Chapter 4

Author: Seeky
A strong wind swept across the armory's street-level exit.

Marisa glanced at the empty street and gave me a friendly nod.

"Ms. Lombardi, need a ride back?"

"Thanks, but I'd rather go on my own."

I smiled.

I looked around. Just as I expected, the three of them hadn't left a single bodyguard behind for me.

In the past, I would've paced back and forth, calling them over and over, only to hear one dismissive excuse after another.

This time, I was perfectly calm.

I followed the hidden markers I'd left along the way, made it out of the district, and hailed an unlicensed cab back to the main house.

The moment I reached the compound, I went straight to the war room.

Carter looked surprised to see me back so soon and on my own.

I didn't explain. I slapped the top-level transfer order onto the table.

"I want my transfer to the Portopalo crew approved right now."

Carter frowned. "Has the Don approved sending a heavy-weapons unit with you?"

"He doesn't need to know."

My voice turned cold. "He doesn't get to rewrite the family's power structure, Carter. Victor is my father's adopted son. I'm a Lombardi by blood. Can't the council see that the Don is handing out the family's most important resources like toys just to compete for a woman's attention?"

Carter fell silent.

For some time, the council had been upset about how much Victor let Sofia get away with. The only reason no one had challenged him was that he was the Don.

"Even if you strip him of control over Portopalo," Carter said seriously, "you'll still be going into hostile territory alone. Someone could try to kill you every day. It's too dangerous."

"I've got an armed partner waiting for me there. Someone I trust completely."

The lie came easily.

Carter studied me for a long moment before finally signing the top-level transfer order.

That evening, I crouched beside the coffee table, packing my service pistol, spare magazines, and handover papers into a weapons case.

A sudden commotion came from outside.

The three of them were back from the armory.

Luca shouted orders at the bodyguards, "Careful! All three of those large cases are packed with Sofia's designer gowns. Load them into the helicopter with her makeup team!"

Within minutes, Sofia's luggage had taken up nearly all the space in the only heavily armored helicopter at the main house.

Victor walked in, adjusting his cufflinks.

He frowned when he saw me in the hall.

"Isabella, the helicopter's overloaded. Go down to the south port later and take the backup speedboat to meet us."

Behind him, Sofia exclaimed, "Oh no, this is all my fault for bringing so many dresses. We can unload some of them. What if Isabella catches a cold out on the water?"

"Nobody's unloading anything!"

Luca spun around and snapped at me, "Isabella, grow up! That banquet is about business. Do you want everyone looking down on us because we show up wearing the wrong clothes?"

I snapped the latches shut on my weapons case and rose to my feet.

Then I walked straight toward the three huge cases of dresses.

I gave the cases one cold look, raised my foot, and kicked one as hard as I could.

Bam!

The lock flew open, sending expensive lace gowns covered in tiny diamonds spilling across the floor.

Sofia shrieked, "My dresses!"

I looked Victor straight in the eye.

"You're filling our only armored helicopter with dresses? Tell me, Don, did you forget every security rule this family has?"

Luca's face went red with rage. He pointed at me and started yelling, "Drop the goddamn crazy act! You're a useless waste of space who can't even tell friend from enemy. If you come to that banquet, you'll only embarrass the family!"

My right hand wrapped around the grip of the gun at my hip as I walked toward him.

"Say that again?"

We were seconds away from drawing our guns when Victor stepped between us.

His voice took on the commanding tone he always used as Don. "Enough! Isabella, since you think you're so tough, you're staying at the main house tonight to think about what you've done. You won't set foot outside without my permission!"

Then Victor pulled the still-sobbing Sofia into his arms.

"We're leaving!"

The three of them stormed out with a small army of bodyguards. The door slammed shut behind them. Not one of them looked back.

By the time night fell, the house was quiet.

I calmly picked up my weapons case.

Then I slipped out the back door and headed alone for the helipad behind the house.

This time, I wasn't being left behind. I was leaving them.

I was done being the unwanted extra in their little world, where there was only room for the three of them.

