonder Mr. Tuttle suddenly stopped kicking up a fuss. Marcus must have something on him, or Ms. Lockwood finally laid down the law."

"Mr. Tuttle used to be a real force to be reckoned with, but now he's a total pushover."

For someone who used to cling to my pride so fiercely, this kind of backbiting was more agonizing than death itself.

Marcus had his men surround me, then, with a pained look, said, "Mr. Tuttle, it's the unanimous opinion of everyone here that your past conduct has done far too much damage to the company's image. Therefore, we must ask you to apologize to each of us individually."

I took a deep breath and then bowed respectfully.

"Everyone, I'm sorry for all the trouble I've caused you in the past."

Marcus shook his head and said, "An apology like that won't come across as sincere to anyone. You'd better get on your knees."

My fists tightened at once, and I came dangerously close to losing it.

"Why you—"

"Eric, just do what Marcus says."

Joanna's voice sounded from behind me.

I turned my head in disbelief.

I remembered how I'd tormented Billy Ray—the college guy she'd cheated with—until the college forced him to drop out. His parents had shown up armed, demanding I kneel and apologize.

Joanna, who had doted on Billy, uncharacteristically chose to side with me.

"That's just how Eric is. Since I'm the one who spoiled him rotten, I can clean up after him too. You want him to apologize? Over my dead body will he do that."

She took them all on with her bare hands. Her head was bashed open, blood pouring and pooling across the ground.

Yet, she was now condescendingly ordering me to kneel for Marcus.

My breath caught in my throat. Then, I forced the words out through clenched teeth, "I'm not doing that."

Marcus let out a self-deprecating laugh.

"Ms. Lockwood, it seems Mr. Tuttle doesn't think he did anything wrong. Figures. Who am I to demand an apology from him? For all I know, I'll be his next target."

At that, Joanna frowned warily. When she looked at me again, her gaze was sharper than ever.

"I was wondering why you suddenly changed. I actually thought you'd turned over a new leaf. Turns out you were just biding your time to set Marcus up. I'm warning you—if I can spoil you, I can do the same for somebody else!"

With that, she roughly grabbed a fistful of my hair and jammed her foot into the back of my knee. In the struggle, she ripped out a big clump of my hair.

Everyone gasped.

Joanna stood frozen, staring at me in shock.

"What's going on?"

I stood there, at a loss for words.

It must have been because I'd suddenly stopped my medication, so my illness had gotten worse again.

I opened my mouth to tell the truth, but Marcus' cry of pain drew Joanna's attention.

"Ms. Lockwood, I think I'm allergic to Mr. Tuttle's cologne. My head hurts so much."

The next second, Joanna shoved me so hard that I nearly stumbled. Then, she said with disgust written all over her face, "You planned this too, didn't you? Get out of my company right now!"

Under the mocking gazes of the employees, I picked up the clumps of hair I'd lost from the floor. Only after I turned around did the tears I'd been holding back finally come streaming down.

Just as I stepped into the elevator, my phone buzzed with a notification that my mother, Anita Carey, was in critical condition.

Three million dollars suddenly appeared in my bank account. It was from Joanna, but all I gave her back was divorce papers.Joshua came to see me repeatedly, saying Joanna refused to sign. When Aurora found out, she personally took the divorce papers to Joanna's company. However, Joanna still refused to sign, and the two of them tore into each other. The whole thing blew up into a huge scandal.Everyone clicked their tongues and gossiped."And here I thought Joanna was so cool and above it all. Who would have thought she would be the one desperate to win Eric back after everything she did?""Honestly, that's downright shameless. She was the one who humiliated Eric in public, yet she's now clinging to him for dear life and refusing to divorce him. I didn't know she had it in her to be this shameless.""She should just let Eric go already!"Aurora returned with scratches all over her face."Joanna won't sign, so I'll help you take it to court."But after some back and forth, th

