Chapter 2

Author: Whoa's That?
I lay in the hospital bed for fourteen long days.

I suffered a severe compound fracture in my right tibia and fibula. The doctors had to perform an open reduction and internal fixation surgery, during which a steel plate and eight steel pins were inserted into my lower leg.

There were six beds in my ward. While other patients had family members tending to their needs, the only company at my bedside was the nurse arriving with my scheduled anti-inflammatory injections.

The freeway patrol cops had come by to take my statement. As for Shawn, he knew that I hadn’t died in that wreck, yet he hadn’t sent so much as a single text.

On the day I was discharged, I changed into loose sweatpants, propped myself up on the hospital-issued crutches, and called a cab home myself. It was the house we were supposed to move into together after we got married next month.

When I unlocked the door, I saw two pairs of shoes scattered messily across the rug in the entryway. The hum of a humidifier echoed from the living room, and the coffee table was piled high with imported fruits.

Willow was sitting cross-legged right on my sofa, cradling the custom hand-painted mug I had commissioned someone to make. Shawn sat right beside her, staring down intently as he examined a medicine box in his hands, while the sound of chopping drifted out from the kitchen. It was Shawn’s mother cooking.

Hearing the front door open, Shawn and Willow looked up at the same time.

Shawn’s hand holding the medicine box froze mid-air. An awkward look crossed his face, but it was quickly replaced by a dark, stern scowl.

“You were discharged today? Why didn’t you let me know so I could pick you up?”

“Pick me up?” I asked, leaning on my crutches as I made my way inside, the rubber tips thudding against the hardwood floor. “I was hospitalized for fourteen days. I called you twice. The first time you hung up on me, and the second time your phone was switched off. What state secrets were you so busy with that you couldn’t even spare five seconds?”

Shawn took a deep breath. He slammed the medicine box down hard onto the coffee table, adopting the same lecturing posture he used to intimidate his subordinates at the precinct.

“After you were put into the ambulance that day, the precinct leadership and the media were all at the hospital offering their sympathies! I am the face of this precinct right now. If I didn’t step up to reassure a victim, how would that look to the public?”

His brows knitted tight, his eyes filled with disappointment in me. “Willow kept throwing up in the ER, and the chief specifically entrusted me with the responsibility of comforting her family. As my fiancée, instead of understanding the pressure I'm under, you’re standing here throwing a jealous tantrum over such a minor injury? Lea, when did you become so narrow-minded?”

“I crawled out of an exploding car and ended up with eight steel screws bolted into my leg. If I hadn’t saved my own life, I would be dead! And you call that a ‘minor injury’?”

“Lea, please don’t be mad at Shawn,” Willow said while she stood up, her eyes red with tears.

“It’s all my fault. Every time I close my eyes over the last few days, I’m flooded with images of the car crash. I’m too terrified to sleep alone at night. Shawn took pity on me and let me stay in the guest room for a few days. He’s just too conscientious. If you really can’t stand having me here, I’ll leave right now. It doesn’t matter even if I faint out on the streets…”

Shawn immediately reached out to steady her arm. He then glared at me, his voice rising sharply.

“Lea, do you really have to be so spiteful? Willow is only twenty-two. She’s just a young girl with no one else to rely on, and she’s been severely traumatized by such a horrific accident. What’s wrong with offering her the guest room for a few days to recover? Can’t you be a little less heartless?”

“Heartless?” Seeing Shawn acting all self-righteous, I suddenly found the whole situation ironic.

I leaned on my crutches, moving forward until I stood right in front of the coffee table. Terrified, Willow shrank back into the corner of the sofa, her hands around my mug.

I reached out, snatched the cup from her grasp, and hurled it into the trash can.

“If you think I’m so heartless, then get out of this house that I paid half the down payment for.”

I looked up and stared at Shawn.

“Shawn, let’s get one thing straight. The down payment for this place was four hundred thousand dollars. I’ve paid half of it, and my name is right there on the deed. Who are you to bring a total outsider into my home, let her sleep in my guest room, and use my belongings without getting my consent?”

