Chapter 2

Author: Lonely
I chuckled. It wasn’t clear yet who would be begging whom.

Mindy’s grandfather left behind a will before his death, stating that she had to marry me in order to inherit 50 million dollars from him. Otherwise, the will would be rendered invalid.

James held her back and scoffed at me.

“You and that West woman who got disfigured from a car accident and ended up infertile are a match made in heaven! When you see for yourself how ugly Charmaine West is, don’t end up crying in fright on your wedding night. I don’t want to see you running to Mindy’s place, crying and pleading for her to see you!”

I rebutted him with a smile, “Well, someone else might just come begging me before my wedding night for the sake of her inheritance!”

Mindy glared at me with bloodshot eyes as she bit out, “Dream on! Jerry Bale, you'll be the one begging me at the end of the day!”

My eyes narrowed, and I said unceremoniously, “Ms. Sullivan has lost her mind. Please see her out.”

In this life, I would never fall for James and her trap.

-

The West family agreed very readily to the marriage. Yet, after discussing the date of the wedding, a headline went viral online.

[Jerry Bale marries the hideous daughter of the West family to exact revenge on Mindy Sullivan]

The article didn't just vilify me as a simp at Mindy’s beck and call. It even claimed that I had sold myself to Mdm. Yardley, who was well-known to have a strange fetish, and that I was all spent with indulgence.

The elders of both families made it clear that if I did not resolve this issue, the wedding would be called off.

The writer of the article did not even bother hiding his identity. His name, James Lambert, was written blatantly on it.

At the peak of my rage, I sought out James during the birthday party Mindy organized for him.

When Mindy saw me, she swirled his wine glass casually and chuckled, “Regretting your decision so soon? It’s too late even if you were to kneel and beg me now.”

James sneered and wrapped an arm around Mindy as he said, “Jerry, it’s too late to regret now. But if you beg me, I might just put in a good word for you.”

I charged forward, grabbed James’ collar, balled up my fist, and punched him square in the face.

“James Lambert! Have you thought of how that article you wrote could negatively impact the company? Killing you twice over wouldn’t be enough to make up for the crash in stock prices!”

Mindy flung a wine glass my way and pulled James behind her. “How dare you punch James! You’re tired of living, aren’t you? Jerry Bale, apologize at once!”

Glass shards grazed the back of my hand. I clenched my fists and roared with anger, “Why should I apologize? You should ask James what he did!”

I pulled my phone out and showed her the article that had caused Bale Corporation’s stock prices to plummet for three days straight, resulting in losses amounting to tens of millions.

She furrowed her brows and flung my phone back at me. “Even if James really wrote that article, he only did it because you angered him first! Whatever it is, you should apologize to James!”

James had wanted to explain himself, but the sight of Mindy defending him to her death made his arrogance grow.

“Jerry, I did write that article and publish it, but it’s all true! You should be blaming yourself for doing what you did and bringing harm upon Bale Corporation. Why are you pushing the blame on me instead?”

The look of nonchalance on Mindy’s face made my fists shake uncontrollably.

The article James wrote was filled with half-truths. That night, Mindy was drugged during a business dinner and she had called me, crying for help.

To save her from those bigwigs, I had to seek help from Mdm. Yardley who always had a penchant for me. I stayed by her side, serving her like a slave for three days and three nights.

After the ordeal, Mindy looked at me brokenheartedly as she fed me my medicine.

“I was too careless that night. Jerry, I’ll repay your kindness with my life.”

As I spoke, I pulled out my backup phone and contacted the company’s bodyguard. James pounced at me to try to snatch the phone away before smashing everything in the office.“Don’t even think about it! Jerry Bale, today will be your doomsday!”The fire outside the office burned brighter and smoke started filling the entire office. Both James and I didn’t have the energy to fight anymore.I coughed violently and covered my nose and mouth with the curtain and fought hard to stay alert. The bodyguard would be here any minute now.Five minutes later, I heard someone banging on the door. Charmaine’s voice as she choked back sobs.“Honey! Are you inside? Are you alright, honey? Don’t be scared! I’ll knock the door down and rescue you!”What was she doing here? How did she manage to enter with such a huge fire burning away?My clouded consciousness slowly grew clearer at her voice. I forced myself up and crawled to the door, saying weakly, “Honey, I’m here… The bodyguards will be here

