Chapter 3

Author: Crashing Waves
I had just returned to the villa in my wine-soaked clothes when the lock turned.

Mattia was home.

He walked straight up to me and pressed a cold hotel keycard into my palm."Catalina, stay at a hotel tonight."

He paused. "Ginevra is moving in tomorrow. I don't want her to see anything of yours. It'll upset her."

Then he added, "I know this is hard on you. I'll make it up to you later, I promise."

Later? Our future had just been sold off at that auction for 15 million dollars with a price tag attached. I walked past him to the nightstand and calmly picked up the framed photo of us.

Mattia must have thought I was feeling sentimental, because his expression softened. "Don't be difficult, Catalina. Now's not the time."

"There won't be a later." Right in front of him, I threw the frame into the trash bin.

Mattia froze. Fury flashed across his face. "Catalina! What the hell is wrong with you?"

I ignored him and opened the closet, tossing my meager belongings into a suitcase. It had been five years. Everything I owned fit into a 20-inch bag.

He'd probably never seen me like this before, cold and unyielding. For once, he had nothing to say. I pulled my suitcase past him and walked out.

The taxi drove through the empty late-night streets. I'd just given the driver the hotel address when a deafening roar erupted from behind us.

Several motorcycles forced our car off the road. A group of thugs swarmed around us, leering at me.

The leader, a guy with bleached hair, banged on the window and whistled at me. His words were crude and arrogant.

"Hey there, pretty thing. Don't be scared. Ms. Bellini wants us to take really good care of you and snap some nice pictures for Mr. Vitale. Let him enjoy the show too."

The driver's face went white, his hands trembling on the wheel. I stared at those disgusting faces through the window, ice forming in my chest.

Ginevra really couldn't wait. I pulled out my phone and called Mattia.

"Mattia, help me. Some men stopped my car. I'm scared."

My voice shook, but my eyes stayed flat as I looked out the window.

On the other end, Mattia's tone was impatient. "Catalina, are you that addicted to playing victim? Stop pulling these pathetic stunts for attention. I'm sick of it."

It was a life-or-death situation, and all he could think was that I was begging for attention. He'd crushed this last chance himself.

Before I could say anything else, a cloying female voice slipped through the line, breathless and suggestive.

"Matt, stop worrying about that bitch. Focus on me."

It was Ginevra.

Mattia hung up. I stared at the screen, at that final call record, and slowly wiped the tears from my eyes.

Outside, the men were still shouting. When I didn't react, they started pounding harder on the window.

I took a deep breath.

The game was over. I pushed the door open and stepped out.

The thug grinned when he saw me emerge. "That's more like it. Cooperate early, and we'll be real gentle with…"

His expression froze mid-sentence. Four black sports cars emerged from the darkness and surrounded us silently. Headlights blazed to life, blinding the thugs.

Car doors opened in unison. A dozen men in black suits stepped out and slammed the thugs to the ground in seconds.

The leader, so arrogant moments ago, now had his face pressed against the asphalt, letting out muffled groans of pain. I walked over and looked down at him.

"Which hand did you use to bang on my window?"

He trembled. The smell of urine hit the air.

I stepped back in disgust. Turning to the leading man, I said, "Return this gift from Ms. Bellini. With interest."

"Yes, Principessa."

I slid into the back seat of one of the sports cars. Behind me, screams tore through the night.

Mattia stood in the hallway outside my office for the entire afternoon. By evening, I'd finished my last meeting. When I saw him waiting by the door, I wasn't surprised. He looked at me with pain, regret, and a flicker of pathetic hope in his eyes. Before I could speak, his knees buckled, and he dropped to the floor in front of me."I'm sorry, Catalina. I was wrong! I'm a bastard! I'm scum! I shouldn't have…"He babbled incoherently, tears streaming down his face. I stepped back."Mr. Vitale, this is a place of business, not a stage for your theatrics. Control yourself."He looked up at me, his eyes filled with desperation and pleading. I stared down at him."I never helped you because you were exceptional, and certainly not because I loved you. In the Ricci family's portfolio, you and your empire were just an investment project I used for practice."Now, the evaluation period is over. As an asset, you have no value to me anymore.""Investment… project?"The color drained fr

