Chapter 3

Aвтор: E. L. Knox
That night, I went to the Moon Goddess Temple to attend the prep meeting for the New Moon Ceremony. I'd barely reached the gate when Drake rose from a lounge chair off to the side.

"There you are." He lifted a glass of wolfblood wine, smiling like he'd already won. "Aria, I knew you'd show. Next time, just call me. No need for a staged 'chance meeting.' I'll come for you next Friday."

I didn't even look at him. I headed for the elders' hall.

He stepped in front of me halfway down the hallway and gave a helpless shrug.

"Aria, be reasonable. The High Council has already reclaimed half of your father's lands. One offering in here could buy your apartment. You came to a premium event like this just to see me? Do you even know the entry fee? Imagine how your father would feel."

Dad hated excess, sure. But Damien's privileges didn't come with limits. Last month, our son's naming rite used three ancient altars.

Tonight, they were allocating rare offerings. Damien had told me to request the Moonstone for our son's first full-moon blessing.

"Move," I said coldly. "You're in my way!"

Drake froze for a second, then his tone turned sharp. "Drop it. You expect me to believe you're here for the rite? Come on. Isabella's upstairs in the VIP lounge. You two should meet, since you'll be living together."

"Oh? Is this Ms. Bennett?" Isabella appeared as if she'd been waiting for a cue.

She wore a robe crusted with silverwork that flashed under the moonlight. Four-inch rhinestone heels clicked across the stone as she stopped in front of me, let her gaze skim from my hair to my boots, and curved her mouth into a practiced smile.

"I heard Ridgefield's in a rough patch," she said, sipping moonlight wine.

"Family is family, though." Her smile turned syrupy. "Drake says we're picking you up next week. Once you're in the territory, just treat me like a sister. I'll look after you."

She pulled a credit card from her clutch. "Here. A supplementary card. The PIN is Drake's birthday. The limit's not high, but it should be enough to buy some clothes. You need something a bit nicer. This outfit is... Hmm, too plain."

Drake chimed in. "Isabella's thought of everything. Look at you. You don't even have a proper dress. And that necklace... is made of iron? Aria, come on, be realistic."

I touched the chain at my throat.

To anyone else, it looked like a plain, black chain. In truth, it was forged from meteoric iron Damien spent three years tracking down, then warded by a witch.

On the inside, it was engraved in Lupine script: Eternal Guard.

"Honey, if you're short on silver, I'll loan you some," Isabella said sweetly. "No interest. We're practically family."

"Honey?" I repeated.

"Not used to it?" She hid a mock gasp behind her fingers. "Right, maybe you haven't experienced this kind of intimacy. No worries. Next week, we'll be family."

I didn't bother answering her. I glanced at the guard behind me and said, "Slap her."

No one could call me that, except Damien.

Damien's pupils burned red, the fury of an Alpha King blazing in his eyes. After a long silence, he turned to me and asked coldly, "Mrs. Caldwell, are you thinking of leaving me?"I shook my head hard, panic rising in my chest. "Absolutely not! My heart is yours! All I want is to stay by your side, to watch the moon rise and fall through the seasons, to grow old with you, and raise a whole tumble of pups together!"His face was still stormy, so I threw my hand up like I was swearing in court. "I swear to the Moon Goddess, I won't so much as look at another alpha. If anyone tries to flirt with me, let him be cast out of his pack!"The corner of Damien's mouth curved slightly before he forced it back into a straight line. "You'd better!"Drake's head snapped up.Those were the lines he used to throw at me, and now, I was saying them to another man. Every word slid under his skin like a silver blade. He started laughing, louder and louder until tears spilled. "Aria, you're just daz

