The Decision

Emma sat perfectly still in front of the dark laptop screen, her fingers resting on the edge of the table. The apartment was unusually quiet, the kind of silence that felt heavy rather than peaceful. Outside, the faint sound of traffic drifted through the window, reminding her that the world was still moving forward even though her own life felt suspended in time.

Her reflection stared back at her from the black screen. Dark circles framed her eyes, and her hair was slightly tangled from a restless night spent tossing and turning in bed.

She had barely slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, the same image replayed in her mind—Daniel standing beside the bed, Claire pulling the sheets around herself, both of them staring at her like guilty strangers.

The memory made her stomach twist painfully.

Emma leaned back in the chair and rubbed her temples slowly, trying to push the image away.

She didn’t want to think about them anymore.

But it was harder than she expected.

Three years was not something a person could erase overnight.

Three years of shared mornings, late-night conversations, weekend plans, and whispered promises about the future.

Three years she had believed were real.

Now they felt like scenes from someone else’s life.

Her gaze drifted around the apartment. The place suddenly looked unfamiliar, as if she were seeing it for the first time.

Daniel’s jacket was still hanging on the chair near the door.

A half-empty mug sat on the kitchen counter.

The faint scent of last night’s unfinished dinner lingered in the air.

Everything felt like a reminder of a life that had already ended.

Emma pushed the chair back and stood up abruptly.

She needed air.

She walked toward the window and pulled the curtains aside. Outside, the city stretched beneath the early morning sky, busy and alive. Cars moved along the streets below, people hurried along sidewalks with cups of coffee in their hands, and somewhere a distant siren echoed faintly.

Life was continuing.

Just not for her.

Not yet.

Her phone buzzed softly on the table.

Emma glanced at it and saw Mia’s name on the screen.

She hesitated before answering.

“Hey,” Emma said quietly when she picked up.

“Emma! Finally,” Mia’s voice came through immediately. “I’ve been calling you since last night. Are you okay?”

Emma exhaled slowly.

“I’m… managing.”

There was a pause.

“Managing?” Mia repeated. “Emma, I would have burned the whole apartment down if that happened to me.”

Emma let out a small laugh despite herself.

“I thought about it,” she admitted.

“Where are you now?” Mia asked.

“At the apartment.”

“With him?”

Emma’s expression hardened slightly.

“No,” she said firmly. “He left"

“Good,” Mia replied instantly. “That idiot doesn't deserve you".

Emma leaned against the window frame.

“I know,” she said softly.

And for the first time since last night, she truly believed it.

“Listen,” Mia continued, “if you need somewhere to stay, my place is always open.”

“Thanks,” Emma said. “But I think I need to figure some things out first.”

“Like what?”

Emma turned toward the laptop again.

“That internship email,” she said slowly.

“The one in Paris?”

“Yes.”

Mia gasped loudly through the phone.

“You’re kidding.”

“I’m thinking about it.”

“Emma,” Mia said, her voice suddenly serious, “you have to go.”

Emma frowned slightly.

“You didn’t even let me finish.”

“I don’t need to,” Mia replied. “You just got betrayed by your fiancé and your sister. If there was ever a time for a dramatic life change, this is it.”

Emma couldn’t help smiling faintly.

“When you say it like that, it sounds insane.”

“Maybe it is,” Mia said. “But sometimes insane decisions turn out to be the best ones.”

Emma glanced down at the laptop again.

The email was still open.

Please confirm your acceptance within 12 hours.

Her heart beat a little faster.

“I’ve never even been to Paris,” Emma admitted.

“So?” Mia said. “That’s the fun part.”

Emma imagined stepping off a plane into a completely different world.

New streets.

New people.

No memories of Daniel.

No reminders of Claire.

A completely fresh start.

The thought sent a strange mixture of excitement and fear rushing through her chest.

“What if I fail?” Emma asked quietly.

“You won’t,” Mia replied.

“And if I do?”

“Then at least you failed while living in Paris.”

Emma laughed softly again.

“You’re impossible.”

“And you’re overthinking,” Mia said. “Emma, listen to me. Staying there will only keep reminding you of what happened. But Paris? That could be the beginning of something new.”

Emma looked around the apartment one more time.

Mia was right.

Every corner held a memory she didn’t want anymore.

“Okay,” Emma said slowly.

“Okay what?”

“I’ll do it.”

There was a loud cheer on the other end of the phone.

“Yes! That’s my girl!”

Emma ended the call a few minutes later and walked back to the laptop.

Her heart pounded harder with every step.

This was it.

A single decision that could completely change the direction of her life.

She sat down slowly.

Her hand rested on the mouse.

For a moment, fear crept back into her mind.

What if she was running away?

What if Paris didn’t fix anything?

But another thought pushed through the doubt.

What if it did?

Emma took a deep breath.

Then she clicked Confirm.

The page refreshed.

A new message appeared on the screen.

Welcome to the Paris International Marketing Internship Program.

Emma stared at the words for several seconds.

It felt unreal.

She had actually done it.

She was leaving.

A small smile slowly spread across her face.

For the first time since last night, hope flickered inside her chest.

Maybe this wasn’t the end of her story.