Joanna had said those words to me years ago—at our wedding, on our anniversaries, in bed.It wasn't until a scandal about her and a young man came out that it shattered the dream I had woven around myself. She could easily fall in love with anyone. At first, I didn't know any better. After all, I was young and fearless. Thus, I made quite a name for myself in high-society circles, tearing apart homewreckers.Everyone knew I was a force to be reckoned with. But later, I realized that I had overestimated myself and underestimated Joanna. So, I often told myself not to believe a single word that came out of her mouth. It was the same now, and that was why I almost laughed when I heard what she said."Joanna, I really admire how you can make every lie sound like the truth. Also, you don't need to go to such great lengths racking up good karma on me. You must be tired from all the acting, as am I."The moment the words left my mouth, Joanna roared like a madwoman, "Eric, I'm telling

My former boss, Aurora Reid, pulled me out of the river and rushed me straight to the hospital. My lungs were full of water, and on top of that, my condition had worsened after being off my medication. I was barely clinging to life."It's not like I have any chance of making it anyway. Maybe I should just—"Aurora sprinted after the gurney, panting and roaring, "No! The doctor can operate on you right away!"A few hours later, the infection in my lungs gradually subsided, and I managed to open my eyes.To be honest, I never expected that the person I'd think of on the brink of death would turn out to be my boss from years ago."Thank you," I said.Aurora was shaking with panic. The phone on the table was replaying the live stream in which I'd been humiliated.Aurora hesitated, then asked, "How could you not tell me when you were going through something like this? You should never have gone begging to Joanna."Mom had said the same thing while she was alive, but I just wouldn'

Marcus clutched his cheek in shock."Ms. Lockwood…"Joanna's eyes were bloodshot, the veins on her forehead throbbing with rage."Marcus, how dare you show your face here! Why did you keep hiding Eric's illness from me and just stand by watching me hurt him? What were you playing at?"By now, Marcus was weeping, the picture of wounded innocence."I-I thought it was Mr. Tuttle's secret, so I didn't dare breathe a single word of it."Joanna let out a laugh of sheer disbelief at his absurd excuse. She closed her eyes in despair, then said, "Then why did you agree to donate your bone marrow, only to back out at the last moment? Answer me!"At the mention of this, Marcus suddenly felt deeply wronged."Whether I donate or not is my choice. Besides, I love you too much—there was no way I could save Mr. Tuttle. I wanted to keep you for myself."Joanna froze. If she hadn't been trying to spite me, she never would have picked Marcus out of the impoverished students to take those intima

Joanna's mind went completely blank. It took her several tries of refocusing her gaze before she could make out the patient's name—Eric Tuttle."E-Eric has leukemia?"In an instant, she recalled how I had been losing handfuls of hair and the time she vaguely saw me with a nosebleed. But she had assumed it was just because I was stressed."Eric, you silly man! Why didn't you tell me?"Now when she thought about it again, she had frozen my bank card and even humiliated me in front of so many people. Someone who was already suffering as much as I was should surely hate her very much, right?Joanna clenched her fist before she could stop herself and slammed it hard into the wall, instantly splitting her knuckles open. She was shaking all over, her vision going blurry.Looking at the blank phone screen, she felt her heart start to race with panic again. She had no choice but to call a private investigator."Yes, you have to find Eric right away. I can't wait any longer."Just then,

Joanna was about to open the car door when a yell from her assistant, Timothy Hoyt, made her freeze."What did you say?" she asked. On the phone Timothy was holding out to her, a replay of the livestream that had just aired was playing."Ms. Lockwood, Mr. Tuttle really did jump into the river with his phone. I think I also heard some commotion coming from the riverbank just now."After Joanna took the phone and looked at it, she was completely frozen. Without time to think, she hurriedly dashed toward the riverbank. However, the calm surface of the river made her heart skip a beat."Eric, have you lost your mind? Where the hell are you?"As she spoke, she lunged to jump into the river in a frenzy of despair. But Marcus grabbed hold of her at once."Ms. Lockwood, you actually believe Mr. Tuttle would pull such an outrageous stunt? How could someone as proud and stubborn as he possibly jump into the river?"Joanna froze, finding Marcus' argument sound. After all, everyone in the
