Chapter 3

Author: Whoa's That?
Shawn froze. He clearly didn’t expect the very first thing I would settle with him was the ownership of the house.

“Lea, what’s the point in counting pennies like this?” Shawn barked. “Yes, half the house belongs to you, but didn’t I pay for the other half? Right now, I am exercising my share of the right to allow Willow to stay here for a few days. She’s from out of town, and she just graduated only to experience a traumatic event like this. She doesn’t even have anyone to take care of her. Am I supposed to send her back to that dreary, cramped shared apartment?”

“You could’ve rented a place for her. You could’ve arranged a staff dormitory for her. You could’ve paid for a hotel room,” I replied. “But instead, you chose to let her live with you in our home!”

Willow came running over and grabbed my hand, tears streaming down her face.

“Lea, I’m so sorry. I really didn’t know this mug was yours. Shawn handed it to me, so I just used it… I know you’re angry at Shawn for saving me first, but I really couldn’t help it. I was in the backseat with my head bleeding, and I couldn’t even stand up straight. Shawn couldn’t just leave me abandoned on the highway, could he? Why do you have to take your anger out on me?”

I looked at the wound on her forehead, which was barely the size of a coin, and then looked down at my own right leg. It was wrapped in steel pins, swollen to twice the size of my left leg.

“Willow, since you brought up that day, let’s make things clear right now,” I said. “That day in the car, I clearly said that the bottom of the car was leaking fuel and could catch fire at any second. By the time Shawn carried you out, the fire had started. You were fully conscious, and you watched him lock me inside a fuel-leaking car with your own eyes. Did you say anything to remind him? Did you tell him even once to go back and save me first?”

Willow’s face instantly turned pale, and she couldn’t say anything.

“You didn’t,” I pressed on. “Not only did you not say a word, but you clung to his clothes, crying that you were dizzy, forcing him to walk you all the way past the guardrail. Willow, you had a mild concussion; you didn’t go blind. You graduated from the police academy too, so it’s impossible that you didn’t know the car was leaking fuel. Why are you playing innocent?”

“Lea, that’s enough!” Shawn snapped, suddenly stepping in front of Willow to shield her. “In a situation like that, Willow was scared out of her mind! How could she have had the mental capacity to care about whether the car was leaking fuel or not? Do you always have to twist people’s intentions into the most malicious things possible?”

“Alright. That’s enough, Lea,” Shawn’s mother called out with a stern face as she walked out of the kitchen.

“It’s all in the past now. You had the surgery, and isn’t your leg almost healed anyway? Everyone is safe, so why hold a grudge? Shawn has been overwhelmed with work and the aftermath of the crash for the past two weeks. You just got discharged from the hospital today. Do you have to turn the whole house upside down?”

In their eyes, I had become an unreasonable, shrewish woman throwing a tantrum. Trying to reason with people who refused to listen to human logic was nothing but a waste of my life.

I didn’t bother responding to them anymore. Turning around, I leaned on my crutches and headed straight toward the master bedroom.

“Where do you think you’re going? You come back just to make a scene, and now you want to leave without even apologizing to us?” Shawn shouted behind me.

I pushed open the bedroom door, pulled out the suitcase from the bottom of the closet, and balanced on one leg while grabbing a few changes of clothes to stuff inside.

Next went my toiletries, my laptop, and then my ID, passport, and bank cards from the bedside drawer. As for the envelope containing the property deed, I shoved it separately into my backpack.

Shawn followed me to the bedroom doorway, his expression finally shifting into one of panic.

“Lea, what kind of drama are you putting on now? Are you running away from home? You’re almost hitting thirty, yet you’re still playing this childish game of packing up and leaving whenever you’re unhappy. Your leg is broken. Where can you even go?”

I simply ignored him, and when I tried to pass by him, he reached out his arm, attempting to block my path.

“Stop making a scene, okay? You decorated every inch of this house yourself. Are you really just going to walk away from it?”