I kept my phone on speakerphone, placing it right on the coffee table so I could listen while I changed the dressing on my injured right leg.Once she was done crying her eyes out, I finally spoke up. “Mrs. Adams, if I hadn’t managed to crawl out of that car on my own that day, I wouldn’t even be alive right now. You guys still have your lives, don’t you? You can earn the money back eventually. Go work retail or do some housekeeping. There must be something you know how to do.”With that, I ended the call and immediately blocked her number. As for Willow, getting reassigned didn’t save her from her fate either. Joanne took a screenshot of the post Willow had shared on her social media feed and posted it online anonymously. Joanna didn’t exaggerate anything or add fuel to the fire; she simply laid out the most objective timeline comparison. Yet, the power of netizens was terrifying. It didn’t take long before Willow’s entire identity was exposed.A freshly graduated trainee who no

Shawn looked as if all the strength had been drained from his body, and he collapsed onto the sofa. This man, who was so used to controlling everything and who was always preaching about morality and righteousness, finally broke down at that moment.“Lea…” Shawn looked up, his face ashen, looking like a complete wreck.“We’ve been together for seven years. Do you really have to be so heartless? I know I was wrong! I’ll give you the apartment, and I’ll give you all the savings too! Just don’t shut down the system, okay? Next month is the selection for the deputy chief position. I’ve worked hard for years to earn this chance. If you shut down the system, my entire career will be ruined for the rest of my life!”He even made a move to slide off the sofa, burying his head in his hands. However, Joanna was quick. With a swift movement, she kicked the coffee table out of the way and stood in front of me.“Save your disgusting little tricks! When you left Lea to die in that leaking car,

The righteous confidence on Shawn’s face crumbled as the footage played on.When the video finally ended, the screen plunged back into darkness.Shawn stared blankly at the black screen. His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down, and every last drop of color drained from his face. He reached out toward the laptop, but his fingers were trembling too hard to press any key.“This… this isn’t the complete footage,” he said, his voice hoarse. “It’s an angle issue. The dashcam’s angle couldn’t possibly capture what I was doing at that moment–”“Couldn’t capture what?” I sat calmly on the sofa, quietly watching him struggle. “Shawn, even the traffic police have verified the integrity of the video. You had a full two minutes before the fire even started.”Shawn snapped his head up, his eyes bloodshot. He lunged forward, trying to grab my wrist, but Joanna stepped in and shoved him back.“Lea, listen to me!” Shawn said in a panic. “My mind was just consumed with saving the injured at the ti

This post, which was blocked only from my friends, had spread through the department’s internal colleague chats and acquaintance circles. Every single word trampled on my dignity as Shawn’s legitimate fiancée, all to showcase how special and understanding she was. Now, everyone believed that Shawn was a selfless hero who had painfully left his fiancée behind for the greater good, and Willow was a sweet, sensible police officer trainee who deeply cared for her hero. As for me, I had become a malicious woman who didn’t care about the bigger picture; I couldn’t comprehend a police officer’s duty and was even kicking up a fuss in the hospital to hold a hero back. When Shawn saw the screenshot on the floor, the mask he had been wearing finally cracked, but he still kept up that high-and-mighty rhetoric of his.“Willow just survived a near-death experience and made a post on social media to express her feelings. What is there to make such a big fuss about? Lea, do you really have to

Across the screen, I could almost smell the bitter stench of burning flesh from that day. When a person was abandoned in the face of death, it was impossible not to feel resentment.Yet, I suddenly realized that rather than hating him, I felt sorry for myself, for the version of me who, even while hurting so badly that I almost fainted in that sea of fire, still fought desperately to survive. There was no greater sorrow than the death of one’s heart.“Luke,” I said calmly, “make two copies. Have one as material for a lawsuit to submit to the police and the court, and send the other one to Shawn and his lawyer. Also, draft two documents for me. One will be a property division agreement to dissolve our cohabitation relationship, and the other will be a notice of revocation regarding my design patent licensing agreement.”Luke adjusted his glasses and nodded. “Alright. I’ll get right on it.”The next morning, I finally picked up Shawn’s phone call.“Lea, what on earth do you want?

The waiting time felt exceptionally long.Over the past two days, I had received dozens of messages from Shawn. On the first day, Shawn’s message was condescending. [Lea Summer, are you done throwing a tantrum out there? Willow has moved back to her shared apartment today, so get yourself home right now. Your leg isn’t even healed yet. What are you out there doing on your own? I’ll pick you up after work tomorrow.]On the second day, as the deadline approached for the state inspection of the city police department’s ‘Eagle Eye’ intelligent policing system, his tone transformed into a frantic, furious interrogation. [Lea! What is the meaning of this? Why did you shut down the backend permissions for the system your company provided? Do you know the state inspection team is over at the precinct today to watch the demo? You need to lift the restriction on the system right now. This system dictates whether I can be promoted to deputy chief at the end of the year. Stop being so ignor