At noon, Mattia was assigned to clean the administrative floor's restrooms and break rooms. As he pushed the cleaning cart past my office, a voice drifted out from inside. It was Enzo."Principessa, all the startup capital for the Vitale 'Sirius' project three years ago came from you through an anonymous offshore shell company."Mattia's hand froze on the cart handle."Furthermore, when the project hit massive resistance from the local unions in North Melcina and was on the verge of collapse, you used the Ricci family's connections to quietly resolve every obstacle behind the scenes."The sound of papers rustling carried clearly through the door. "Without you, there would have been no Vitale business empire."I picked up my coffee and sipped on it. My tone was flat as I said, "It's in the past."The cleaning cart slammed into the wall. Mattia stood frozen, his face ashen. The Sirius project. That had been the real turning point in his career, the achievement he was most proud o

The next morning, Mattia stood in the corner of the main floor wearing a server's vest. The casino manager, who used to bow and scrape before him, jabbed a finger at his face and barked without mercy."You think you're still the Vitale heir? In here, you're the lowest rank on the floor!"The manager tossed a rag at Mattia's feet and pointed to a puddle of vomit a gambler had just left on the ground."Before you're allowed to deal cards, you'll scrub every inch of this casino floor clean. That's how we do things here. Don't like it? Get lost!"Mattia ground his teeth and slowly crouched down to wipe the nauseating mess.At 10:00 am, I walked in to a chorus of "Good morning, Principessa". Just as I headed for the stairs, the manager called out to Mattia, who was still scrubbing the floor."You there! Take this fruit plate up to the VVIP suite on the second floor. The Principessa is entertaining an important guest!"Mattia's body went rigid. He picked up the tray and climbed the

The moment I finished speaking, the ballroom doors swung open again. Two rows of bodyguards in black suits filed in and formed lines on either side of the entrance. My Papa, Don of the Ricci family, walked through.Behind him followed a haggard-looking man, Giuseppe. When Mattia saw his Papa, desperation flooded his face. He struggled desperately on the floor."Papa! Papa! Help me! This crazy woman brought her people to wreck my engagement party!"She forged acquisition contracts and claimed we're bankrupt! Papa, have someone arrest her!"Under the scrutiny of every guest, Giuseppe walked onstage on trembling legs. In front of Mattia's hopeful gaze, he delivered a resounding slap across his son's face."You bastard! Shut your mouth!"Mattia clutched his cheek and stared at his Papa in disbelief. Giuseppe didn't spare his son another glance. Instead, he turned to me and lowered his head."From this day forward, I, Giuseppe Vitale, willingly surrender all assets under the Vital

Silence blanketed the ballroom after I spoke. After a brief moment of shock, Mattia let out a cold laugh. "Catalina, you've really lost it."His voice dripped with mockery. "You'd make up something this ridiculous just to get back at me? The Ricci Principessa? Why not claim you're the president's daughter while you're at it?"Ginevra clutched her swollen face and scrambled to her feet, her voice shrill. "Matt! She's gone insane! She hired a bunch of actors to scare us!"The Ricci family is based in Epoly. Why would they suddenly show up in North Melcina?"Mattia found his footing again, and the contempt and arrogance returned to his eyes in an instant. He pointed at the bodyguards behind me and screamed, "Are you all deaf? Throw these actors out! And tie up this psycho! Send her to a mental institution!"The security guards kept their heads down. None of them moved. How pathetic of Mattia. I snapped my fingers. Behind me, my personal lawyer handed me a thick stack of docume

Two days later, Mattia and Ginevra's engagement party took place at the most luxurious hotel the Bellini family owned. Nearly every power player in North Melcina had shown up.Mattia stood onstage, basking in the crowd's praise. Backstage in the lounge, he had his arms around Ginevra in her white gown."Ginnie, after tonight, with your family's money and that mystery buyer's capital, the Vitale empire is mine. The old bastards won't be able to tell me what to do anymore."Ginevra leaned against him shyly. "Matt, I knew you were the best."He smiled, but my face had flashed unexpectedly through his mind. I'd vanished without a trace after that night, and he felt strangely hollow, like something was missing. How ridiculous. He thought that woman who'd clung to him, who couldn't survive without him, was hiding in some dark corner and crying her eyes out right now.Mattia shook off the absurd thought and refocused on the beauty in his arms. The party reached its peak as the host deli
