Chapter 2

Penulis: The Handsome Guy
Renee said, "Alright, alright. Stop being mad at me. I promise that we'll finally go public on our third wedding anniversary."

I paused for a few seconds, hesitating only briefly before prying her fingers off me.

I met her confused gaze and said, "There's no need to go public anymore. Let's just get a divorce."

Renee looked like she'd just heard a joke. "You're kidding."

I shook my head.

She pressed her lips together as her eyes grew cold. "All because of Aspen's slippers?"

My lips moved. I wanted to tell her that it was not the case, but I suddenly realized that if she still never noticed anything after my three years of endurance and over a thousand days of suffering, she was probably just turning a blind eye to them on purpose. So, would it really matter if I corrected her now?

I lowered my eyes and ignored her for the first time, turning to walk into the bedroom.

She yanked me back. "Wait a minute!"

She then pointed at the living room matter-of-factly and said, "Aren't you going to clean this up first?"

I stared at the hand she used to point at the living room, noticing the thin, slender fingers that were no longer wearing our wedding ring. There wasn't even a trace of the ring's mark on her finger to prove that she wore it at all.

She'd taken the ring off the day after we got married. Back then, I had asked her aggrievedly why she'd done that, and she'd leaned into my ear and comforted me, though in an amused manner.

"I know that you're upset, but I still have class in the afternoon, and I can't let anyone know about this. I'll just put the ring back on when I get home later, alright?"

She'd put it so nicely, but she never put the ring back on her finger again after that.

At times, I would make a fuss about it, and she'd just give me a look like I was a child throwing a tantrum.

"Jerry, I just got promoted to Associate Professor at work, and the university's leadership thinks very highly of me now. I can't afford to get embroiled in any scandals. We should be cautious about this."

I had been really naive then, believing every single word she said. I never once thought that the ring would be just like me and our marriage in her eyes—nothing more than just a trivial and dispensable detail.

It didn't compare to Aspen getting a stomachache. It didn't compare to him missing home and losing his appetite. It also didn't compare to him missing out on a year-end bonus and needing Renee's personal comfort.

I thought about the past before looking back at the mess in the living room. A chill crept up from the soles of my feet.

The tablecloth was stained with large patches of brown grease. The braised ribs in the ceramic dish had long since congealed into a black, waxy-looking thing that looked like it was shattered under the cold fluorescent light—just like my marriage to Renee.

It looked polished and shiny on the surface, but in reality, it was riddled with holes everywhere.

Renee didn't know that I'd spent two hours grocery shopping, three hours in the kitchen, and several more waiting in the cold fall wind outside her apartment. She never bothered to ask me if I was cold, tired, or hungry.

All she did was tell me to clean up after her guests' mess, as though I was just an hourly maid she'd hired who could be summoned and dismissed at will.

A desolate smile spread across my lips, reflected in the cold, half-eaten leftovers on the table, making the scene look even more wretched.

Renee didn't say a single word. She reached out to touch my forehead and asked, "What is wrong with you? Why are you acting so out of it today?"

I brushed her hand off and rejected her for the first time.

"I'm tired. I'm going to sleep. Whoever made the mess can clean it up. If you don't want to, then hire a cleaner."

With that, I turned and went straight into the bedroom.

"Jerry, what on earth is the matter with you? What's with this sudden attitude?"

Renee's familiar accusations rang in my ears, but I didn't panic or scramble for an explanation as I used to anymore. I just continued walking into the en suite bathroom and let the warm water drench every pore on my skin.

Finally, I felt alive again.

Renee was right. It was hard for an orphan with no familial background to further his studies in a new city without any connections.

So, when I was locked up by bullies in the restroom and later got rescued by her, I immediately began developing feelings for her. At that time, she was just a new TA at the university.

She was young and pretty, always smiling, and she'd blush whenever she was around me. She helped me out time and time again, and as one thing led to another, we began dating in secret.

We registered our marriage the moment I graduated from university. Back then, we would sit together on the mountaintop, watching the sunset, and she would insist on draping her jacket over me even as she shivered in the cold.

"Let's live together, Jerry. This way, I'll be able to see you and the little orange light you leave on for me whenever I come home."

The sound of rushing water filled my ears. My gaze then swept over the overlapping handprints on the mirror, and I snapped back to reality at once.

I picked up my phone. As I stared at my reflection in the mirror, I said in an extremely calm voice, "Kindly draft up a divorce agreement for me."

