Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
My sharp retort left Roslyn at a loss for words, her expression turning livid.

"You're still breathing, aren't you? An injury like that will heal in a few days. Why do you have to be so vicious and ruin your own brother's life?" she snapped.

As I watched my parents gang up on me, I almost laughed.

Their own flesh and blood was lying in a hospital bed with his head still bleeding, yet all they cared about was their adopted son's reputation and the family's image.

Whatever hope I'd had left for our so-called family bond died right then and there.

I'd never been the type to take a hit lying down. I believed in an eye for an eye.

If they were determined to protect Matthew, then I'd deal with him myself.

I lowered my gaze, hiding the coldness in my eyes, and forced a weak, obedient smile.

"Mom, Dad, I'm sorry. I must've been so out of it after hitting my head that I had no idea what was going on."

Then I turned to the doctor and deliberately softened my voice. "Doctor, forget about it. I lost my footing and fell. There's no need to call the police. Thank you."

The doctor frowned as if he wanted to say something more, but when he saw that my parents weren't going to budge, he just sighed, put away his phone, and turned to write me a prescription.

Roslyn and Benson both breathed a sigh of relief, a hint of satisfaction finally showing on their faces.

Benson stepped forward to pat me on the shoulder, but I leaned away before he could touch me.

Unfazed, he said flatly, "I'm glad you've come to your senses. We're family. We shouldn't hold grudges against each other. Stay here and get some rest. I'll have Harris make you some soup and bring it over later."

"Stay here and rest?"

I let out a quiet laugh, yanked the IV needle out of the back of my hand, threw off the blanket, and got out of bed.

"Aaron!" Benson exclaimed. "The doctor said you have a mild concussion. You need to stay in the hospital!"

"I'm not staying."

I pulled on my bloodstained school blazer and looked at them. "School is more important."

Half an hour later, with blood seeping through the bandage on my forehead, I quietly pushed open the classroom door.

Matthew sat surrounded by a group of classmates. He wore a tailored school uniform and an expensive limited-edition watch. His eyes were slightly red, and he looked like he'd been the one who was wronged.

"Guys, don't say that about Aaron…"

Matthew's soft voice carried clearly across the quiet classroom. "Mr. Carter took Aaron away all those years ago, and he grew up in the middle of nowhere without much of an education. He only hit me yesterday because he was upset. I understand why he did it.

"Please don't shut him out. We just need to be more understanding."

The classmates around him immediately erupted in outrage.

"Matthew, you're way too nice! He's basically a servant's son who got lucky enough to be taken in by your family, and he actually had the nerve to lay a hand on you?"

"Exactly! Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. The second he shows up, we're making him apologize to you in front of everyone!"

A subtle, smug smile tugged at the corner of Matthew's lips.

As I watched him hide behind that flawless mask, I slowly unclenched my fists.

I'd changed my mind. Shoving him down the stairs would be way too easy on him.

Violence could only cause physical pain. Stripping away his facade and shattering the dignity he took such pride in would be the most devastating revenge.

Ignoring the hostile looks thrown my way from inside the classroom, I turned around and walked to the far end of the hallway.

I pulled out my phone and dialed 911.

"Hello, my name is Aaron Gould. I'd like to report Matthew Gould for attempted murder."

I hung up and headed straight for the dean of students' office.

Yvonne Winslow, the dean, was notoriously strict and followed every rule to the letter.

I copied the encrypted file onto a tablet, along with a confession video the private investigator had found, in which Gavin admitted to switching the babies. Then I headed downstairs.Down in the living room, Matthew was still throwing a tantrum in his wheelchair."So what if everyone online is trash-talking me? I'm still the son you raised for 18 years! What right do you have to freeze my cards? Kick Aaron out! I don't want to see him!"Benson rubbed his temples in frustration. Roslyn's face was livid with rage, and whatever patience she'd once had for her obedient adopted son was gone.I walked over and slammed the tablet down on the coffee table. On the screen, Gavin sat in a cramped rented room, gloating about how he'd switched the babies 18 years ago."Take a good look before you continue screaming," I said, casting Matthew a cold glance.Roslyn frowned and picked up the tablet. Less than 30 seconds in, the look on her face changed. She shot to her feet, her hands shaking v

"You bastard! You've completely humiliated the Gould family!" Roslyn snapped, clutching her chest as her whole body trembled with rage. "Everyone in our circle is laughing at me now! Mr. Lynch even stopped the Westbrook project!"Benson scrambled up from the floor and instinctively reached out to shield Matthew, but when he saw his hideously twisted face, his hands froze midair."Mom, Dad… you hit me? You actually hit me for that bastard Aaron!" Matthew completely lost it, grabbing an antique vase off the coffee table and hurling it straight at the TV."I'm the son you raised for 18 years! Who the hell is he?!" he shouted. The sharp sound of shattering glass cut through the room.Roslyn and Benson stared at the wreckage and at Matthew raging like a street thug. The final piece of evidence was actual footage from the dean of students' office that day, showing Matthew lunging at me before Sierra pinned him to the desk.I clicked send and pinned the post to the top.I leaned back in my chair, staring silently at the screen.Within three minutes, the quiet class group chat exploded."Holy shit! What a twist! So who's the real snake here?""My eyes must be playing tricks on me. Is that really the polite, gentle Matthew we know? Forcing someone to kneel and admitting he pushed Aaron? That's attempted murder!""Yesterday, he was playing the victim in the chat, claiming Aaron pushed him down the stairs. Turns out he was accusing Aaron of the exact thing he did himself. Aaron was just defending himself!""Hearing him say 'Mom and Dad still side with me' in that recording makes my blood boil. What kind of rich family is this? As soon as Matthew was wheeled into the living room, he grabbed a porcelain cup off the coffee table and smashed it right at my feet.Porcelain shards scattered across the floor, a few grazing my shins."Aaron Gould! Look at what you did to me! I'll never let you get away with this!" Matthew shrieked, his face contorted with rage. Not a trace of his usual refined, gentlemanly demeanor remained.Benson held Matthew's shoulders in distress, then turned to glare at me."Why are you just standing there? Look at what you did to Matthew! Get over here, get on your knees, and apologize right now!"Roslyn, exhausted and annoyed, pointed a finger right in my face and roared, "Look at what you've done! You've thrown this house into chaos! If I'd known you were this malicious, I never would have brought you back!"With Roslyn and Benson completely taking his side, Matthew only grew bolder. "Mom, Dad! As long as he's in this house, I won't be able to sleep a wink! I want him out of the mas

Matthew's arms and legs were soon covered in swollen red scrapes. Clutching his lower back, he couldn't even manage a full sentence through the pain. "It hurts… My back…"Roslyn and Benson snapped back to reality and scrambled down the stairs."Matthew! My sweet boy, don't scare me like this!"Benson rushed over, desperate to hold him but terrified to touch him, tears streaming down his face.Roslyn's eyes were bloodshot as she whipped around to glare daggers at me. "Aaron Gould, you bastard! He's your brother! How could you do this to him? Are you trying to kill him?"As she hurled those deafening accusations at me, I stood at the top of the stairs and coldly watched the touching family scene unfold below.I walked down the steps with deliberate slowness, pointing to the blood still seeping through the bandage on my forehead."Kill him? Mom, when he pushed me down these exact stairs this morning, why didn't you ask him if he was trying to kill me?"I stopped three feet away fr
