Chapter 1 – Betrayed in her own bed

I got home after a long day and my parents were waiting for me in the living room.

- Catarina, sit down because we need to talk. – My father said and seemed very nervous.

- Can you tell me, Dad, what happened? – I asked my father tiredly, I had worked all day, gone to college at night and, when I got home, the only thing I wanted was to take a shower and fall into bed. But that wasn't possible.

- Catarina, your cousin's wedding invitation arrived. – My mother said.

- That little woman is not my cousin! – I said, already getting nervous.

- Catarina, she is your cousin. – My mother said. – You better stop with this childish attack. Melissa already hit her and made a scene here at home. Now that's enough! She's my sister's daughter, so she's your cousin.

- I'm sorry, Mom, but she's nothing to me. – I tried to stay calm. – She slept with my boyfriend in my bed, that’s not something you do.

I had been dating Cláudio for four years, he was my first boyfriend, and I found him in my bed, in my room, having sex with Kelly, my cousin! I was shocked. Of course Melissa, my best friend, went after them. Since then, things have been tense in my house, because my parents insisted that it was nonsense and that I should act as if nothing had happened and go back to living with my cousin.

- He was wrong, Catarina, he was your boyfriend. – My mother argued. – Poor Kelly, she was seduced, he dishonored her, now he’s going to marry her so she won’t be talked about badly in town.

- Oh, mom! Spare me and spare yourself! The whole town knows that Kelly is a slut... – I lost my patience.

- Catarina, watch your vocabulary! – My father called my attention. – Look, if you don't want to be around Kelly, that's fine, but you're going to this wedding. And enough of this rude behavior.

- What do I mean? – I thought I had heard wrong.

- You're going to your cousin Catarina's wedding. That's an order! We're your parents and you're going to obey. – My mother spoke angrily to me, as if I were the one in the wrong in this situation.

- I'm sorry, mom, but I'm not going! I follow your rules, I'm a good daughter, but this time it won't work. I was the one who was offended! I have every right not to want to be the family's joke anymore. – I said, already crying.

- ENOUGH, CATARINA! – My father shouted and scared me. – You're going to this wedding and that's the end of it.

- But, dad...

- I don't care, Catarina! It's important for your mother to keep peace in the family. So you're going and that's it. – My father said, not leaving room for questions.

I went to my room and spent the night crying. The next day I told Melissa everything, and she wasted no time in getting the invitations for a masquerade ball, a gala event, telling my parents that it would be extremely important for my career, since the most important businessmen in the city would be there, I would make very important contacts and our teachers had promised to introduce us to several businessmen who would open doors for our professional future.

At first my parents weren't very convinced, but Melissa's parents talked to them and convinced them that it would be an excellent opportunity for my future. So they agreed that I should take advantage of the opportunity.

- Catarina, you can't say no to me! I've already bought the invitations, the masks and I've even convinced your parents that it's an extremely important event for your professional future, which gave me a lot of work. This party is going to be incredible and you won't miss it! - Melissa said and looked at me with the eyes of an abandoned puppy, clasping her hands together as if pleading.

I was sitting at my desk at work, in the middle of the afternoon on a Thursday, between taking messages and making calls, and Mel showed up with coffee, chocolate cakes and this insistence that I accept to go to the masked ball that took place annually and was the biggest event in our city.

- Oh, Mel, how can I not say no to you? Okay, I'll go!

I agreed to go to the ball, but I still wasn't sure. Anyway, I was going to sleep at Mel's house to avoid the wedding, but I wouldn't go to the party. However, Melissa did everything she could to convince me to go to the party. On Saturday we got ready at her house.

- What's up, huh, my friend! You look so hot! - She handed me a beautiful golden mask, all worked like lace, that covered up to my nose and I put it on. I was wearing a bright red satin dress and the mask matched perfectly. - So, are we ready?

- Yes, we are ready. - I answered and grabbed my bag. – Oh, I forgot my perfume.

- No, it's okay, you'll use my mom's new perfume. She doesn't mind.

- When Fernando, Mel's boyfriend, saw us, he smiled, gave Mel a kiss and said:

- Girls, you look gorgeous! I think you'll leave this party with a new boyfriend, Cat.

- No boyfriend, Nando. Actually, I think I'd better stay, I'm not in the mood to party. Please, Mel, let me stay?