I typed out a reply to Renee."Fine. Let's meet at the cafe in the neighborhood."The weather in Janderville was just the same as ever. There was no Landonia fog and no damp chill seeping into the bones—only the warm, pleasant sunshine on my skin.Unfortunately, the beautiful scene was ruined the moment Renee pushed the door open and walked into the cafe. She stood frozen at the entrance for a few seconds. Then, she slowly shuffled toward my table, sat down opposite me, and swallowed hard."You've changed a lot, Jerry."I glanced at her coldly, my expression unruffled. She didn't dare to hesitate and continued speaking."Why haven't you been replying to my messages? I've been looking for you for ages. Nobody knew where you went."I replied perfunctorily, "If you were looking for me to hand over the signed divorce papers, you can do it now."Renee's eyes reddened the moment she heard me bring the divorce papers up. She stared straight at me and hoarsely asked, "Why…"I replie

That night, Aspen's livestream and replays racked up more than 100 million views online. After all, the two main characters at the center of this scandal were involved in a taboo relationship and had rather unusual profiles. It was bound to cause a massive uproar across the internet.Renee was furious. Yet, she was utterly helpless. She considered several times starting a livestream of her own to explain things, but she ultimately abandoned the idea. She simply couldn't bear the thought of being reviled by thousands of people on camera.More than that, she was terrified that I might see her in such a wretched, disheveled state. The university decisively stripped her of her position, citing the impact of her private life on the university's reputation as too great and declaring that the scandal was too damaging to ever rehire her.Renee lost everything overnight, now reviled and mocked by everyone she saw. There was nothing else she could do but hole herself up at home and drown

Aspen then tried to lunge forward and throw his arms around Renee, his eyes bloodshot. But Renee felt a wave of nausea wash over her, and her pent-up rage finally exploded. She kicked Aspen out of the way and slammed the door shut with a loud bang. After driving Aspen away, Renee went back inside her apartment and grabbed a rag and a broom to toss out all of his belongings. Every time she thought about his past, she would feel nauseous as though she'd just swallowed a thousand flies. Her face was white and pale, and she couldn't stop shuddering as she got rid of all of Aspen's things. After she was finally done, she collapsed back onto the couch and kicked the coffee table in a fury. Her phone buzzed again. But this time, it wasn't Brady. It was one of her closer colleagues at work, Penny Falcon."Dr. Hickman! Terrible news! Take out your phone and go on TikTok Live right now! That student of yours, Aspen Frost, is telling the whole world that you're one of his sugar mommies!"Th

Brady yelled, "Just what kind of person did you recommend as our staff, Renee? What exactly is your relationship with Aspen Frost? Do you even know this student of yours?"Are you even aware of his past? How dare you recommend him for a teaching position in the university without knowing a thing about him? His dark past has been dug up and exposed now, and netizens across the country are laughing at us, calling us nuts for hiring a gigolo as a TA!"Thanks to you, the university's century-old reputation has been completely ruined in an instant!"Renee was berated mercilessly over the phone, unable to get a single word in as Brady continued his tirade. When she thought she could finally speak, Brady had already hung up.She hurriedly went online and searched for Aspen's name. After scanning through the posts and articles that came up, she swayed on her feet and nearly collapsed.Brady hadn't been joking. Aspen really used to be a kept man for wealthy sugar mommies in the past, and n

Renee clutched her phone, unable to sleep all night. She'd assumed that I would at least call back once after she'd called me so many times, but there was nothing from me at all. I never responded to a single one. I never came home after that night either. She frantically ransacked the house and realized that my documents and bank cards were missing. I'd only left my old suitcase behind, the one inside the wardrobe. However, there had been very few of my clothing items in there to begin with, so it didn't really matter whether I brought them with me.An overwhelming sense of panic pressed in on her nerves as though she'd just been plunged into the deep sea. Her gaze landed on the grease-stained divorce agreement that had been ripped to shreds in a fit of fury, and her pupils darkened. It wasn't until now that she finally realized I hadn't been threatening her with a divorce with that agreement. I had really wanted to divorce her after all.She hurriedly called up the company wher

My gaze swept over Renee, who was wearing an apron and holding a spatula. In all the time we'd been married, she'd never once stepped foot in the kitchen. She used to tell me that her rhinitis made her unable to tolerate the fumes in the kitchen. She also told me that she was a university lecturer, and her hands were only meant for holding a pen.Yet now, for the sake of her beloved student, she was holding a spatula in one hand and a greasy rag in the other. So much for her rhinitis and "lecturer airs". They seemed to have all magically cured. And yet, even now, she still believed that I was the one who'd done something wrong.I didn't have the energy to argue with her anymore. I just shook my head and turned to leave. She grabbed my arm at once, looking at me earnestly. "I told Aspen about our relationship. He knows that you're my husband."I stopped for a moment and looked at her without a stir of emotion."And?"Renee furrowed her brows, seemingly struggling to find the wor