I kept my phone on speakerphone, placing it right on the coffee table so I could listen while I changed the dressing on my injured right leg.Once she was done crying her eyes out, I finally spoke up. “Mrs. Adams, if I hadn’t managed to crawl out of that car on my own that day, I wouldn’t even be alive right now. You guys still have your lives, don’t you? You can earn the money back eventually. Go work retail or do some housekeeping. There must be something you know how to do.”With that, I ended the call and immediately blocked her number. As for Willow, getting reassigned didn’t save her from her fate either. Joanne took a screenshot of the post Willow had shared on her social media feed and posted it online anonymously. Joanna didn’t exaggerate anything or add fuel to the fire; she simply laid out the most objective timeline comparison. Yet, the power of netizens was terrifying. It didn’t take long before Willow’s entire identity was exposed.A freshly graduated trainee who no

Shawn looked as if all the strength had been drained from his body, and he collapsed onto the sofa. This man, who was so used to controlling everything and who was always preaching about morality and righteousness, finally broke down at that moment.“Lea…” Shawn looked up, his face ashen, looking like a complete wreck.“We’ve been together for seven years. Do you really have to be so heartless? I know I was wrong! I’ll give you the apartment, and I’ll give you all the savings too! Just don’t shut down the system, okay? Next month is the selection for the deputy chief position. I’ve worked hard for years to earn this chance. If you shut down the system, my entire career will be ruined for the rest of my life!”He even made a move to slide off the sofa, burying his head in his hands. However, Joanna was quick. With a swift movement, she kicked the coffee table out of the way and stood in front of me.“Save your disgusting little tricks! When you left Lea to die in that leaking car,

The righteous confidence on Shawn’s face crumbled as the footage played on.When the video finally ended, the screen plunged back into darkness.Shawn stared blankly at the black screen. His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down, and every last drop of color drained from his face. He reached out toward the laptop, but his fingers were trembling too hard to press any key.“This… this isn’t the complete footage,” he said, his voice hoarse. “It’s an angle issue. The dashcam’s angle couldn’t possibly capture what I was doing at that moment–”“Couldn’t capture what?” I sat calmly on the sofa, quietly watching him struggle. “Shawn, even the traffic police have verified the integrity of the video. You had a full two minutes before the fire even started.”Shawn snapped his head up, his eyes bloodshot. He lunged forward, trying to grab my wrist, but Joanna stepped in and shoved him back.“Lea, listen to me!” Shawn said in a panic. “My mind was just consumed with saving the injured at the ti

This post, which was blocked only from my friends, had spread through the department’s internal colleague chats and acquaintance circles. Every single word trampled on my dignity as Shawn’s legitimate fiancée, all to showcase how special and understanding she was. Now, everyone believed that Shawn was a selfless hero who had painfully left his fiancée behind for the greater good, and Willow was a sweet, sensible police officer trainee who deeply cared for her hero. As for me, I had become a malicious woman who didn’t care about the bigger picture; I couldn’t comprehend a police officer’s duty and was even kicking up a fuss in the hospital to hold a hero back. When Shawn saw the screenshot on the floor, the mask he had been wearing finally cracked, but he still kept up that high-and-mighty rhetoric of his.“Willow just survived a near-death experience and made a post on social media to express her feelings. What is there to make such a big fuss about? Lea, do you really have to

Across the screen, I could almost smell the bitter stench of burning flesh from that day. When a person was abandoned in the face of death, it was impossible not to feel resentment.Yet, I suddenly realized that rather than hating him, I felt sorry for myself, for the version of me who, even while hurting so badly that I almost fainted in that sea of fire, still fought desperately to survive. There was no greater sorrow than the death of one’s heart.“Luke,” I said calmly, “make two copies. Have one as material for a lawsuit to submit to the police and the court, and send the other one to Shawn and his lawyer. Also, draft two documents for me. One will be a property division agreement to dissolve our cohabitation relationship, and the other will be a notice of revocation regarding my design patent licensing agreement.”Luke adjusted his glasses and nodded. “Alright. I’ll get right on it.”The next morning, I finally picked up Shawn’s phone call.“Lea, what on earth do you want?

The waiting time felt exceptionally long.Over the past two days, I had received dozens of messages from Shawn. On the first day, Shawn’s message was condescending. [Lea Summer, are you done throwing a tantrum out there? Willow has moved back to her shared apartment today, so get yourself home right now. Your leg isn’t even healed yet. What are you out there doing on your own? I’ll pick you up after work tomorrow.]On the second day, as the deadline approached for the state inspection of the city police department’s ‘Eagle Eye’ intelligent policing system, his tone transformed into a frantic, furious interrogation. [Lea! What is the meaning of this? Why did you shut down the backend permissions for the system your company provided? Do you know the state inspection team is over at the precinct today to watch the demo? You need to lift the restriction on the system right now. This system dictates whether I can be promoted to deputy chief at the end of the year. Stop being so ignor
