POV: Silver Preston

The heavy doors open into cold air.

The corridor outside Woolsey Hall is the particular quiet that exists just outside loud rooms, where the sound becomes muffled and distant and your own heartbeat becomes audible again.

I push through and let the door close behind me.

The jazz trio's warmth disappears.

Stone corridor. Security lighting. The February draft moving through the old passage with the persistence of something that has been doing this since before anyone currently

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   What Comes After

POV: Eli HayesShe does not step back.I have been tracking that variable all semester, the specific moment in every charged interaction when the distance reasserts itself. When she recalibrates. When the composure comes back up and the real thing goes back behind it.She does not step back. She is looking at me with the expression that belongs to the actual person, not the performance, and her heels are on the cobblestones of the Branford courtyard and the amber lamp light is doing what it does and there is nothing between us except the six months of accumulation that got us to this specific spot at this specific hour.I reach up and touch her face. One hand. Careful. The knuckles of my fingers against her cheekbone in the amber light. She goes still. Not the managed still. The real kind. The kind that means the ground has shifted and the body has not yet decided what to do with the new information. Her breath comes out visible in the cold air between us.I move slowly. Not because I

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   The Courtyard

POV: Silver PrestonWe walk out of the building without deciding to.It happens the way things happen between us, without announcement, without either of us saying let's go outside. One moment we are standing in the corridor with the sentence still settling into the stone walls around us, and then the heavy door is open and the February air is on my face and we are outside. The Branford courtyard is empty. The security lamps throw their amber light across the cobblestones in the same pattern they have thrown it every night since September. Snow sits along the perimeter walls in the thin crusted layer that February produces, too old to be fresh and too cold to fully melt.My heels on the cobblestones make the sound they made the first time I walked through this gate. The first day.My bag was too heavy and my knee brace was rubbing against my jeans and I was performing casual with the focused effort of someone who has been performing for an audience since age eight.I caught my foot on

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   The Sentence

POV: Eli HayesI have been building toward this since September. The sentence has changed shape over the months. The version I almost said in the courtyard during the first gala was incomplete. The version I reached for at the top of the spiral staircase was there but wrong-timed. The version I had in the rink at two in the morning was interrupted by a fall on ice.None of those were the right version. This is the right version.I know it the same way I know when the right play is developing on the ice before it fully materializes. Not certainty about the outcome. Certainty about what needs to happen next.Silver is standing in the corridor outside Woolsey Hall. She is wearing midnight blue silk and her hair is up with the specific kind of deliberateness that means someone who cares about her put it that way. She shoved Weston Carroway with both hands in the middle of a gala floor and told him this is over in front of everyone close enough to hear it.She walked out here and found me.

Security lighting. The February draft moving through the old passage with the persistence of something that has been doing this since before anyone currently at Yale was born.I look both directions.Empty left.To the right, near the far window that overlooks the courtyard, a familiar silhouette. He is leaning against the stone wall.Jacket on. Arms crossed. Looking at the dark window with the focused quality of someone who is not actually looking at anything. He hears my footsteps. He does not turn immediately.Which means he knew someone was coming but was not sure it was me, which means he is as uncertain about this as I am, which is the most hum

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance    I Didn't Choose You

POV: Silver PrestonHis hand is too firm.Weston's grip at my waist has been tightening by degrees since the first bar of the jazz trio's new piece, each fractional increase measured and deliberate, the kind of escalation designed to happen slowly enough that each individual moment seems acceptable even as the total accumulates into something it absolutely is not.I am aware of it.I have been aware of it for the last four minutes.Eli left the hall twenty minutes ago.I watched it happen. He stepped away from my side to speak with Liam near the entrance, and then something pulled him out into the corridor, and then he was gone. Weston materialized at my elbow within approximately ninety seconds of Eli's departure with the timing of someone who had been tracking that variable specifically.I told myself I would stay for ten minutes.I have been here for fourteen."You look stunning tonight," Weston says, his mouth too close to my ear, his voice pitched for an intimacy I have not offer

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   Beside Her

POV: Eli HayesI watch it happen from across the room.Carroway crossing the floor toward Silver with the specific quality of movement that I have spent a semester identifying as calculated. The way he times his arrival. The way he positions himself in relation to her.I have been at this gala for forty minutes.I arrived early, which is not my usual approach to events like this, and I have been near the far column for most of that time, watching the room do what rooms do at formal events.Watching Silver specifically. Not the way I have been watching her all semester, with the careful management of someone keeping their own surveillance at a distance they can maintain control of.Just watching.Because she walked in tonight and something was different. The dress is different. The hair is different. But those things are surface and I have never been particularly interested in surfaces. What is different is the quality of how she is standing. No calculation in it.No managed distance b

POV: Silver PrestonUp close, Yale looms even larger than it did from the shuttle window. The Gothic spires press into the late afternoon sky, their shadows cutting long and dark across the courtyards below. I have competed in arenas built specifically to intimidate, designed with high ceilings and

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   The Long Way Back

POV: Silver PrestonThe question won't leave me.If I couldn't skate, who was I?It follows me through every MRI scan, every consultation with specialists who speak in careful, measured tones about torn ACLs and damaged meniscus tissue. It echoes through physical therapy sessions at the San Jose sp

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   Who Are You Without the Ice

POV: Silver PrestonShe looks like she just stepped out of a board meeting.Perfectly pressed navy blazer without a wrinkle. Blonde hair pulled back in the same severe chignon she wore at the arena. Makeup completely intact despite however many hours she spent in a waiting room down the hall.Leona

  • Ice & Ivy - A Hockey Romance   The Diagnosis

POV: Silver PrestonThe world comes back in pieces.First, the sound.A steady electronic pulse that echoes from somewhere far away, then closer, then inside my skull.Beep. Beep. Beep. Each tone feels like a small hammer tapping against my consciousness, dragging me back from whatever dark place m