Maybe it was just the beginning

  • In The City Of Love    Quiet Lessons of the Heart

The city felt different today. Emma walked slowly through the streets of Paris, her steps unhurried, her mind quieter than it had been the day before. The excitement of discovery was still there, but it had softened into something more thoughtful, more observant. She found herself drawn into a small café tucked between two narrow buildings. The soft chime of the door announced her arrival, and immediately, she was wrapped in warmth—the rich aroma of coffee, the faint sweetness of pastries, and the low hum of conversations blending together like music. She chose a seat by the window. Outside, life moved as usual—people passing by, laughter echoing faintly—but inside, everything felt still. Peaceful. Emma wrapped her hands around the warm cup placed in front of her and let her gaze wander. A couple sat across from her, sharing a slice of cake, their laughter quiet but genuine. A man in the corner scribbled into a notebook, pausing occasionally as if searching for the right words.

  • In The City Of Love    The Man who didn't smile

Emma strolled along the narrow cobblestone streets, the late afternoon sunlight painting golden streaks across the buildings. She had been wandering for hours, letting the rhythm of Paris guide her. Cafés spilled music and laughter into the streets, vendors called out the day’s fresh pastries, and the scent of roasted coffee beans mingled with blooming flowers in window boxes. Everything felt alive, vibrant, and somehow overwhelming. They were finally done for the day. Emma walked beside Claire, her legs slightly tired but her mind still buzzing from everything she had seen. The city had been overwhelming in the best way, but now, as they made their way back to the café, something else occupied her thoughts. Him. She slowed slightly, glancing behind her. “Wait… is he still following us?” Claire didn’t turn. “Don’t worry about him—just pretend he’s not there.” Emma let out a small, nervous laugh. “That’s… kind of hard to do.” Her gaze lingered a second longer before she fa

  • In The City Of Love    First steps in Paris

The morning sun spilling through her curtains felt like a sign of happiness. She felt giddy, knowing something good would come her way today. She was planning to take a walk, as she had been given a week from work to acquaint herself with Paris: its language, culture, and people . Although she had taken some French classes, her skills were still rusty, and there was no better way to sharpen them than by interacting with people. Dressed in a bright, sunny dress that clearly reflected her mood, she was ready for Paris. She had previously made a list of places she wanted to visit, but today she decided to explore her surroundings first. Someone clearing their throat pulled her from her thoughts. She realized she had wandered to a nearby café. Looking at the distance between her apartment and the café, she was glad she hadn’t gone too far. “Hmm hmm,” the person cleared their throat again. She had been lost in thought—after-effects of heartbreak, she guessed—before finally turning to th

  • In The City Of Love    First Day in Paris

Emma adjusted the strap of her satchel as she stepped off the taxi, taking in the narrow cobblestone streets of Paris. The morning sun glinted off wrought-iron balconies and café windows, and the faint scent of freshly baked bread filled the air. Her heart raced — this was it, her first day at the internship that she was referred for through her school's platform for graduates. She smoothed her navy coat over her shoulders, brushed a loose chestnut strand of hair behind her ear, and adjusted her glasses. Her hazel eyes reflected a mixture of excitement and nerves. She wasn’t a stranger to taking chances, but this — stepping into a foreign city for a marketing internship — felt like standing on the edge of the world. Her thoughts wandered to her parents. Victoria, who had always encouraged curiosity and creativity, would have been delighted to see her exploring such an opportunity. James, practical and warm, would have reminded her to hold her head high, to approach the unknown with co

  • In The City Of Love    Arrival in Paris

Emma’s suitcase rattled softly as she maneuvered through the crowded airport. Travelers hustled past, announcements echoed overhead, and the scent of coffee drifted from a nearby café. Her heart pounded as she spotted Mia standing near the gate, her dark braid falling over her shoulder, scarf wrapped loosely around her neck, hands stuffed into the pockets of her jacket.“Mia…” Emma’s voice was almost a whisper as she approached.Mia’s green eyes widened, a faint tremor in her lips. “Emma… you’re really doing this,” she said, stepping forward. “You’re really leaving.”Emma forced a small smile. “I… I have to. For me.”Mia shook her head, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “I know… and I’m proud of you. But that doesn’t make it easy. I’m going to miss you.”Emma’s throat tightened. “I’ll miss you too. You’ve been my anchor, Mia. The one who told me the truth even when I didn’t want to hear it. The one who kept me grounded when I felt like everything was falling apart.”Mia’s lips

Emma stood in the middle of the apartment, staring at the open suitcase lying on the bed.It looked strangely small for something meant to hold the pieces of her life.Clothes were scattered across the mattress, some neatly folded, others tossed carelessly as if she couldn’t decide whether they belonged in the suitcase or in the past she was trying to leave behind.Packing should have been simple. But every item she picked up seemed to carry a memory.Emma reached for a blue sweater hanging in the closet. Her fingers paused the moment she touched the fabric.Daniel had given it to her two winters ago.She remembered the day clearly. They had been walking through a crowded shopping street while snow drifted gently through the air. Daniel had insisted she try it on, saying the color made her eyes look brighter.Back then, she had believed moments like that meant something. Now the memory felt hollow.Emma pulled the sweater off the hanger and stared at it for a long moment before foldin