Mindy lowered her head low, guilt-ridden and not daring to look me in the eye. She stammered out her reply. “I…I was just confused about who was in the right and who was in the wrong. James talked about you that way. I felt indignant over you making use of me, so I tried to find a way to exact revenge on you… It’s all James’ fault for sowing discord between us! It’s all his fault!”My bodyguard came over to clear the area, chasing away the reporters and unceremoniously dragging her away at the same time.Upon realizing how cold and heartless I was being to her, Mindy could no longer suppress the panic she was feeling inside. She crawled desperately over to me and cried, “I was wrong, Jerry. Please don’t chase me away! I was just angry just now. Let’s talk things through, okay? I waited for so many days just to have a good talk with you. We still stand a chance, don’t we?”I completely ignored her and walked on with Charmaine’s hand in mine.-To stop Mindy from harassing me, I

It was so nerve-wrecking at that time, I didn’t consider the possibility that she was using Morse code to hint to me the identity of the man.I belatedly realized during the second half of the wedding ceremony that she was already trying to tell me that the man was Jayden Ward.I was beginning to realize that my newly-wedded wife wasn’t as innocent as she looked.Charmaine flipped over and sat on my waist, a smirk on her face revealing her true colors.“What? Regretting marrying me now that you realize that I was using you?”I looked at her with a smile. “You know I don’t mean that. I just want to know why you didn’t stop Jayden even when you knew that he had followed you onto the ship.”She laid on my chest once more and sighed before speaking in the most refreshingly natural and unpretentious manner. “If I were there, Jayden would undoubtedly take me away. Everything I’ve done so far was to avoid seeing him. You might not believe this, but two months ago, I started having the

“Yes, I’m going ahead with it. In fact, I’m going all out with the celebration so everyone can witness how grand an event my union with my wife is.”I had deliberately made clear my intention to go on with the wedding not to anger Mindy, but to let those who think they can bring harm upon the Bale family see that they’ll end up just like Jayden. When we reached the shore, all those who were posting comments, whether genuine or fake, would fear me because of what happened on this cruise ship.It was the outcome I had wanted. This thought had never crossed Mindy’s mind. She initially just wanted to ruin this wedding to get her grandfather’s inheritance.Yet, she witnessed how determined I was to marry Charmaine. Even her promise to fulfil all my wishes and marry me couldn’t change my mind about marrying Charmaine. She couldn’t figure out how everything ended up this way.All she knew was how painful it felt to see me going toward Charmaine.“Never! I’ll never allow you to marry h

“I’d better marry you. James can have the 50 million dollar inheritance! You should be satisfied to have me, right?” Mindy went on.I stared at her for a second before bursting into laughter. “Mindy Sullivan, are you dreaming? Do you really think you’re the savior of the world?”She frowned, looking displeased. “I saved you! Instead of thanking me, you’re scolding me?”I pulled a gun from my back and shot the ceiling. Bodyguards who were hiding in the bilge came swarming out.Jayden was stunned to see over 50 armed bodyguards surrounding him and started shooting indiscriminately. His random shootings were nothing to my professionally trained bodyguards, however, and he was quickly subdued.I pointed a gun at his head and asked with a smile, “Mr. Ward, I’ve already warned you not to go around bullying people. Do you not understand the rationale behind that?”Jayden saw that I was about to press the trigger. He was so frightened he immediately went on his knees to beg for mercy.“

“Exactly. She even let James Lambert publish a nonsensical article. Everyone knows how Jerry feels about her. All his love and devotion, wasted on an ingrate!”“She even texted me asking where Jerry’s wedding was going to be held, crying over how regretful she feels and how she had to find Jerry no matter what. Dream on!”I held Charmaine’s hand and looked at her with joy-filled eyes. I was nervous and emotional, but sweet joy filled my heart. As the Master of Ceremonies shared his blessings for us as the newlyweds, I knelt on one knee and put the ring on Charmaine’s finger. The guests were witnessing a beautiful, happy moment.Suddenly, everything went dark. There was a power outage on the ship.“Ah! Honey, I’m scared…”Charmaine’s hands were shaking, and I quickly pulled her into my embrace. Our wedding was held at night, and we were in the middle of the sea. The absence of lights meant that we couldn’t even see our own fingers in the dark. The darkness made my senses more k