I had barely left the table for the lounge when Drake shadowed me down the hall.He had no idea he was digging his own grave.I stopped at the corner and snapped at him. "Are you out of your mind? I let you go at the Moon Goddess Temple for old times' sake. But how dare you follow me right under the Alpha King's nose? Were you trying to get yourself killed?"Drake let out a bitter laugh, his voice scraping like sandpaper. "Aria, what's the point of living without you? I've thought it over the past few days. What good is power if I can't have you with me?"A headache bloomed behind my eyes. I pressed my fingers to my temples. "Cut the act! You dumped me three years ago and marked Isabella for power! You tried to keep me as your mistress! You humiliated me again and again! Now, you want to act like you've always cared?"I lifted my hand and slapped him across the face."Get lost! Show your face here again and I'll have my guards snap your legs and ban you from the Silvermoon Coalit

Damien knew exactly what had gone on these last few days. His network reached across the entire werewolf world. His assistant had already delivered him a full report on Drake's stunt and the mess at the Moon Goddess Temple. He never brought it up, but his face stayed like stone. He slept in the study and didn't even say goodnight to me.When he came to the master bedroom, he cooed at the pup, shot me a cold glance, and left.I pretended not to care, but my stomach was in knots. I'd snuck out without guards and screwed up.On the fifth day, I caved. I carried his favorite moonlight tea into the study and set it down. "Are you still mad at me?"He glanced up, his mouth curving into a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Mrs. Caldwell, anything you want to say to me?"My heart sank. Even the way he addressed me had changed.I went soft on purpose, eyes stinging as I looked up at him. "Drake and I did have a past. I told you all of it. But we ended things three years ago. He's the on

The gate of the Northreach Dominion was even more massive than Drake imagined. The obsidian gate was carved with a crimson wolf sigil—a symbol of absolute power. The guards at the entrance weren't ordinary werewolves. They wore silver uniforms and carried themselves like elite soldiers, each one looking capable of tearing an upstart alpha in half."Drake Whitaker," the lead guard, Cole Mercer, said coldly, "you have no right to set foot in Alpha King's territory.""I need to see Aria!" Drake said as he got out of the car, his voice almost a plea. "Just once! Let me see her one time!"Cole scoffed. "Who do you think you are? You really think you have the right to see Luna?""She promised me!" Drake shouted, losing control. "She said she'd wait for me! She said it!"A silver Rolls-Royce glided out through the gates. The window slid down, and I sat in the back with a pup tucked into a silver blanket against my chest. The mark on my neck was as clear as day—a permanent mark that on

"Back... Back to where?" Drake stammered. Then, a horrible thought seemed to hit him. He grabbed Dad's arm. "You didn't sell Aria to some old alpha as a plaything, did you?" he asked, voice trembling."Those old werewolves are sick! With her temper, Aria wouldn't last three days in a place like that! They'd tear her apart! I'm serious!"He asked desperately, "What pack is it? The washed-up Redstone pack? The new Scarletmoon pack? Rogues on the border? I know every one of them. I'll pay whatever it takes. I'll bring Aria back right now!"Dad shook him off with a cold laugh. "Northreach. Go if you dare, but you might not make it back."Drake actually smiled like he had this handled. "Don't worry. I've got ways. I'm just bringing her back. Those little packs love silver. Pay enough and they'll hand her over."Dad's patience snapped.Idiot! He was digging his own grave! He slammed the door in Drake's face.Drake jumped in his car and tore off for the Northreach Dominion. On the w

I almost laughed. So, his plan was to demote me from mistress to a maid?Isabella followed Drake and tossed me a triumphant smile over her shoulder. "Aria, you really broke Drake's heart this time. Life won't be easy for you on our turf.""Who cares," I said coldly.Drake turned to the steward at the temple like he hadn't heard a word. "Put in a request for that Bloodmoon stone and ship it to the Ridgefield pack territory. Ms. Bennett likes red."Then, he vanished down the stairwell.Isabella's smile froze and she hurried after him. That night, a messenger showed up with a wooden box. He wore formal robes but couldn't hide the contempt in his eyes."Alpha Drake asked me to deliver this," he said. "This is an abortifacient prepared by a witch. Effective within 72 hours."Alpha Drake also says that since you're no longer... pure, your benefits will be adjusted. From now on, when you enter the Eastgate pack territory, you'll use the maids' entrance. You'll stay in the storage room