Luca looked at the row of gun barrels pointed at him and finally retreated to his car, humiliated.Natasha leaned against the sandbags and gave an amused whistle."Commander, I had no idea you were engaged this whole time."For the first time, I could talk about the past without feeling anything."He stopped seeing himself as my fiancé a long time ago, so there was no reason to mention it."It had happened three years ago at a family banquet.A capo had too much to drink and joked that Luca looked at Sofia with more desire than he'd ever shown his own fiancée.Sofia's eyes immediately filled with tears. She quickly stepped away from Luca."Hey, that's a nasty joke! Stop it! Isabella is my best friend in this family! I swore that even if I stayed at the bottom forever, I'd never steal my best friend's man!"Luca immediately stepped forward. In front of the entire family, he scoffed, "That was just a joke our elders made years ago after one too many cheap martinis. No one should take it

That night, the searchlights at the base swept over the empty land outside.Natasha didn't hold back as she tore apart Sofia's little game piece by piece."No real soldier would leave a comrade to die in a firefight, let alone string two men along at the same time. Everything she's done has been calculated. She used those two men to steal resources from you, keep you—the rightful heiress—under her thumb, and clear her own path to the top."I'd always told myself that Sofia came from nothing and simply didn't understand how our world worked. But Natasha's words finally shattered that illusion.Natasha cleaned her dagger as she warned me never to turn my back on someone that ruthless. Now that I finally saw Sofia for who she was, I felt sick.I logged into my family's internal network and sent Sofia an official top-level notice ending our friendship and cutting all ties between us. Then I froze her access to all supplies and resources. While I was at it, I banned Victor and Luca from set

The peace didn't last long.Carter called again on the encrypted line, his voice tense. "Isabella, the Don has formed a major alliance with the Corvino family aboard that cruise ship. To prove his sincerity, he's promised to make Portopalo a shared base."I snorted."He's probably too busy drinking and chasing women on that ship to remember where I draw the line. As long as I'm alive, no one is taking this territory from me."Two years ago, I'd tried to set up a private, heavily armed guard unit with my own money.Victor had done everything he could to stop me. "Girls don't need heavy firepower. It only attracts trouble."Then he'd taken my entire weapons allocation and given it to Sofia's private guards instead. All because he wanted her to feel "safer."Now he was doing it again—giving away my territory to strengthen his own position.I had barely finished speaking when another voice cut into the channel."Isabella." Victor's voice was cold and commanding. "You've made your point. No

Early the next morning, Natasha kept her word and took me straight into a real combat zone near the border.Along the way, she made me close my eyes and track people by sound. She also taught me to spot the marks rival families used to identify themselves. At a dimly lit underground market, Natasha gave me my first real test: find the enemy mole meeting a contact somewhere in the crowd. My palms were slick with sweat. Three times, I picked the wrong person and nearly took a bullet for it.Each time, Natasha covered me with calm, steady fire and got me out safely. On my fourth try, I spotted a man nearby pretending to read a newspaper. Half a snake tattoo peeked out from under his sleeve. That was him. I didn't hesitate.I fired once. He dropped, and the crowd scattered.Natasha whistled and gave me a hard slap on the shoulder."Nice shot! When I was training, I once shot a hole through my instructor's hat and had to run six miles as punishment."We both burst out laughing in the smoke-

The range reeked of gunpowder.Natasha stripped an assault rifle with one hand. Then she gave me a playful shrug, as if trying to put me at ease."Sure, I'm a hitwoman, but I'm pretty easy to get along with. Just don't piss me off. I'll have my gun out before you even know what happened."I couldn't help relaxing a little. After that, she took me to the black market to shop for tactical gear.I could tell at a glance that she knew guns and ammo inside out.I hesitated for a long moment before finally telling her the truth. "Natasha, I have clinical face blindness. Without a family tattoo or some other mark to go by, I can't tell friend from enemy. That's why I've never done a hit on my own."Natasha paused, a magazine still in her hand. The playful look vanished from her face."I used to have a blind spot too."She looked me straight in the eye."My instructor was tough as hell, but he trained it out of me. So until you get past yours, I'll train you myself."That word—training—sent a

The helicopter sliced through the clouds. An encrypted call from Carter came through my headset."Isabella!" Carter sounded worried. "Portopalo is still unstable. Keep an eye out for assassins. Be careful around the old guard. You don't know who you can trust yet. Come back alive.""Understood. You take care too."I hung up, my eyes burning.Just then, several new messages popped up in the group chat.Luca had posted a group photo taken on the VIP deck of a cruise ship.Sofia stood in the middle, holding a glass of champagne, with Victor and Luca on either side of her like personal bodyguards. Then Sofia sent another message."Can someone Photoshop Isabella in? A family should be together."A moment later, she posted her own edit. She'd crudely pasted my face onto the body of an armed guard at the very edge of the cruise ship—someone whose job was to take a bullet for the three of them.Victor and Luca immediately filled the chat with praise and emojis.I stared at the screen, memories
