Before she stepped into our kitchen like she still belonged, she had been gone for five years, and I wish it had stayed that way.

Evelyn Houston (Granny). The ever sophisticated Evelyn Houston. The one who makes an elegant appearance and now, here she was, standing in my home, in front of my daughter, like she hadn’t vanished without a word half a decade ago.

I felt Drake go still beside me. His jaw clenched, hands flexing slightly. “Grandma?”

She smiled faintly, tilting her head. “Hello, darling.”

“When did you get back from the States? Why didn’t you tell me?” Drake asked.

Evelyn gave a soft, practiced sigh. “I wanted to settle in first. Didn’t want to make a fuss.”

Bull. She lived for fuss. For grand entrances. This wasn’t a visit,it was a performance and I'm sure she's here to terrorise me.

Eva pressed close to Drake’s leg, clutching his pajama pants. I scooped her up,holding her tight. She didn’t know this woman, and I wasn’t about to let her be dragged into whatever storm Evelyn

  • ISABELLA (The Night that ruined me)   EARNING HER TRUST

ISABELLA POVThe smell of cinnamon and coffee drifted into the room like a memory I couldn’t place.I stirred beneath the covers, disoriented for a second before I remembered where I was. Xavier’s penthouse. The unfamiliar ceiling, the too-soft mattress, the silence that felt like it was waiting to be broken.I sat up slowly. The robe clung to my skin, still carrying the scent of last night’s tears. My eyes were swollen, gritty. But the house was awake. I could hear Eva’s giggles echoing from the kitchen, followed by the low hum of Xavier’s voice. For a moment, I just sat there, listening. Her laughter..pure, bright…wrapped around my bruised chest like a balm. There was no pain in it, no confusion. Just joy.I padded out barefoot, the marble floor cool beneath me. As I reached the kitchen doorway, I paused.Xavier was standing at the stove, sleeves rolled up, flipping pancakes with theatrical flair. Eva sat on the counter beside him, legs swinging, a flour smudge on her cheek and her

  • ISABELLA (The Night that ruined me)   I MISS DADDY

ISABELLA POV The room smelled like lavender and quiet lies.I sat on the edge of the bed, motionless, hands clasped around the mug of untouched tea Xavier had brought earlier. It had long gone cold, much like the warmth in my chest. The soft bedding, the plush fox on Eva’s pillow, the pale morning light creeping through the sheer curtains..none of it made this place feel like home.Because it wasn’t.And I was no longer sure where home even was.My phone buzzed again beside me, the sound cutting through the silence like a blade. I glanced at the screen.Drake.Again.Dozens of messages blinked across my screen..each one a piece of a man unraveling.**"Isabella, please."*****"I'm sorry. I never meant for it to happen this way."****"I love you. I love Eva. Please don't let this be the end."****"I'm not asking for forgiveness. Just… don’t shut me out."**I turned the phone face-down, but the vibrations continued like a heartbeat I couldn’t quiet. Each buzz was a jolt..guilt, anger, s

  • ISABELLA (The Night that ruined me)   THE TRUTH HURTS

DRAKE POVThe house was too quiet.Too damn quiet.I slammed the front door behind me, the sound echoing through the empty hall like a gunshot. Her scent still lingered in the air faint vanilla. Mocking me. Haunting me.I staggered to the living room, the image of Isabella’s face twisted in betrayal, in pain burned into my brain like acid. Her sobs still rang in my ears. Her voice cracked with horror when she said the word “monster.” And she was right.I had become the very thing I swore I'd never be.My knees gave out, and I collapsed onto the couch, burying my face in my hands. For a second, all I could do was breathe. Just breathe. Like maybe if I did it enough times, it would hurt less. But it didn’t.My eyes caught the glass on the side table half-full from the night before, still stained with lipstick. Hers. A fragment of our old life. Of the lie I’d let fester.I grabbed it and threw it against the wall.It exploded.Shards flew like splinters of memory, catching the light, ref

  • ISABELLA (The Night that ruined me)   YOU ARE A MONSTER

ISABELLA POVThe night was still, suffocating in its silence.Camille had gone to bed hours ago. I sat curled on the couch, arms wrapped around my knees, eyes on the darkened TV screen that reflected only fragments of myself. I felt hollow. Stretched thin by too many possibilities, too many half-truths.Then I heard it.A whimper. A broken cry.“Daddy… no…”I was on my feet in seconds, rushing down the hall to the guest room where Eva slept. I pushed the door open to find her tossing, her small fists gripping the sheets.“No… don’t take him…” she whimpered. “Don’t take Daddy away…”I hurried to her side, sitting on the edge of the bed and brushing the damp curls off her forehead. Her cheeks were flushed, eyes pinched shut.“Shhh, baby. I’m here. Mommy’s here.”She thrashed again, whispering through sobs, “I want Daddy… I want him now…”Her pain cracked something open in me. I held her tightly, swaying gently, whispering soft words against her ear until her breathing evened out again.

  • ISABELLA (The Night that ruined me)   WHAT HAPPENED THAT NIGHT

ISABELLA POVThe sun filtered through the linen curtains like it didn’t know my world was unraveling.Eva sat at the breakfast table, swinging her little legs and chewing on toast Camille had lovingly slathered with strawberry jam. Her curls were still messy from sleep, her eyes puffy but bright. She giggled when Camille poured her milk and made a silly face with the foam.I stood by the sink, watching. Trying to look normal. Trying to feel human. But inside, I was a trembling wire pulled too tight. My chest was burning.Camille glanced at me. “Eat something, Isa.”I nodded and forced myself to sit, but the moment I looked down at the food, nausea rolled in my stomach like a tide. I pushed the plate away.Eva turned to me. “Mommy… when are we going home?”Her question sliced right through me.“Soon, baby,” I said softly, brushing her hair back. “We’re just… taking a little break.”“Did Daddy do something bad?”The jam on her cheek. The innocence in her eyes.I blinked back tears. “No,

  • ISABELLA (The Night that ruined me)   FINDINGS

ISABELLA POVThe silence in Camille’s guest room was too loud.Eva lay curled beside me on the bed, fast asleep, one small hand clutching the edge of my shirt like she was afraid I’d vanish if she let go. Her breath was steady, soft. Innocent.Unlike mine.I stared at the ceiling, eyes wide open, heart numb. The sounds of the city beyond the window drifted in horns, birdsong but none of it seemed real. Nothing did.Not since Xavier. Not since his words tore through me like glass.I shifted, careful not to wake Eva, and stared down at her. Her long lashes rested on her cheeks, her soft lips slightly parted. My little girl. My whole world. And maybe…Maybe his daughter.A tremor passed through me, cold crawling to my chest.I pressed a kiss to Eva’s forehead and slowly slid off the bed. My feet hit the floorboards with a quiet creak. I padded across the room, shutting the door behind me before walking into the small living room where Camille sat curled on the couch, nursing a mug of tea
