The Dinner Trap

Damian’s POV

Lila didn't say anything.

She just stood there between us with her bag from the deli and a funny little twist in her smile, as if we were two kids caught sneaking out after dark.

It took me a while to breathe.

Looking forward to the doubt. The question or accusation.

It never came though.

Instead, she cocked her head and remarked. “You two looked like you were having a serious talk.”

Eliot put himself together before I did. "Yes we were. Very serious one.”

Her eyes moved back and forth between us. “I thought you guys didn’t like each other at all.”

My pulse thudded in my ears.

She smiled and took another step closer. "I didn't expect you two would be down here whispering secrets like teenage girls, though."

I tried hard to smile. “We were just… clearing the air,” I said nervously.

"Anyway," she said with a wink as she walked past us, "I hope you figured it out. There should be less stress in this house.”

Eliot couldn't help but laugh. But I didn'

The Breaking PointDamian’s POVEven though the windows were closed, it felt cold inside. My knuckles were still clenched from what I had just walked in on: Aaron, in my apartment, his hand on Eliot’s shoulder, whispering something low and venomous at that. Eliot’s face had turned pale. His lips pressed into a tight line, his hands shaking at his side.Leo took a step forward as Lila slowly got up from the couch. It was hard to read her face. "Damian? "What happened? We were worried when you guys didn't come back in time.”I didn't say anything right away. The words were too hard for me to say. I looked at them first, then at Eliot. “Aaron was here," I finally said. "I caught him threatening Eliot. He doesn't look like he is bluffing.”Lila's eyes got smaller. She couldn't help but curl her fingers into the bottom of her blouse. Leo looked between us, eyes searching Eliot's face. "He had the nerve to show up here?”Eliot rubbed the back of his neck, and every action was tense.

Twisted TiesDamian’s POVThere was less air in my lungs that morning, making me feel like I had been breathing smoke instead of oxygen. It wasn't just about yesterday's incidents at the courthouse or the fact that Eliot slept so little that night, curled up on the couch's edge as if he didn't want to take up any space. It was the silence. Too still and loaded. It felt like something would break when I stopped pretending like everything was fine.I sat on the arm of the couch, with a warm cup of coffee untouched in my hands. The sun lit up through the half-closed blinds, cutting soft lines of gold across Eliot’s pale face. He was staring blankly at the ceiling, his shoulders pulled tight under the hoodie he wore, my hoodie. He hadn't talked much since what happened in the courthouse.I hadn't either. But the silence between us didn't help now. It was deafening.I slowly let out a breath and put the mug down on the table. "Eliot." He slowly turned his head toward me, but his eyes w

TargetedDamian’s POVThe ringing in my ears hadn’t stopped.Even after the shot, the screams, and the broken glass, there was only the dull thrum of adrenaline coursing through my body.I stayed low as before, one arm wrapped tight around Eliot’s shoulders, my other hand pressed to the floor now as if I could hold us both down. His body was rigid under mine with his breath shallow but steady. But I felt the tension in him like a pulse. The sounds of chaos had slowed down around us. Someone kept yelling at everyone to calm down. Then there was silence again. No more shots. The guards at the building rushed in, armed and ready. Their voices were clear and authoritative. People who had been hiding behind pillars and chairs slowly stood up, as if they weren't sure if they were going to safety or getting shot again."Everyone stay calm!" came the voice of a guard. The area is being secured!"Another cop walked right up to us. He had a square jaw and a clean black uniform. "Are you

The RejectionEliot’s POVI didn’t sleep. Not because I wasn't sleepy, but I couldn’t.The silence in the holding cell wasn’t peaceful; it was thick and pressed against my skin like the walls were closing in on me.My fingers itched from the cold. I rubbed them together slowly, trying to get rid of the sting in my knuckles. I hadn’t eaten anything either. I had lost my appetite.Because I knew she would come back. The envelope was sitting on the far side of the bench, unopened. Its white surface was dirty with dust, which could have been caused by hesitation. I hadn't opened it yet. I didn't have to. Because I already knew what was inside.I had already seen the contract once before. Vera’s terms were simple: her money in exchange for my silence. Her protection in exchange for my disappearance and leaving everything behind. Her leash in exchange for my freedom. But I also knew what signing it would mean.Damian would be alone again. And the words she left behind last night hadn’t

Desperate MeasuresDamian’s POVAs I stepped out of the building, the cold wind hit me in the face. But I barely felt it.In fact I couldn’t feel much of anything. Just the weight of everything pressing down like iron.Ten million dollarsIt wasn't just a bail condition. It was a message. And it was meant to break me.I squished my hands into the pockets of my coat pockets and gripped the lining like I could force myself to stay together. But it wasn’t working.Eliot was still there. Still behind that wall. And I had nothing left to give. This was Maxwell's doing, no doubt. The moment I dared to question him, he pulled the strings he had been tightening around my neck for years. And now, I was broke in every way that counted.Except in the part that mattered most.I wasn’t done fighting. I won't back down this way.Lila found me standing alone by the concrete planter near the exit, my eyes fixed on nothing in particular. She didn't say anything right away. She just stood next to me w

Shackled HeartsDamian’s POVThe door to the hall opened with a click that was too soft for the chaos it carried. And Eliot walked in.Even though the sound of the handcuffs wasn't very loud, it shook my chest like thunder. His clothes were simple. He wore the same dark sweater he always wore around the apartment when things were soft, quiet, and easy. But now, nothing about him looked like he belonged to that world anymore. His shoulders were stiff, not out of defiance, but because he was holding back.Every inch of him was tense, like the walls would fall in if he moved too fast.Maybe they already had.He didn't look for me in the room.He didn’t need to.His eyes were focused, cold, controlled. But I knew better.I could see the storm just under his skin. Each of his steps was filled with pain with fear disguised as composure. He took his seat beside his defense attorney. The cuffs were taken off for just long enough for him to calm down, and then they were put back on.Even that
